  1. I have no issue with trading prospects for controllable talent. I don't even have an issue witb trading for Gray, if the price is right. What I have an issue with is the attitude by some (not you) that Stearns is just a big idiot who doesn't care about winning because he hasn't made a big splash a week before the trade deadline in response to a losing streak. I'm actually kind of relieved to this point in a way because I like seeing that he isn't going to make decisions based on emotions, which is no way to run a team. If we trade for Gray, hey, that's fine, I'll look at it based on what we got and what we gave up and evaluate from there, not evaluate based on whether I thought we should buy or sell. But the Stearns' criticism at this point is just ridiculous IMO. He's trying to balance the present and the future, as he should, and it's not an easy job. We have no idea what the depth or content of the discussions that have gone on and in many cases he's competing with many other teams for one player. Some seem to think it's just as simple as 'Hey here's some prospects that may never pan out, now give us Sonny Gray, and this is just so easy and why hasn't Stearns done this yet?!?!'
  2. He's been linked in talks to pretty much every available pitcher out there. You're just flat out trolling now. DS being linked in talks with every available Pitcher...yes..but who has he acquired?? You can be linked in as many talks as you want, it's meaningless unless you acquire someone. Then why exactly are you giving the Braves big props for looking into Sonny Gray, while Stearns, who has also looked into Sonny Gray, is just a big dum-dum? As far as I know the Braves have also not yet acquired Sonny Gray.

  4. Yes, I'm sure that's what Stearns is thinking. He's probably sitting around his office right now, thinking, 'help the Brewers? I don't even like the Brewers.' #1, that is an absolutely terrible reason to be 'not cheap' in trading, and presumably by not being cheap, be generous in what you give away. That is, however, a great way to end up restarting the rebuild again in 2 years. #2, do you actually think Billy Beane is going to think in a couple years, 'Gosh darn that David Stearns. He told me he didn't want to give up Brinson in a Sonny Gray deal. I'm not even going to take his calls anymore'. That's not how it works. These guys are businessmen all trying to get the best deal for their team. They know how it works, and they're going to try to get the best deal the next time and the time after that. Remember how the Mets kind of screwed us on the Gomez near-trade 2 years ago? Remember how we still were deep in talks with them last year about trading Lucroy? #3, Stearns has made many deals with many teams since coming here, pretty clear he's not afraid to deal and teams aren't afraid to deal with him. Think I'll trust his judgment over fans that tend to run on pure emotion.
  5. Not entirely true. If the Brewers can trade for someone who can help for the next 3+ years they should trade for them. Someone like Dee Gordon would be a good trade target kind of a win now and is signed through 2022 I believe at a fairly friendly contract. I would eliminate Gray and Verlander from the list along with a few others. Definitely no to relief pitchers. Gordon would be okay I guess. He's controllable but not all that cheap and not young. His best weapon is his speed which I would be a little worried about how valuable that will be in 3 years plus. Total slap hitter which I guess would at least be a different dimension for our offense . Good singles hitter, but much like Perez can't take a walk to save his life. If we were taking on all Gordon's money I wouldn't be willing to give up much more than Villar.
  6. Cubs were percentage points ahead and listed first in any standing you could find. I understand we still had a dash next to our team name, but when you have a lower winning percentage than the first place team, you're behind them.
  7. We'll be in first again soon. Right you are, thanks to the White Sox of all teams. I guess the best way to have a good day lately is to just not play.
  8. Garcia just went to the Twins with catcher Anthony Recker for pitching prospect Huascar Ynoa. Ynoa is a 19 year old in A Ball signed as an international free agent a few years ago. Kind of a light return for what I expected. Ynoa is a nice young arm, but a total lottery ticket.
  9. Thank gosh for Fangraphs playoffs odds. What were they at the start of the year? A week ago? Silly silly silly. We don't and won't make decisions on something so random. Stearns is an analytical guy, and he hires personnel strictly for that kind of analytics. You don't think he pays attention to this kind of information? Maybe it's not from Fangraphs, and either way of course it's not the end all be all, but it's one more piece of information that he uses as part of his decision making process.
  10. And you're still unlikely to see that any time soon with or without Broxton. Phillips will strike out a ton. Brinson will strike out a lot. For your future CF options, that's about it. Between guys like Ray, Clark, and Diaz, I don't see this trend changing anytime soon. We're a team that hits a lot of HRs and strikes out a lot. That's what we do, and we're 7th in the league in scoring so it does work for us to some degree. Dubon is probably the guy you're looking for; otherwise I don't see this trend changing anytime soon.
  11. And Junior Guerra's arm has been helping us so much? And people realize we are allowed to make more than one trade right? Just because we trade for Gray doesn't mean we can't get a bat too. The point was, that Guerra has 2 starts since the break and we've scored 3 and 1 runs in those games. Unlikely that Gray makes a difference. Which bat are you suggesting?
  12. I still want them to make several moves, Gray being one of them..I have just given up that they will..keep hearing rumors about them being in on so many different guys, but obviously Stearns is too passive/scared to pull the trigger on anything. Oh well, WHEN this rebuild plan fails in the next 3-4 years and he's looking for a new job, he'll have to own it, and always regret not trying to improve the ballclub when he had a chance. This is hilarious. If we fired Stearns he would be unemployed for like 20 minutes. Also kind of odd that you obviously think this team is good enough to contend now but yet apparently not good enough to contend for the next 3-4 years if they don't do something now. That just screams impatient.
  13. Goodbye, 1st place. It was fun. Not sure we'll be seeing you again or not.
  14. If we really want to give up on Villar, which I feel iffy about, Villar for Kinsler straight up actually makes a ton of sense for both sides. It makes sense for us because if we trade for Kinsler we are basically giving up on Villar anyway. He's not a good super utility candidate and he'll just rot on the bench if we had Kinsler. Kinsler would be controlled through next season which would be exactly what we need to bridge the gap to Dubon/Hiura/Diaz. It makes sense for Detroit because they are in a good position to buy low on a young controlled 2B who had 19 HRs and 60+ steals last year. They need to get younger. I don't know if I'm really crazy about trading for Kinsler but if we did Villar for Kinsler actually makes a lot of sense to me.
  15. They vested back in May. The suspension time counts.
  16. I'd also love to revisit shopping Braun, but the injuries have been just too much this year for any team to take that kind of a risk in the next week . However, if he could somehow, some way stay healthy and productive for a month, it's possible that a contender that he's willing to go to, looking for a big last minute upgrade, could be willing to take a chance and pull the trigger on an August deal.
  17. Honestly we should be aggressively shopping Garza. He's a great alternative to teams that are hesitant to invest big money and multiple years in Samardzija or Verlander, and his $5M option is an extra bonus for a contender as he's not a rental. We don't have many no-brainer sell chips this year but Garza is one of them. I wouldn't expect a hefty return but his numbers and track record justify a decent young controllable asset or prospect in return . The Dodgers would be a great fit especially if Kershaw's injury is anything that will cost him some time.
  18. Nothing real positive happening on the farm today again either. What an absolutely dreadful last week it's been for the organization.
  19. Note to Lane Grindle. When you're down 6-2 and score 1 run, you have not 'cut the deficit in half.'
  20. I don't base it on just this. They're better than they've played the last week, obviously . But they're not as good as they played the two weeks before the break, either . We didn't come into this season expecting big things . Things have changed a bit, but not to the extent that I think we should realistically be expecting playoff baseball this year .
  21. Buy mode was semi-interesting when we had a 5.5 game buffer, which still isn't a lot but leaves some wiggle room. We would be insane to buy at this point possibly being caught by the end of the night by a team that is much more talented than we are. Honestly this team is pretty much exactly who we thought they were. The offense has been decent as expected. Like every other team they've gotten some surprisingly good performances from guys like Shaw and surprisingly bad ones from guys like Villar and Broxton. The rotation has been probably better than expected, overall. The pen has stunk as expected. Talent wise this is about a .500 team which is within reasonable variation of their actual record and better than I would have expected. They are not a legitimate contender regardless of the current standings and IMO Stearns is far too smart to fall into a trap based on the fact that they are technically and mathematically in a pennant race when they have little realistic hope of getting to the playoffs, much less winning once they got there. They have a bright future and need to stick with the plan that has gotten them this far. They're not there yet, and that's ok. Patience is needed.
  22. By the time we lose another series in Washington and a 'home' series against the Cubs we should be firmly out of 1st and out of 'buy' mode.
  23. Gotta keep it at 4-2 or you can pretty much chalk up another L for us.
