  1. Still, he's got some attractive attributes. A lefty bench bat, but one that hits lefties almost as equally as well as righties. Power, and a good on-base percentage. If you're just looking for a September bench bat, you could do a lot worse.
  2. I know he's not on the 40 right now, but what about Matt Clark? He's been raking all year. Has huge power. I'd rather have him than Morris. I think he'd be a fantastic bat to have off the bench in September.
  3. Has it gotten to the point where we may be looking for a new SS next year? I don't think we're quite there yet....I think Segura gets a pretty long leash in that I think they will give him all of 2015 yet to see what they have yet. But I could see Segura possibly be a non-tender candidate when he hits arbitration in 2016 if he puts up another sub .600 OPS season next year. That's an awfully hard fall for a guy who was a candidate for a very long-term extension a year ago.
  4. IMO it is way too early to be concerned about how our offense will look in 2018. So much can happen between now and then, guys develop, maybe Coulter turns out to be a star, maybe we make a big trade somewhere, maybe guys we haven't even drafted yet make it to the bigs by then. For perspective on that, consider opening day in 2010: Greg Zaun was our starting catcher, Casey McGehee our 3rd baseman, and Jim Edmonds in right. Lucroy was still an unknown as far as how good he would be and Gomez was starting to get the bust label. Peralta was in High A and Davis and Gennett were in Appleton, and Jimmy Nelson hadn't been drafted yet. K-Rod was in New York making over $12M a year. Greinke, Marcum, Garza, and Lohse had never pitched for us and we had no real reason to think they ever woud.
  5. I think we should look at Braun's contract extension right now and how we feel about that and ask ourselves the same question on Lucroy on whether it is worth the risk of extending a player 3-4 years away from FA is worth it simply to obtain a slight discount for that player in the late years of his career.
  6. That play is a pretty good indicator, I think, that Gomez isn't up to par with Gordon in terms of speed. I doubt Gomez beats that out.
  7. I don't have an issue with moving him to 1st if you're doing it to begin a season, when he gets plenty of spring training reps and can learn the position. My issue is with rolling the dice trying to do it in the middle of August just to accommodate a poor offensive outfielder like Parra when he has not played 1 inning at the position in his entire career. Also, the Reynolds example doesn't really apply when he's been an equally bad defender at 1st as 3rd for almost his entire career. He improved to being an average defender at 1st last year and a plus one this year, but he didn't just move from 3rd to 1st for the first time and become a plus defender.
  8. Use Prince Fielder as an example: Prince was a bad but not catastrophic defender at 1B. What do you suppose his defensive metrics would have been if he was playing 3B? I'm willing to bet far worse than even Braun. The positions are not equivalent and one is simply much easier than the other. Prince Fielder was the worst defensive first baseman in MLB in 2013, 2010, and 2006, the 3rd worst in 2012, the 2nd worst in 2011, 2008, and 2007, the 8th worst in 2009. Surely this would qualify him as "catastrophic".
  9. I've provided a link for your convenience, Mr. Narron. http://mlbscoutingreports.com/
  10. Not going to hold off the Pirates and Cardinals with this kind of play.
  11. Lohse has just been junk his last 2 out of 3 starts.
  12. #1 - Who is saying to "bench" Braun? #2 - RBI's are not a good way to judge offensive performance.
  13. Not only can we give up outs on the bases, we can give them away defensively.
  14. Is it just me, or does Gomez seem a step slower this year? Not just the SB attempt there, but plenty of slow grounders that I see guys like Dee Gordon beating out and Gomez just doesn't seem to have the box to 1st speed that we saw in the past. Maybe it's just me. I think it's just I have always known him as one of the fastest in the game and he just seems merely "fast" this year, not one of the fastest.
  15. With 1 out, the risk/reward meter would say he needs to be halfway on that. If the ball is caught, there is 2 outs. The advantage of having Braun on 3rd instead of 2nd with 2 out is minimal. Instead, he cost a run by not being halfway. Had there been 0 out, I would be more understanding. I realize this is probably tough to realize in the spur of the moment, I'm just explaining my thought process on it now, anyway.
  16. Honestly, what redeeming value does Ed Sedar provide to this team on a year-to-year basis? Most of us are perfectly capable of rotating our arms in a circular motion. Also Braun, that's terrible either way. To get thrown out on THAT. You need to be at least halfway to 3rd on that.
  17. Respectfully...my whole point is that for what we expect from Ryan Braun, he is having a disappointing season. Not to debate whether or not Braun's worst is better than Mench's career years or not. Which of course I was doing myself as well. But I only used him to make a point.
  18. They need to get these next 2 innings in quickly. Giving up hits to the pitcher doesn't help. But that K does. Just keep the lead.
  19. It's only been on for a few days and I'm already sick to death of the damn Southwest "winglets" commercial..
  20. Mench had 1 almost full season with an OPS over .834 in 2004 when he put up a .874 over 481 plate appearances. That was good for an OPS+ of 116. Braun's .834 OPS this year is good for a 130 OPS+ as it is markedly more difficult to hit now than it was ten years ago. Braun at his very worst following a month long slump is still signficantly better than Mench was at his very best. Braun's season at this point is certainly not "significantly better" than a season with 26 HR's and a .874 OPS. I probably should have more accurately stated that's a "great" year for Kevin Mench back in the day.
