  1. Looked possibly safe, but I'm thinking he might have gotten a nick or brush tag on the rear. He didn't seem upset about the call or surprised when it wasn't overturned. I think he would know better than anyone and to me he didn't give an impression of a guy who thought he was safe.
  2. He's OPS'ing .834 and is on pace for less than 20 HR's. That's not Ryan Braun. That's a decent year for Kevin Mench back in the day. It's getting frustrating, especially with the magnitude of the new deal we signed him to.
  3. Gomez is lucky that was a wild pitch. He got a terrible jump and would have been a dead duck at 3rd.
  4. I'll accept this. This is why I think there needs to be a distinction made between "dumb" outs on base, and "aggressive" outs on base. Braun was being aggressive and just barely got nailed. It's still frustrating, obviously, against a guy like Kershaw when you're letting him off the hook, but I do agree that there is a difference between aggressive baserunning and just plain stupid baserunning. (ex. : Gomez getting thrown out trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs and Lucroy up)
  5. It's not perfect, but the alternate is the very real possibility that a crucial call will be blown in a playoff/World Series game that affects the outcome and it can't be changed because the available technology isn't used. I'd rather prevent that travesty and take the bad with the good.
  6. Gomez needs to stop having the green light to run at will. Just a completely fundamentally stupid move to try stealing 3rd with 2 out and Lucroy up.
  7. Let's just do that the easy way next time and pitch to the pitcher.
  8. Some people some to be under the impression that Gerardo Parra is a special player that needs to be on a lineup card. He isn't.
  9. For the love of God, why is Gomez STILL leading off? He has no clue up there right now.
  10. Francisco is what he is, and he's probably not a great everyday option at 1st, but we didn't need him to be. There's something to be said about the value of a guy who homers about every 15 plate appearances. Keeping Overbay was an overreaction on the defensive side because of the defensive issues last year. If you're going to keep a weak hitting 37 year old who is strictly a backup first baseman over a 27 year old who can play both infield positions, you had better be getting gold glove caliber defense. Overbay doesn't offer that.
  11. I think we often (and I have myself) underrate the importance of 1B defense. Partly because it might be the easiest position to fill in a pinch. You can, for instance, get by for a day in a pinch with Lucroy or Maldonado as your first baseman, but definitely not at SS or CF. But I would have to assume that the first baseman is involved in more balls in play than any other position. Range, a decent stretch, instincts (go for the ball, or cover the base?) and particularly an ability to snag short hops are all pretty important characteristics and probably lead to saving (or costing) a pretty decent amount of runs.
  12. Why do we assume that we could just plug Braun in at 1st and go? He has never played a single inning at 1st in his entire career. Now you want to just throw him in there 2/3rds of the way through the season, play at 1st against RHP (so basically every day) and expect passable defense from him? I don't particularly enjoy seeing Lyle Overbay in the lineup, but Gerardo Parra is not a guy that you shuffle Ryan Braun to a position he's never played just to accommodate every day playing time.
  13. That's all fine and good the first game you get beaned. Not the 4th in a row.
  14. Gomez has been hit by Cardinal pitching in the last 4 games against them. Whether or not you agree with payback, this is not an acceptable trend, and it needs to be addressed. Whether that means retaliation or addressing it to the league is not up to me, but it needs to be addressed. Ok, retaliate. Hit a guy. HEre is my question, and no one will ever answer it. Do you believe that it will make the Cardinals stop hitting batters? WHich is the stated purpose, yes? Why else are you giving a free base runner? I don't know the answer to that. I know that not knowing the answer to that doesn't absolve us from a responsibility to take actions to protect our players. Gomez is going to end up injured one of these times, and that's not okay, and Matheny deserves discipline for carrying it this far. I'm not directly suggesting retaliation, just suggesting that as one course of action. And if you do, I'm not advocating giving them a free runner. Just doing it in a situation that it doesn't hurt you (a blowout, or a situation where you would give an IBB anyway)
  15. Nothing drives me nuts in baseball more than watching someone walk guys with a big lead late. There is literally almost no difference in effect between a HR and a walk with a big lead late. Throw a damn strike.

  17. Nice to see we're hitting Waino, but they are really going to look back on some missed opportunities if they let St. Louis back in this. Bases loaded with 1 out twice and got nothing twice.
  18. Dumb sac bunt, dumb baserunning, way to kill a chance at a big inning.
  19. Not crazy about the sac bunt there. Obviously they just walk Herrera after that and get to face the pitcher.
  20. That was classy of Wainwright to groove a pitch to Ramirez like that.
  21. Braun: 0 for his last 18 Gomez: 0 for his last 18 Lucroy: 3 for his last 23 Ramirez: 4 for his last 25 The big boys are just killing us right now.
