  1. Agree with most of what you said, although to me Coulter isn't even really a prospect anymore and (Jacob) Nottinghamm is not someone who I would say we gave up a 'ton' for but I guess that's subjective. The other guy in that trade, Bubba Derby, seems to get frequently overlooked. I know he was a disaster as a starter in Brevard but his jump to AA after being moved to the pen has been a success so far. The ERA is outstanding and the K/9 rate is good. Like seemingly most of our farm arms, he was never going to stick in the rotation but may still have a shot to carve out a career as an MLB reliever.
  2. Hader and Woodruff are going to be up here this year at some point.... regardless. "Still in it" will be up to our starting pitching more than anything. Agree that a major trade for a SP is not coming. Woodruff and Hader are the hope and prayer if we are in it late. A trade of a good not great OF prospect from our heap for a lefty bullpen arm with years of control would not shock me. Actually, I expect that sooner rather than later. That sounds like a Will Smith type, and after seeing what the Giants gave up for a Will Smith type last year I hope we don't do that. I don't know who would be available but I still think Hader will be in the pen at some point this year and Wang is also a lefty option in AAA pitching very well. Any cheaply available lefties will be the Tommy Milones of the world. Anyone worth acquiring will likely be expensive.
  3. Ok, hypothetically if we bought, would it be possible to center a package around Orlando Arcia? I know his bat hasn't been all that great, but his D is as advertised, and frankly he's about where anyone would expect for his age. He's less than a year removed from being a top 10 prospect. Dubon honestly looks pretty MLB ready now and could probably step right in at SS, and you've still got your supersubs in Perez and maybe Sogard. I'm not necessarily even for or against it, more just throwing out ideas.
  4. Interesting tidbit from MLBtraderumors: "The Brewers entered Saturday having posted the same record as Arizona (25-18, with a plus-34 run differential), and their success is a “potential nightmare” for general manager David Stearns, one executive told Rosenthal. It’s doubtful Stearns believes the franchise’s rebuild is complete, yet owner Mark Attanasio might push to add, not subtract, if Milwaukee hangs around the playoff race in the coming months, per Rosenthal. " I don't know what the answer is this year, but I only ask that Mark leave it up to Stearns. Don't meddle. Let him make the call here on what is done, whether we're in 1st or last. He got you this far.
  5. I was going to say the same thing . Their bullpen is decimated, convenient that they found a way to turn somewhat mild weather into a day off for their pen. One of those things that makes you scratch your head, right Bosio?
  6. Hader needs to build up his innings, not limit them. Huge difference between him and Price. Price was dominating the minors, Hader has struggled at AAA. Hader is already only 80 innings from hitting his total last year, we can only build them up so much in a year. If he continues to start regularly in AAA til August and then joins our pen the rest of the year there's no reason he can't finish around 150 innings which would be about right where we want him. Not sure what Price dominating the minors has to do with Hader. Just because Hader hasn't excelled in the Colorado Springs rotation doesn't mean he can't pitch effectively out of the Brewer bullpen with his stuff, where many scouts think he will have far greater success anyway.
  7. Braun is eligible to return tomorrow, so there will be another move coming soon. My guess would be with the day off Monday they keep him on the DL yet tomorrow and make a move Monday or early Tuesday.
  8. Quintana had like 3 rough starts to the season and his ERA since then is something like 2.70. There's no discount coming for him.
  9. We have a top 10 MLB player on offense (by OPS) at every single position besides SS and 2B.
  10. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017?list=mil Thoughts on early movement within our top 30: 1-10; Brinson holds steady. I don't see much movement in 1-7, even with somewhat slow starts from Ray and Hader. Woodruff is probably a top 5 prospect at this point IMO. Dubon and Phillips should be higher, Clark probably should drop a couple spots, as well as Erceg, whose hype train has slowed. 11-20: Hard to know where to rank Bickford at this point, and Nottingham seems way overrated at 14. Though Lara is obviously very young, I have a hard time taking him very seriously anymore, the production is just non-existent. I don't think he's even a top 25 guy at this point. Cordell is probably a borderline top 10-12 prospect in our system IMO. Kodi has shown enough promise lately to justify where he's at. Burnes should jump a few spots. 21-30: Gatewood would have to be the biggest riser in the system, and Feliciano and Supak should also be big jumpers. Harrison had a great start and has really cooled off and probably holds steady where he's at.
  11. I totally forgot he was even on the team, he's quickly become the forgotten man in the pen. If Wily pitches how we hope, Feliz only gets buried further in the pen. On the other hand, if he puts it together and becomes who we hoped, all of the sudden our pen looks like a strength. I wanted Greg Holland, we had interest in him and he'd look good right now. With that said I can't believe he got the potential $15M player option for a second year and I can't blame Stearns for not wanting to touch that offer.
  12. Andriese doesn't really interest me, Snell is young and cheap and controllable and would probably cost a ton. I would love Odorizzi back, and he's got a few more years of control, but that will make him rather expensive too. I don't expect a Quintana price tag on him, but something like Ray + Diplan + Reed wouldn't surprise me at all. Cobb is a true rental and probably the most realistic, but he's already got an interested market in him. All of these guys probably COULD be had if we want to meet the price tag, but none of them are going to slip under the radar and be available for cheap.
  13. I would do that with no hesitation but don't think that will be nearly enough. Estrada has been a pretty solid starter for the Jays the last few years. If they make him available at the deadline he'd be a pretty attractive rental for most contenders and it wouldn't take much to outbid an offer of Reed. Of course if there were a bidding war, somebody would offer more than just Reed--but the point is there are guys other than just Estrada too. Who might they be, and how much would we be willing to give up? Matt Cain? Who else? That's the problem though, I think we'd run into this with anyone worth acquiring. I don't think there is going to be a rental starter available for cheap that represents an upgrade over the 5 best starters we already have. You could maybe take on a bad contract like Cain to help mitigate any bidding war, but I don't even see him being an upgrade over what we have.
  14. Well we said after a .500 April that we would know more about what this team really is after May so I would say so far so good at this point. Especially having not had Braun, Thames, and Shaw for significant portions of the month.
  15. I would do that with no hesitation but don't think that will be nearly enough. Estrada has been a pretty solid starter for the Jays the last few years. If they make him available at the deadline he'd be a pretty attractive rental for most contenders and it wouldn't take much to outbid an offer of Reed.
  16. Hader I totally agree. Woodruff I think needs to stay in the rotation and should be in the MLB rotation sometime this season.
  17. Curious to see if Espino gets one more start or not.
  18. I would give him a shot in the MLB bullpen later this year as at some point they're going to need to limit his innings anyway. Chances are good that he'll wind up there anyway. Obviously kind of disappointing if he does, but it's not like it would be the worst thing in the world if he winds up being the next Andrew Miller. I don't see anything really accomplished by sticking him back down in AA.
  19. Yeah I'm not worried about Quintana's start. CC had an ERA near 4 when we acquired him. I'm more open to Quintana because of the controllable nature of his contract. If he were a FA rental I wouldn't want us to waste our time.
  20. I don't know why they haven't done this already. Take some of the pressure off him and push him down to the bottom of the lineup. I still believe in Villar as well, but he doesn't need to be batting at the top of the order every day right now. When Braun returns I'd go 1) Broxton 2) Thames 3) Braun 4) Shaw 5) Santana 6) Bandy/Pina 7) Arcia 8) Villar 9) Pitcher Perez can fit in there just about anywhere when he plays. Or like you said pitcher 8th and Villar 9th would actually be my preference but I don't think Counsell will do that.
  21. 5 for 18 as a pinch hitter gives him an opportunity to be on this ball team. Well, they have Guerra and Braun returning next week, so moves will have to be made, gotta think that one of them will come from the bench. Sogard and Franklin seem pretty interchangeable to me, don't think they really need both. With as hot as Sogard has been it's hard for me to see them sending him back down now, but if they want to keep both they might have to. Otherwise I would have to think one of the two moves is DFA Franklin.
  22. I'm torn on Quintana, because this team could use an ace so badly, but I'm not sure he's it, and the return it would cost us would be an ace price. I agree on the pen. Don't pay trade market prices for bullpen help, it's just too expensive. Between Knebel, Barnes, Peralta, and Hader, we have at least 4 guys who could profile as shutdown late inning arms, and other options available in the minors. I still think Wang will be up at some point if they want a lefty arm in the pen.
  23. I'm actually glad they didnt being Wily back out for the 9th. I think it affirms their commitment to him as an important reliever. He's going to be pitching high stress, high leverage innings. He isn't a long man that you leave out there for 3 innings and then shut down for a couple days.
  24. Brewer fans will say this because it is Villar. I would agree with that no matter who it was. I have no idea how you can get to a pop up, have it bounce right off your glove, and have that recorded as a 'hit. Seems ridiculous. Super easy play in the weather, no, but yeah, it's a 90% play. If that's a 'hit' you better go back and give Villar a hit in the 6th instead of the first error on Schwarber.
  25. Watching that play unfold I said 'Villar is going to drop it.' Hopefully no factor . ..
