  1. Graffy's more of a rehabbing major leaguer that needs some time in the minors rather than the washed out now minor leaguer trying to get back to the show. Same reason Weeks playing some games in the minors might make the major league forum. Best of luck to Graffy. Not a great player, but has made a nice career doing something fun.
  2. It's not really a trade for a manager. It's a "Hey, if you do this trade I'll let my manager out of his contract so he can sign with you" kind of thing. A team makes a one sided trade and suddenly the manager is released and signs with the other team.
  3. Melvin ignored the staff ace that has been injured and has failed to win more than 12 games in the last 3 years. It's perfect to say we should have signed him in hindsight, but we need to think of what it was like before the season. Melvin is getting poo poo'd for Suppan, imaging if he gave Sheets a huge contract and he got injured again? People would be saying Melvin can't put together a staff by overpaying for Sheets and Suppan. The only thing we can do is hope Benny will give us a home town discount. But I have a feeling someone is going to put a $125-$150M check in front of Sheets that will make it real hard to take Milwaukee's $100M.
  4. Who would have guessed in June of 07 that our starting 5 will be what they are now.
  5. BABIP is the best way to determine luck. If one player has 40% of his balls in play land as hits (C. Jones) and another only has 20% (R. Weeks), we can statistically say one has been luckier than the other. A guy that strikes out and doesn't make contact (3TO) will still have a high BABIP but a low BA, so we know it isn't bad luck that is preventing him from getting more hits. The first two can be expected to regress towards the mean in BABIP. Stat heads would say it's inevitable that the first player will see his BA drop, the second will see his BA rise, and the third is about where he will stay. ****Don't quote me on those numbers, or relative numbers. I was just throwing names out there to give some perspective. They could be totally off, but I used the names to help make a point.
  6. Brown was Oakland's 5th pick overall. They had 7 first round picks because the lost 3 Type A players: Giambi, Damon, and Isringhausen. Brown wasn't supposed to go that high (or at all), but Beane had extra picks to take a flyer on players that might not have otherwise been drafted. Also, Brown probably didn't sign such a large contract as another "true" first round pick might have. Having that many picks they almost had to take a flyer on some lower level ones just to keep payroll down. They took Swisher with their first (16th overall) pick. He seems to have been an ok pick. The #1, #1 has pitched in a whopping 6 MLB games. Though that might be expected from the Pirates. But take away points from Beane for calling Milwaukee stupid for drafting Fielder.
  7. If the case is really him being uncomfortable being the "leadoff" man who needs to take pitches, then I'd have him change his approach. I like batters who abuse the pitch count, but I'd rather he rip into those tasty fastballs if it meant he turned into a .300 hitter than the Mendoza line he has going. Even if he needs to lead off.
  8. Chc: 9-3 against Pit Mil: 2-1 against Pit StL: 4-5 against Pit That's 9 extra games against the worst team in the NL, if not baseball. The Cubs have evened out the home/away difference in the last month, but there is still the extra games against Pit, and the fact that Chc didn't have to play at Fenway. I think this is just showing that it is entirely possible for the Brewers to catch up, especially if we maintain a winning record against the Cards and Cubs.
  9. The Brewers probably wait a day after someone pitches to officially announce them as starter again. Probably just a precaution in case he is hurt. I bet he's listed by tomorrow.
  10. It isn't a small time crime. The catcher wanted to injure an ump because of some blown calls? Not someone to walk on to a low level college baseball team. Yes, the catcher did look like he was going for a curve ball. But he was blocking a curve ball in the dirt on a pitch that was too high to be a strike. That would have been one heck of a curve. IMHO he was faking the "I'm trying to catch a curve".
  11. Maybe he doesn't walk because he's so good at hitting the strikes that are thrown. Someone like Branyan will get more walks simply because 3TO will swing and miss, giving the pither more opprotunity to throw balls.
  12. What if the senario was thus: DM offers Boras $60M over 5 years. Boras is looking for $50/4 or $75/6. Either way Prince is looking at 6 digits this year. DM decides he can't come close to Baras and submits a $400K contract that Prince has to accept. I think it's perfectly understandable that he would be upset and feel underpaid in that situation.
  13. The Yankees should join the 21st century and realize the league needs to move to a 100% revenue sharing, strict salary cap economy. Every other sport has made the step, when will baseball? Somehow, I don't see The Little Stein seeing "moving into the 21st century" as a good thing in this regard. Don't want a debate about the economy, just pointing out (as if it wasn't obvious) how stupid his comments are.
  14. I don't see how we hire Randolph. He played for the Brewers in the 90s, not the 80s.
  15. The organizational mindset might also be because of the playing fields. The Keg is a smallish park that doesn't offer many 3Bs or inside-the-parkers. Hitters that have decent pop to the gaps excell in our field, hitting a lot of homers. We draft the best bats we can find and figure out where they stand on defense latter. The Triple H Dome has an amazingly fast field with large gaps to put the ball into and run. So thier players need to be able to play very sound defensively to get to and stop those balls. They don't need the big boppers, since a bunch of quick guys that can hit line drives over the infielders heads will end up with huge numbers of extra base hits.
  16. Seth is obviously better because he got the "W". I don't think the platoon will work simply for practical reasons. Bush is our worst starter right now. The problem is that we don't have anyone to replace him in the rotation. Heck, people would have dropped over dead if they were told before the season McClung would not only be a starter, he wouldn't even be our worst starter. And I don't think any team is offering a pitcher we would want without expecting Braun or Hart in return.
  17. Here's what erks me: At the end of the season, all anyone can talk about is that Melvin didn't "go out and get someone". For years there were complaints that the Brewers weren't active in the free agent market. These people (ie people that don't post here, your Friday night Brewer fans) have no clue about what it takes to sign the stud they think should be signed for $2M. Melvin goes out and has, imho, a decent off season. Kendall-Isn't a world beater, but was better than what we had and plays a defense first position for about 28 teams. Mota-Isn't a world beater, but got him for just agreeing to pay his salary Torres-Once he decided not to retire this became a great deal Cam-Stud defensive player, swings an averagish bat, and changed Braun from a one dimentional player into a cornerstone franchise player. Kapler-Signed a minor league coach who is now a very good option off the bench Branyan-I won't start the firestorm here, but not a "bad" move He makes one pretty bad move in Gagne, but it was a high risk/high reward type move that was off the books at the end of the year. So what? We knew it was that type of signing the day it was done, no reason to cry now.
  18. I think Russ has stats to back this up, but I believe it is a bad move to "ride the hot bat". Kapler and Dillon have been insanely good this year, but that means they will become insanely bad at some point to regress to the mean. You can't look at what has happened in the last week or month, but what has happened over the entire career and what they project to do this year. Kapler and Dillon have both been out of baseball, and neither could land a starting gig. So the question becomes "who do you think will have better stats after 600 ABs against this pitcher this year?". I don't know if Hernan is the answer, but one could assume most teams don't have a good scouting report on him, especially the night he was called up. Not a clear cut choice imho. Now, the choice to put in Julian Tavaraz in a 1 run game the day after an off day...
  19. Personally, I like the hill and flagpole in center field. I don't consider the stadium a "bandbox" (that designation is for GAB in Cinncy), but I do see why some people don't like the Crawford box cheap HR. Fenway has it because of space constraints, Houston did it on purpose. The only thing I don't like about the stadium (besides the number of loses the Brewers have there) is the name. I say you should be stuck with Enron Field for 20 years :p
  20. Here is the answer that would probably come out of Ned's mouth: "First, Cam had the night off. He was told in the morning he had the night off to get his head on straight so he contribute to the offense. Suddenly putting him in there in the eighth inning for defense wouldn't give him the proper 'off day' that he needs. Second, I could use Branyan for Hall in the seventh, but that wouldn't show confidence in Hall. Also, I might need Branyan to pitch hit for the pitcher in the 14th inning. I've got to leave my options open in case it goes extra. That's the same reason the back up catcher never even thinks about playing." I don't agree with the logic, but there it is. I'm sure Yost read about it in chapters 3 and 8 in The Book. If you don't follow The Book you'll be banished from baseball. And that's the real reason Pete Rose is no where to be found. (retrospection: the last sentence sounds like DM)
  21. I thought this was going to be a joke or something. In AAA and AA they care about winning games and will pull him to accommodate. In A he can pitch for as long as he likes, and he shouldn't need to come out because of trouble unless he's walking dudes. But I can you imagine the story of the A ball hitter who jacks one on Willis?
  22. 1) Bill Hall is a guess hitter. Too many times he guesses ball, or guesses offspead and gets caught with a fastball right by him. That's just the nature of Hall, strike out a lot but have a strong slg because of it. Many of his HRs are him guessing correctly. 2) Rickie is hitting near the mendoza line. Which means if you watch one game in person you might see Rickie go 1-5. 3) Has been covered by others, but I acutally think it is better than in other years.
  23. I wasn't hoping for a lousy road trip, nor hoping to get Ned fired because of it. I was simply predicting that the Brewers will go 1-5 on the trip and was also predicting that the fans will blame Ned for them doing bad. Valpo's batting 2 for 2. Win a game we should have won and lose a game handily. I guess we eek out a win on Saturday.
  24. Gwynn has a projected .262/.338/.372 and a 0.8 WARP his your best projectection. Hardy hit .278/.329/.475 and a 6.2 WARP last year. Hart had a .299/.357/.588 and a 7.4 WARP last year. How is Hart ranked barely above Gwynn and lower than Hardy?
  25. The day the courts allowed the Pilots to leave Seattle was a pretty big one too. And the day we decided to move to the NL. Or the day The Keg was green lighted.
