  1. Good work, Blazek. You're totally good enough to be able to afford walking the pitcher to lead off an inning.
  2. Can't we talk about that original article? That was hilarious. Touche, Adrian. Too bad Gerry Davis has no sense of humor.
  3. So because we had a ton of extra salary flexibility in the off-season, dropping 30M on free agent relievers would have been a good use of it in a year we weren't expected to do anything? Gee, the Phillies didn't seem to have trouble with the concept, they traded for Neshek for PTBNL or cash in November. That was a 6.5m option. The A's didn't have trouble opening the wallet for 37 year old Santiago Casilla. Marlins and Brad Ziegler or Tazawa? Etc etc Nobody said to blow the payroll. Oh by the way, Feliz is throwing about a 2.7 era for the royals since we dumped him off for nothing. With the pathetic state of these castoffs we have that was an error. First of all, using the Phillies and A's pens as examples is kind of silly, considering they have the 23rd and 27th ranked bullpens while we are 19th. And we DID make a move along those lines. It was Neftali Feliz, and if didn't work out here.
  4. Taking draft pick compensation away from rental buyers has really kind of screwed rental sellers. It's a big market opportunity for playoff caliber teams.
  5. I can't help but wonder if the worst happens in the Cubs series, if Swarzak could find himself on the move again before the deadline. If you're 4.5 back after the Cubs series, you might as well either find a quick buyer for Swarzak or try to extend him. Anything else would just be chasing unicorns at that point.
  6. So because we had a ton of extra salary flexibility in the off-season, dropping 30M on free agent relievers would have been a good use of it in a year we weren't expected to do anything?
  7. Not sure how you do it at the moment. Personally I think we're likely headed for a near certain 1.5 games back tomorrow and basically going to get to the point where we need to take 2 out of 3 against the Cubs or they're going to start just running away. We've been in a tailspin, 6 games lost in 2 weeks, just no way around it.
  8. Yeah I don't get the Stearns can't build a pen talk. Uh, this was a rebuilding year. Go back to March and pretty much everyone expected the pen to suck. If they expected to contend they would have invested more but it would have been dumb to invest 20M in pen arms with no realistic expectations to contend. Obviously the Swarzak move showed the adjustment to expectations but you can't expect Stearns to rebuild an entire pen mid-season. The pen is rebuilding, it just looks bad because the rest of the team is outperforming the rebuild.
  9. Not that I want the club to be in buy mode and mortgage the future for rental pieces like Darvish, but this is a horribly disheartening way to go from buy mode to stand-pat mode. I get what you're saying and I even agree but the method by which it's occurring is gut-wrenching and heart ripping. Better now than in August before it's too late. It sucks, but we can't just wish for this team to be better than they are. The unfortunate reality is that they're not as good as the Chicago Cubs, and all the rentals in the world probably won't be good enough to get us there. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Blazek pitches lights out tomorrow, we win 1-0, and we somehow sweep the Cubs and the whole perspective changes. But I very, very much doubt it.
  10. He's made this mistakes more than once this year, so I tend to doubt it. I still have no idea why in the world Swarzak was not with the team yet. When you rent a guy for 2 months you sort of need every game out of him that you can get.
  11. If we lose to Scherzer tomorrow (very likely), and the Cubs beat the rebuilding White Sox (very likely), and we happened to get swept by the Cubs (not all that likely, but certainly possible), we would have dropped a whopping 10 games to the Cubs in just 3 weeks and trail them by 4.5 in the division at the trade deadline. That would certainly squash any further fantasies about making the playoffs this year and hopefully put the kabosh on any further 'win now' moves.
  12. Of course since we have a total 8th inning meltdown to trail by 6, we go ahead and score a few in the 9th.
  13. Any more trades for 'rentals' this year is just a flat out waste of resources.
  14. Jacob Barnes has a 4.50 ERA this year, and he's still somehow our '8th inning guy.'
  15. Cubs are up 4-0 on the hapless White Sox, so that will do it for the 'technically we are still in 1st' for now.
  16. Do you know how many wins the Brewers have when trailing after 8 innings this year? I'll give you a hint, it's less than one.
  17. And there's the game. Nice work once again, offense. This was one we really had to have too with Blazek vs. Scherzer tomorrow.
  18. Are they sending him over on a horse and buggy? He was traded over 24 hours ago. He's still not here?
  19. The 1-0 pitch to Harper was plenty good according to Gameday. Great pitch.
  20. If Travis Shaw does that, he probably gets tossed.
  21. I know those weren't hard hit balls, but Barnes is our 4th or 5th best reliever. Why Counsell continues to be so in love with him as his '8th inning guy' reminds me of the Kameron Loe/Ron Roenicke era.
  22. Still holdouts on giving it to the machines? These guys are determining games and races all on their own.
