  1. Because Gomez is with us for 3 years after this one, no more. He'll have one chance to test free agency and Boras will ensure he doesn't pass up on it this time. We are not set up to be a contender in the next 3 years anyway. And he's really, really valuable. I don't disagree with you about trading Braun though, especially when you'll never get more for him, he'll bring a mammoth return and he's probably going to be 35 by the time the Brewers are legitimate contenders again. People just automatically reject the thought of trading Braun because he's, well, the face of the franchise. So it would definitely be a big turning point for this franchise, and a risk. But a lot of that thought was the idea that we would continue to be contenders, or at least in barking range of contention, and that just doesn't look plausible now. Besides, why would Braun want to start over for a rebuilding Brewer team at this point in his career? He won't. He'll be ready to go to a contender.
  2. Who is this Cy Young candidate they added? I hope you don't mean Lohse because that would just be silly. Look this team was just barely a .500 team this off season before adding Lohse and probably closer to a sub .500 team. After adding Lohse not much changed. Withe Gallardo regressing this much this season you get a really bad team as there is no elite level pitching in the rotation. I expect Peralta to pitch better as the year goes on but that wont be enough to move the needle past a sub .500 team. Gallardo needs to pitch like he was in 2011 for this team to even have a better record. I am sorry but this rotation is rather bad especially with Gallardo performing like he is. No, it's a fact, at least if you go by the Cy Young voting last year, in which he was 7th in voting. The point is that he wasn't a Jeff Suppan addition. And the rotation certainly should be better. They've had worse ones in 2010, 2011. Of course now that we have two months of results, everyone says the rotation is garbage but no one seemed to think so when Lohse was added. Even if they didn't like the signing, which I really didn't myself. It's pointless now, just wasted money on a team that isn't contending anyway.
  3. I'm okay with trading Gomez for a few different reasons. First, I almost guarantee Gomez will be testing free agency next time. Obviously if he could do it over again, Boras would have done that this time. So we have Gomez for 3 years after this one and then he's gone. I don't see us competing in that time frame anyway. Gomez should have tremendous value right now. A centerfielder with elite defense, speed, and power, who hits for average and power and is reasonably priced? Rare. It would take 3 top 100 prospects for me to part with Gomez right now.
  4. Do we even have one single top 100 prospect? Top 150 even?
  5. Not whatsoever, for several different reasons. #1, player development is much more a product of the coaching staff than the manager himself. I don't credit Roenicke for the performances of Segura and Gomez any more than I don't blame him for the shortcomings of Lucroy and Weeks. #2, Segura and Gomez are plenty talented enough to be doing what they're doing. I realize that it's exceeding expectations, but these are tremendously talented players. This isn't a couple Casey McGehees performing way over their heads. #3, we are 19-30. What difference does it make if everyone is hitting .320, if we are 19-30. I would be much more supportive of Roenicke if he had no talent to work with and Nori Aoki was his best offensive player. There's plenty of talent, some tremendous individual performances, and yet our bottom line is still 19-30. And I should commend Roenicke for that because we've got some great players despite our horrible record?
  6. I'm fine with bringing up Scooter but I can't imagine that any team is willing to pick up Weeks' salary next year. I think we are stuck with him. Not without eating a significant portion from this year and next at least.
  7. One thing that certainly makes me question Roenicke's competence is how he can be getting so little out of what he has to work with. I can't imagine that any manager in baseball is getting less out of the overall talent that he has. This team has some really, really good players. One could easily argue that they have 3 elite players in the lineup at their respective positions. If Braun, Gomez, and Segura arent the best players at their respective positions, they're certainly close. I realize the pitching has killed them, but even there, they added a Cy Young candidate at the top to pair with a still young all-star caliber starter. It's not like he is being asked to work miracles with John Jaha and Cal Eldred as his best players. Don't think he's being asked to squeeze blood out of stones. He's not. Look at some of the horrid Brewers rosters from the late 90's and early 2000's, then look at this one. It's flabbergasting that this one right now is heading down the same road record-wise and sitting at 19-30.
  8. Was Hernandez' call on the home run right or wrong? I can't watch today.
  9. It's amazing how Segura and Gomez can be this good and the Brewers be this bad.
  10. I think this year also highlights how much more important starting pitching is than your bullpen. A bad bullpen can cost you a playoff spot (last year). A bad rotation can make you a really bad team.
  11. I do agree with this. I think that if the team were to go the rebuilding route, Melvin shouldn't be retained for it, but it won't make a bit of difference if Mark A can't step away and not interfere. I think the rotation will improve as well, but by the time they do, the bullpen may falter -- they aren't putting up a 3.14 ERA all year. So it's difficult for me to see this team being north of .500 again this year.
  12. I can't imagine Weeks having any trade value at all anymore. I'd put him on waivers in August and hope some GM is dumb enough to claim him, but I think that was more of a strategy for last year and probably wouldn't work now.
  13. I think Mark A's best course of action right now would be to accept a full blown rebuild, but I don't think he will. I don't know if he has it in him. We just aren't good enough to continue on this path. This year to year, patch the holes and try again approach is fine if you're a .500 team that just needs a little tweaking, but we no longer are. Guys coming up like Scooter Gennett, Hunter Morris, Johhny Hellweg...these are nice complementary prospects. They aren't ones that are going to improve you to contender status from one 10 games under .500. I actually think a patient, long-term rebuild is probably the best course of action at this point, but I'm sure the idea of willingly taking the Brewers out of contention for 5 years is pretty scary, especially considering how long it took to get the state of Wisconsin interested in the team again. Especially when such a strategy would probably even involve shopping Braun. I know that sounds insane, but under a 5 year rebuilding plan, why wouldn't they? Braun would be 34-35 by the time they were in contention again, and I'm sure he's probably not interested in being part of a rebuilding effort at this point in his career.
  14. The philosophy of the franchise the last 5 years is, reload not rebuild. Unfortunately, they've reached the point where there is not enough ammo left to reload, either on the farm or in spending money.
  15. The projections for having a contender again in 2015 seem awfully optimistic to me. Who is coming up that is going to make that happen, especially pitching-wise? Seems like more net losses coming in the next couple years than net gains. Even if we trade guys, we should be targetting high upside prospects, not MLB ready ones like we have in the past. As tough as it is for me to accept, I think we are realistically 5 years away from a contender again. That's if we cut our losses, turn our focus to scouting and coaching at the minor league level, and do this the right way and rebuild a solid foundation. Or we can keep running in circles like this every year and pretend we have enough to be a contender going into every season.
  16. Unless Hart just lights it up in June and July, I can't see him netting much. Not for a rental coming off an injury.
  17. I had to laugh when someone said "Ted Thompson needs to learn a thing or two from Doug Melvin" after the Lohse signing. Yeah, I'm sure Ted Thompson is just completely envious of the sports business model that Melvin has put together. In fairness to Melvin, Thompson at least doesn't have someone standing over his shoulder overruling him when he wants to do something different.
  18. Considering I thought A-Rams return would have a big positive affect (not that he's been a problem), I would say little to none. Hart isn't going to improve this pitching staff. We're 10 games under .500 and already have 5 starters hitting over .300.
  19. I'm just disgusted with the product we're getting right now. I don't understand how anyone could look at what is going on right now and think thay this franchise has a solid foundation in place and is headed in the right direction.
  20. David Forst of the A's and Thad Levine of the Rangers would be my top choices. There are some very bright young minds out there that might make great potential GM's. The most important quality to me right now is an emphasis on scouting and a GM with the time and patience to weather what is looking more and more like a rebuilding project. There is no one that can be fully effective unless Mark A agrees to step back and relinquish control over personnel decisions, however.
  21. It doesn't even really matter what we think, because the most likely scenario is inevitable. Mark A will express his disappointment after the season but talk about some nice promising things like Segura and Gomez. He will talk about what needs to be improved but point to the 96 win season in 2011 to justify keeping the manager and coaching staff. We will go sign a token veteran FA. We may scrape together whatever remaining top prospects we can find in our system to land another starter, and hope we can pass ourselves off to our fanbase as a potential contender next year.
  22. I don't need to see a publicized plan, but some real-life evidence of its existence would be appreciated. Signing Kyle Lohse in March isn't real strong evidence of a plan. I don't have as much faith in the current FO as you. I'm not sure they have any plan for 2015 in mind. Judging by recent history I would guess they are much more focused on seeing if there is any way they can contend in 2014, of which realistically I would have to think there is not. Having a long-term plan involves more than just trying to sign your good young players to multi-year deals. What evidence in the last 5 years have we seen beyond that of a long-term plan?
  23. How is 2015 even viable? We are a bad team now as it is. So looking ahead to 2015, we're looking at a team with Ramirez gone, Hart probably gone, Gallardo possibly gone, and Lohse probably ineffective if we don't trade him by then I'm sure you are presuming we can get some trade value at the deadline, but there just isn't that much of value there outside of Braun, Segura, and Gomez, who most people consider untouchable. Ramirez and Lohse, while good players, aren't going to bring back top prospects. Not when you consider their age and contracts. While you can't project what will happen between now and 2015 on the farm, there certainly doesn't appear to be nearly good enough quality coming up in the next 2 years to turn this team around. And we aren't going to have the money to continue to try to plug all these holes in the pitching staff via free agency.
  24. For those of you who may not have noticed yet, this team is in serious trouble.
  25. And it looks like you were completely off. The vote of confidence means nothing. There aren't too many firings in MLB history that were preceded by a harsh statement from the owner or GM of a definite hot seat. Even Yost got a "vote of confidence" from Mark A.
