  1. 140+ pitches is pretty much unheard of these days. I'm not saying don't do it, but I'm not sure what the answer is here. Counsell will definitely get booed royally if he pulls Chase with a no-no, that's for sure. Probably will be a moot point. There are a lot of near no-nos for every one that is actually completed. But it's exciting regardless.
  2. Actually looking at Maldonado's Fangraphs and BRef pages he's having a very solid year, higher WAR than Bandy even. Obviously I'd rather have Bandy, the upside and controllable asset part makes that easy. But it seems like both sides are pretty happy for the most part with it.
  3. And to think we traded Maldonado for him... What was LAAOA thinking? The crazy thing is if you go to their boards they are just thrilled with Maldonado and think he was their best move of the off-season and essential to their pitching staff.
  4. This is it, if we are going to win this we won't get a better shot than now.
  5. 1/3rd of our payroll isn't a mole hill, $80M isn't a mole hill, and I think I've adequately explained why it isn't. That would be true with any player whether i liked him or not. But by all means go with the 'I'm going to attack that opinion since I don't share it' approach. I'm just sharing my opinion and I believe it's a valid one. My opinion is that your negativity is mainly led by a dislike of Braun. People can tell you that the contract won't really effect much going forward with the rebuild. You'll continue to toss around the figures like you have insight into MA and Stearns minds. You don't, I don't. We can each share an opinion. You don't have to always snap back. I didn't. I explained why, as logically as I could, that unproductive payroll is never good, and you replied that I was hating on Braun because I dislike him and making a mountain out of a mole hill. If Braun had never been suspended for PED use, if he was the greatest guy alive, if he was still my favorite player and helped old ladies cross the street and kissed babies and all that, I would still not want to waste 1/3rd of our payroll on a broken, unproductive player, no matter how much money we have to spend. Trust me, I'm still hoping for the best for Braun, because I love this team. Maybe he'll come back and surprise us and stay healthy and at least be a 120 game a year, .900 OPS player. I'm not optimistic about it, but I'm certainly hoping for it. If that happens, it will not be a waste.
  6. Hopefully Anderson can keep it up, we likely have no margin for error today to have a chance.
  7. I don't know if he's just trying too hard lately or what, because it looks like he is at times, but he's 3 for his last 29 with no extra base hits. Really struggling.

  9. Its also entirely possible that DS and MA might be more inclined to take a risk on Robert (or other expenditure, just using Robert for an example), if they had a $40M payroll, but feel less comfortable doing so with payroll being where it is in the interest of preserving flexibility. If I want to take the family on a $3,000 vacation and have $9,000 in savings, maybe I'm not comfortable doing so but would be if I had $13,000 in savings. I can still afford it either way, but it's still different situations. I think it just helps people feel better about throwing away a third of our payroll if they think it doesn't really matter, which I can understand, but there's absolutely no way we can know for sure that Mark A is spending exactly what he would be spending on regardless of whether Braun is on the payroll or not. It doesn't mean we can't be successful in our rebuild, but more flexibility is of course always better than less.
  10. This. I wouldn't bother speculating on the Yankees or Astros since Braun won't go there. I actually think our best shot, if they can stay somewhat in contention, might be the Angels. If they go on a little run and want to buy, they really don't have any top prospects to pull off a blockbuster, but they could afford to take on Braun, so that could be their best way to add a major piece without giving up much, and Braun would probably go there. Best part for both sides is the DH opportunity. Angels are an old team and probably won't keep Trout forever so its possible they may want to try something now. Albert Pujols kind of has the DH spot locked down for the next 4.5 years. I suppose they could share it but both are RHB and neither should play in the field. Yeah, that make it less likely then. Thought he was still getting some time at 1st. I don't know how badly his skills at 1st have eroded, but if Braun could DH half the time and spend the other half in LF that would still be a lot better.
  11. Yeah, I don't get that. Over the course of his remaining contract including this season, we have a minimum of an $80M obligation to Braun, most of which could have been avoided with an August trade. $80M is not some amount to idly dismiss like it's no big deal, especially for a small market team. Yes, Mark still has money to spend, but maybe there's money he would be willing to spend on something with a payroll of $40M that he's not willing to push for with a $60M payroll, we don't know. Look at what the White Sox just gave Luis Robert, an incredible international prospect, 2nd best in the world, $26M, or about $50M with the penalty. That's still $30M less than our obligation to Braun. Now I'm not even saying we could have or would have signed Robert, I'm just using that to show the magnitude of that kind of waste and the alternatives. Like you said, wasting money is always a bad thing. If Ryan Braun is a 90 game a year 1 WAR player each year for the rest of his contract on average, that is bad for us. Let's not try to pretend like it's not just because Mark A. is rich and still has other money to spend.

  13. Sorry, this makes no sense. You won't jump on Wily because he's been good out of the pen until tonight, which has been 2 outings? But put it all on Knebel because he didn't get it done when we needed even though he's been much better out of the pen for much longer? Knebel was bound to give one up at some point. He's been outstanding. Knebel has been great. I have no complaints with him. He just didn't get the job done. Should've never got to Wily tonight. Too many guys on these boards pick out the same guys to destroy anytime something doesn't go right. It's okay to say Knebel didn't get the job done when this team badly needed a win and be pissed about it. Don't know who you are referring to, but I've been a big Wily supporter and a supporter of his move to the pen. He also didn't get the job done tonight. Knebel threw a fastball and the guy hit it out. Happens. I have a lot less problem with that then Wily spiking an 0-2 pitch 2 feet in front of the plate to lose it. Generally the guys you are talking about getting picked on are getting picked on because they're having poor seasons, which Wily is. Knebel is having an outstanding one, and still is. If Thames is called safe earlier at home then he gets the save despite the HR anyway. Can't expect him to be perfect every inning. I have no problem with saying he didn't get it done tonight, but even when he didn't, he limited the damage and we still had a walkoff situation in the bottom of the 9th to win it. Then Arcia hits into a double play, Wily spikes an 0-2 pitch, and here we are. There's no one guy to put this on.

  15. Top of the order coming up, so I'm thinking, down with a whimper, 1-2-3 in an 8 pitch inning.
  16. 5 in a row it Is! Nice sequence there, Wily and Bandy. Had the guy 0-2 and not only did you blow it but ended up giving up a couple.
  17. Thought they were going to screw that up, Murphy sure looked like he wanted to pitch to him.
