  1. I kind of wish they would just give Woodruff the spot and leave him be at least until Nelson is ready. He's a top 100 prospect with far better stuff than Suter and better stuff than Miley. Yeah he didn't come out fast out of the gates, but no one besides Chase did. Even if not you could make a pretty case for any of Peralta, Burnes, or maybe even Derby being a better bet to cover until Nelson is ready. We finally have some really good depth for the last spot in our rotation and I don't know that we need to be putting this much into a 31 year old reclamation project.
  2. Yeah, good call on this, Lowrie looks like he would have been a great add and likely will still end up being available at some point. 2B is one of the few clear holes on this team and looks like a very possible trade acquisition sometime this season. Villar should/will get til June or so to show some kind of rebound, but the clock is ticking and if 2B is still a weakness by then I would look to address it.
  3. Is it completely possible that when Knebel returns, we'll be sticking with a non-traditional approach of just not having a full-time closer? This seems to be working well. The pen is such a luxury right now even without Corey. Counsell basically has 3 guys that he can use whenever the heck he wants to just to get outs in Hader, Jeffress and Barnes. Knebel could be the 4th guy on that list and even Taylor Williams if he can harness his command could be there too by the end of the year. Just really fun to watch all around. Albers and Jennings are basically afterthoughts and yet both have been fantastic too. There are literally probably 5 guys in the pen who can close and you're not too worried about it. Quite a contrast from last year when it was, "Oh crap, Feliz sucks. Now what?"
  4. The Colin Walsh approach is the best look for Sogard. Just stand there and hope to walk.
  5. Miley is just gravy if they can get anything out of him. He had a nice spring but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he gets into the rotation. He's clearly not replacing Anderson Davies Chacin or Guerra right now so they have to decide if he's even the best option among the rest.
  6. I'm going to guess one from each. But Albers mowed through the 7th pretty quickly so possibly they go back to him in the 8th.
  7. I was just going to post this. Derby is one of those pitching prospects no one ever really talks about but he just keeps getting the job done.
  8. I have seen that many times. Shows how much I pay attention then. Unless it's completely frivolous I don't think I've seen it.
  9. Did anyone notice the homeplate ump just snubbed Nottingham when he wanted to appeal a swing to 1st? I don't think I've ever seen an ump refuse a catcher request on an appeal.
  10. Rock: "Sogard can't CATCH a break." Sorry Bill -- were you completely unconscious during last night's game?
  11. I don’t think it was a catch either. His glove never stopped moving and the ball flung out of it. When they clarified a couple of years ago I thought it was more focused on not costing someone a catch after they had clearly secured it and were trying to transfer the ball to their throwing hand. That's what I was thinking. Ball was moving the entire time. I'm assuming it must not be a reviewable call.
  12. Um. Is that seriously a catch in baseball? Have it in your glove for a split second, juggle it around and drop it = catch? Maybe my mind has just been too conditioned by football, but in no way did that look like a catch to me.
  13. This guy has just been rocked in basically every other appearance in his entire career and he's making us look silly.
  14. What's wrong with that? If you have enough guys with options and you give them enough days off, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to pull it off. Pitchers in general can pitch more total innings if they have fewer outings. The reason relievers can't handle more innings is because they often appear in 60-70 games. You might only get 80 innings that way, but if you keep it at 45-50 games, I think you can get 100 or more. Yeah, and it's not like it's going to be 7-8 guys handling that workload. It'll be 10-12.
  15. Starting Sogard against a LHP is just unfathomable. You take the one guy who should basically never be in the lineup and somehow make him even weaker. Think Craig was thinking a little more with his heart than his head when he penciled him in today. Today isn't a day for Villar to be off. Now obviously, hope he proves me wrong and goes 3 for 4.
  16. They've been trying to unload Santana since the Winter Meetings, nothing new there, but it doesn't have anything to do with Saladino. Santana's slow start isn't helping making him more marketable, and if they couldn't find the right deal in the off-season I doubt they're going to find it now. At this point they just need to ride it out with Domingo. He'll get it going, he's got too good of a bat not to eventually. Maybe he won't have as good of a year as last year, but he won't continue to be this bad.
  17. At the risk of sounding like a tinfoil hat guy, how quickly they moved to sign Sogard in the off-season makes me think he a guy Counsell wanted. That doesn't mean he's completely safe. But I think he'll have a fairly long leash. Since he can't be sent down, any move to get him off the roster is permanent. So they'll try to avoid losing the infield depth and eating the money if they can help it. Now if it gets to be June and Sogard is still OPSing under. 500, maybe they'll think about moving on. But until then, Saladino is just a depth move.
  18. Last season, Corey Knebel shattered a 26 year old Brewers record of 98 strikeouts by a reliever with 126. Josh Hader is on pace to shatter it again -- a current pace of an incredible 194. While he's obviously unlikely to maintain that pace, if he stays healthy there shouldn't be any reason he doesn't break it. By the way, the NL record is held by Brad Lidge with 154 K's in 2004.
  19. Day off on Monday, doubt you'll see anything too crazy. Nottingham will start I think. Lefty on the mound so Aguilar or Braun at 1st. Santana or Braun starting in the OF. Probably Perez at SS so Arcia gets 3 straight days off with the ankle. That's about all I would expect.
  20. I'm thinking maybe Jesus Aguilar isn't quite as expendable and gone as we thought.
