  1. If Braun is acquitted, he should write an article about how Buster Olney should give back his Associated Press journalism award.
  2. I agree with the fact that Prince/Yuni/McGehee and Gamel/Gonzo/Ramirez is pretty close to a wash, but I think everyone just naturally seems to assume that because Prince was not a good defender, Gamel will be a nice upgrade defensively -- and that's something that we really don't know yet.
  3. Here's the new rules on arbitration: Major league free agent compensation will be completely revised in 2013, with a team having to offer its former players who became free agents the average of the top 125 contracts -- currently about $12.4 million -- to receive draft-pick compensation if a player signs with a new team. It eliminates the statistical formula that had been in place since the 1981 strike settlement. So no way would the Brewers offer Marcum arbitration at that level for 2013. Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. That sucks, basically what it means to me is that it's going to be a lot harder for small market teams to get compensation for their very good, but sub-elite players entering free agency. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me especially for purposes of competitive balance.
  4. I'm happy to have K-Rod back. It's big late inning insurance for us, and I do feel that "idiot-proofing" the 8th/9th for Roenicke probably saves us more wins than sabermetrics can measure, as he demonstrated last season before we acquired K-Rod.
  5. Greinke is almost assuredly going to be the more expensive of the two, while the production edge has been slightly on Marcum's side. Still, just in my opinion, this one is a no-brainer to invest in Greinke. Do that and you have to feel pretty good about having two ace-caliber pitchers at the top of your rotation for years to come. Plus, now might not be a bad time to lock up Greinke long-term -- he's coming off two years that were probably a little disappointing by his standards. Marcum to me is a much more risky investment and a perfect candidate to leave unsigned and offer arbitration to at the end of the season. He accepts it, great, you keep him around on a one-year deal and keep your rotation stacked without having to commit long-term to him. He declines, you happily take the picks and move on.
  6. Sure, the Brewers could shed payroll to add Prince, it would probably cost them 2 of 3 of Wolf, K-Rod, and Hart, which would make them worse overall.
  7. What evidence has Prince ever given that he feels this way? I'm sure that most FA's would rather play for a winner, but players hire Boras to get top dollar, not to find them a contender to sign with. Plus a lot can change in the balance of MLB over the span of a multi-year deal.
  8. I think this year's team (- Prince + Gamel, -McGehee/Betancourt + Ramirez/Gonzalez), is pretty much a wash at this point. Yes Prince is a big loss, but we do get better defensively, and don't underestimate having K-Rod all year vs. just a couple of months. Having Loe as our setup man cost us a pretty good number of wins in the first half last year, and hopefully Roenicke has also learned from some of his mistakes last year. Even if the 2012 Brewers are slightly worse than the 2011 Brewers, which is debatable, we were still a 96 win team last year and 90 is usually about the magic number for getting in so we have some cushion. And it's all about getting in -- once you're there you've got a shot. The best team doesn't always come out as the champs as we saw with the Cardinals last year.
  9. You mean 50 right? Unless I missed something -- I would be celebrating if Braun only was to miss 25 games.
  10. Parra doesn't really profile as a LOOGY though, nor does Braddock, so it will be interesting to see if one or both of them make the pen, and if we end up seeking an actual LOOGY this year from somewhere.
  11. Most Brave fans who watched him last year though say he's a much better fielder than his last year UZR would indicate. UZR says he was a very good fielder from 2006 until 2010. I guess I'm having a hard time trusting UZR lately anyway ever since it indicated that Casey McGehee was a very good fielder in 2011.
  12. Not sure of the source, but this link says we can indeed release him before the season to save the money: http://www.rantsports.com...uez-accepts-arbitration/
  13. How does the $2.33M thing work? Arby is not guaranteed until the season, just 1/6th of it, so I'm guessing closer to $2M. I don't see Doug doing that though, that would be embarrassing for him to take on $2M of unnecessary dead money that he could have just avoided by declining.
  14. Scotty Po, Overbay and Sexson are all 6 years or more removed. Not saying Melvin has never sold high, but none of those guys are representative of recent trends.
  15. I like how Axford gets sent out now that the game is over. Could've used him with runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 3rd and kept 2 runs off the board...or in the 1st...but nope, gotta stick to that book. I will never understand managers who play the game worrying about what they will do in the later innings when they've got bases loaded and the game probably in the balance already staring them right in the face.
  16. He'll go wherever the most money is, I'm afraid, whether it's the Brewers or Cubs. I don't get the feeling that Prince has strong enough personal feelings either way about being a Milwaukee Brewer one way or another. His friends on the team, yes, but the organization, no.
  17. Sure they can on most days, if the rest of the offense scores 6 runs. Braun and Fielder haven't carried their weight today, but when you've scored 6 runs and aren't even close to the lead, Braun and Fielder aren't the reason we aren't winning.
  18. Sure. But if you think Roenicke hasn't been clearly outmanaged by LaRussa this series, I very much disagree.
  19. Braun, STOP pressing. You're down 6. You're not going to get us back in this game with 1 swing. If he's going to walk you, take the walk.
  20. We can proudly wear those NL Central Champion T-shirts all we want this offseason, but this game should leave a pretty sour taste in the mouth of this entire organization all off-season. Both because Game 6 was so brutal and because it came against the St. Louis Cardinals.
  21. I would like to take a crowbar to this homeplate umpires face. Horribly inconsistent on that low strike today.
  22. (clown music plays) "Doo doo doo da doo da dooo da doo dah"
  23. Please stop showing the Nissan Frontier doing things that it cannot do.
  24. It's sad, that 3-2 pitch was clearly outside, but with the ridiculous outside corner, he can't chance it.
  25. I'd keep firing at the outside corner if I was Salas too, if the umpire is going to continue to give him 6 inches off it.
