  1. we may have dodged a HUGE bullet when Villar turned down our offer this past off season... Isan Diaz can't get here soon enough. Quite possible that Keston Hiura gets here first.
  2. I can see why Counsell is so reluctant to use the words 'bench player' for any position player on this team. There isn't a guy on this 'bench' (Aguilar, Perez, Sogard, Vogt) that isn't starter quality.
  3. I can't imagine that Burnes wouldn't be a top 50 prospect if he were in the Yankees or Red Sox systems and part of that hype train.
  4. The thing is, you were wrong 17 days ago too. That Rockies rotation is terrible, there was no reason to think it wouldn't fall off. They had also beat up on the Padres and Giants a lot early. The Rockies tend to fade most seasons because it is just a tough place to play and their players wear down. At no point this season did I think the wild card was out of play. Ok Ender. Yes I know you have been mentioning frequently for awhile you think the Rockies will fade. So even though we were like 10 out of the WC or whatever it was on June 20th and all I said is it didn't appear to be in play, yes, there you go, you were right, I was wrong.
  5. Calm down. That post I wrote saying the wild card didn't appear to be in play was written on June 20th. Obviously the standings looked a lot different 17 days ago.
  6. You must not have read the last couple Junior Guerra game threads.
  7. I can't even recall seeing MLB players basically ever get out of a run down, and I've seen it twice this series.
  8. I mean it's pretty justified by this point, isn't it? It's not like last year when he was actually really good and people just hated on him because of his style of play.
  9. I don't see the 40 man being an issue at all. Still some dead weight there and likely some movement on it in the upcoming months. The innings limit is a fair point however. He's already at 95. I don't know when they plan to cut him off this year but I can't imagine too many more starts in him this year.
  10. Internally, is there any chance of Corbin Burnes making the jump all the way to Milwaukee this season? I know he's already very accelerated and its still a short sample but his dominance of A+ and AA this year is just remarkable. It wouldn't be unprecedented for him to skip AAA, especially being Colorado Springs, nor would it be unprecedented for a 22 year old that was drafted as an advanced college arm to make his debut . They've been somewhat aggressive promoting Hader and Woodruff, although those 2 have quite a bit more seasoning in the minors.
  11. He's going to be a cautionary tale for all young guys who have an outlier of a really good season and then think they're better than they are. He'll still get tendered for a million or 2 next year and get one more shot but 2018 is going to be a make or break season for him, because if he repeats this year he won't he back in 2019.
  12. Isn't Schwarber the guy that the Yankees really wanted for Chapman, rather than Torres?
  13. He was an effective starter in Colorado but that was 4 years ago, he's well removed from being that player. That's fine that PETCO hasn't been as pitcher friendly as usual this year but that doesn't change the fact that Chacin has been terribly bad anywhere but PETCO. The WAR is surprisingly good but I'd take that with a big grain of salt especially from a pitcher. Woodruff should be back in a week or two and I'd rather give him that extra spot in the meantime. I'm not sure Chacin is worth even a win over Suter/Blazek/Woodruff until Anderson returns.
  14. Every time the Cubs keep pulling within a game or half a game or whatever I think, "Ok finally reality again, but it was fun while it lasted." Then things keep going back the other way again. I guess I'm not waiting so much for us to collapse as I am for the Cubs to wake up and go on a tear. I don't know enough about them to know why they've been so mediocre for 90 games, whether it's just terrible luck or something more. I just can't bring myself to believe they are suddenly a .500 quality team after being a 100 win quality team a year ago . And it's not like they were just an aging team due for a collapse. They still have young talent. I am good with whatever happens. I just don't want to see them sacrifice a foundation for a 1-2 year window. Truth be told it will probably take about the lead we have right now (3.5G) on September 1st for me to think, 'Wow, this could actually be happening ' But that's what makes this season so fun. No expectations. Just an 'enjoy the moment' environment for 162 games.
  15. ROY can't be a reliever, not in this bullpen. Hey, our one All-Stsr came from this bullpen .
  16. That would be a horrible, nightmarish trade.
  17. He gives up too many HRs, he's not young or controlled, and his home/away splits from pitcher friendly PETCO are an absolute nightmare. I think he'd be a disaster at Miller Park . Don't see how he's an upgrade from our internal options.
  18. Shaw should be fine, Counsell said X Rays negative, day to day.
  19. It isn't just salary that would make Quintana cost more in prospects. It's also because he's a better pitcher with way more upside. You're right, starting pitching is expensive. In Samardzija's case, it's about $20M a year expensive, he isn't a substantial upgrade from anyone in our full healthy 5 man rotation, and in 1-2 years we will be bemoaning why we have to save a rotation spot for a mediocre aging starter because we're paying him $20M a year when we have guys like Burnes and Ortiz waiting in the wings . We also have the 8th ranked rotation in the bigs . Why pay an expensive price for something you don't even need? If it's a substantial ace upgrade, that's a different conversation, but this doesn't even make us much better. You wouldn't give Garza a $20M a year extension right now, would you? Is there really a major difference between Samardzija and Garza?
  20. What? How in the world can anyone describe Lucroy as 'greedy'?? He was offered an extension to stay here for fair compensation. He didn't sign because he didn't see a contending team. He decided to bet on himself and lost... big league. I think you guys are getting the story mixed up. It was Lucroy who approached US about an extension in 2015. The Brewers turned HIM down.
  21. What? How in the world can anyone describe Lucroy as 'greedy'??
  22. My biggest issue with the article is the insinuation that the White Sox would love no prospect more than Corey Ray. Why? Just because he's a Chicago native and has roots there? Sure, it makes sense to us but we have zero idea of what the White Sox scouting department thinks of Ray as a potential MLB player. Maybe they love him, maybe they wouldn't have even taken him at #10 last year, we have no idea. Not to say he doesn't make sense as part of a potential deal for Quintana, but if the writer has any notions that the White Sox aren't going to pursue better deals just because we're dangling Corey Ray out there, that's silly.
  23. Moore has been pretty terrible. Don't see how our internal options aren't at least as good. Samardzija seems like looking to spend money just because we have money to spend. He's the classic expensive middle of the rotation inning eater market that we've been dabbling in now for 10+ years, we should be looking to get out of that market, not invest more in it. We are pretty set with Nelson and Anderson right now, when Anderson gets healthy. Davies should be fine at the back end. Woodruff is basically ready, and Hader, Ortiz, and Burnes are all rotation candidates in the next 1-2 years. Sorry, I agree with a lot of your ideas but I don't get this one at all. It doesn't really make us better now and doesn't in the next few years either, especially when he struggles and we still feel obligated to find a rotation spot for him because he's burning a $20M a year hole in our pocket. I know the temptation is there right now to lose patience and make moves outside the process since we're still in 1st in July, but I don't see how this would be a good investment. It has pricier version of Matt Garza situation in 1-2 years written all over it.
