The whole 'don't trade within your division ' is one of those dumb unwritten baseball traditions that needs to go IMO. Why would you limit yourself to outside your division just out of fear of what the trade will do to help your rivals? Furthermore, why would you be afraid of that at all? Isn't the whole point of trading the belief that you are helping yourself ? Help yourself the most, worry about making your team the best you can make it regardless of what that means doing and let the other GMs worry about their own.

Nelson is such a dud. Every time I start to actually believe in him again he digs deep and manages to put together another albatross of a start where he either can't throw a strike or leaves everything right over the middle.

Yeah, not even close. Bickford's value is minimal right now until he can come back from his suspension and injury and re-establish himself as a prospect. Davies is a back end of the rotation starter. Broxton has the most value among the bunch and I love Broxton, but he's not bringing back a cost controlled ace as the centerpiece. And yes, Quintana is an ace, and yes, he finished top 10 in Cy Young voting last year. No, he's not as good as Sale or Kershaw, but he's far better than any starter we have. They are asking for the sun and the moon for Quintana and while they may not get what they hope, there are about 10 other teams that would love a starter like Quintana who could blow that offer away. If Broxton/Bickford/Davies was enough for Quintana, it would be done.

What are you using to define the 'top' starting pitchers? Randy Johnson had an ERA of 5.00 in 2006. Take him out and your number drops from 29.2 to 28.1.

We've got one of the best minor League systems in Baseball at the moment, if not the best. You dont have to put 3 top 100 in every offer to get a good ML player. It took Lucroy+Jeffress to get only 2 from the Rangers. Our top 100s are in the top 80 and climbing. This isnt a Peralta/Nelson/Thornburg #1 Brewers prospect around 85 with this group. Im just going to end rant. Man this was a little over the top in the context of the conversation. All he said was the kind of deal he thought it would take to land Quintana. If a bidding war ensues at the deadline than they might be the kind of deal it takes. It doesn't mean we should do it.

Nelson has been solid this year. Not spectacular but solid. Jimmy has the stuff to at least hold out hope that he can be a wild card and boost our rotation, but he has to avoid the big second half letdown after getting our hopes up last year. Control Is key for him. Last year he led the league in both walks and HBP at 86 and 17 respectively for an astounding 103 free baserunners. That can't continue if he'll ever have any success. Cut down on those numbers and he could still be a middle of the rotation starter.

There was a pretty common sentiment when we called up Arcia last year among some, not everyone, that they called him up too soon. I can see this one from both sides. I can appreciate the value of getting the MLB experience, and I do expect him to improve. With that said, while his glove is definitely MLB ready, even his Colorado Springs numbers were a pretty good indicator that his bat wasn't and probably still isn't. It wouldn't have been difficult to justify keeping him down. They could have waited until this summer and had SS covered with Villar last year and still had it covered this spring with Perez and Sogard. Then called Arcia up this summer and had an extra year of control in Arcia's prime rather than right now when he's really no better than other internal options. So for me, it's not about being patient or impatient, it's about whether it's a wise use of our assets to sacrifice that service year down the road for the MLB experience now. I don't know the answer to that but obviously the club felt it was.

Diplan and Freddy Peralta could be two more of those guys. Pennington too. I see Woodruff, Ortiz, and Burnes being the best gets for "good enough" starters. I agree good enough starters and elite bullpen is an easier and more realistic path for the Brewers. Those are guys I expect to stick as starters too. Woodruff, Ortiz, and Burnes. Everyone else among the pitching prospects I think will either wind up in the pen, or it's simply too early to tell, like Supak. Power relievers are in such high trade demand that I wonder if it could actually become an organizational perennial farm reload plan to continue to flip relievers for prospects, even when we're contending, as long as we continue to crank them out. Knebel could be next, as hard as it would be to part with him. I know that seems a little extreme of a theory but this has served us well in recent years, giving us guys who are helping now like Shaw and Pina, as well as prospects like Brinson, Ortiz, and Cordell (+ Lucroy), and Bickford, Susac, Dubon, Pennington, and yet another prospect that is still to be named. That's quite a haul for pen arms. Would be a great way to keep improving while still keeping the farm stocked, seems counterproductive to be buying and selling at the same time but if any GM would be creative enough to pull it off I think it'd be Stearns.

I agree on Uecker. He's basically been doing the same schtick and telling the same "I was bad at baseball" stories for 20+ years. Sometimes he finds time to talk about the action going on actually give a score. To me that's kind of the elephant in the room when people talk about Ueck, no one really wants to say it, because hey, he's Bob Uecker, but if it were anyone else I wouldn't think of him as a very good announcer. Obviously the guy can get away with it because he's a legend, but he frequently seems to lose track of the game these days or give a misleading call early on during the course of a play. With that said I still very much enjoy listening to him and respect him, and hope he can see the Brewers win a World Series while he's still around.
