  1. Phillies in 2008 had a 4.23 ERA from their starters, good for 7th in the NL. 2006 the Cardinals had the 12th best ERA in the NL. You can win with mediocre starting pitching. You just need good defense and good hitting. The Brewers have good hitting, but have terrible defense and had an awful bullpen the first 2 months of the season.
  2. A simple guide: http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/08/03/your-guide-to-understanding-baseballs-waiver-process/ But the basics are: 1) You get put on waivers. 2) NL teams get first shot at NL players, and vice versa for the AL. This is done in reverse order of record (worst to first). 3) If a player is claimed by a team, they have 2 days to either trade for him, or the team who currently owns the player may either pull him back or simply give him up for nothing. 4) If a player goes unclaimed through the waiver process, he is free to be traded to any team, just like any trade before Aug 1st.
  3. Name me some of those, please. WAR may not be perfect, but, by no means is it showing that Seattle, as a team, should be having a good year. The fact is Seattle has Ichiro and... well... Ichiro this season.
  4. A replacement for Jody Gerut next year.... a LH 4th OF type. Good job, Crew. Getting something for a soon-to-be nothing.
  5. I stopped using itunes to sync my ipod for my music... switched over to media monkey.
  6. Try this link
  7. They are also the only franchise to win a title in 3 cities.
  8. Cuban had a great post about his experience on his blog. He doesn't go into great details, but the overview was pretty cool to read about.
  9. If you have a local store and it's small, I'd bet if you asked them to save some of their 4x 6 pack boxes for you, they would. All they do is toss 'em anyway.
  10. You're misreading that. That is a 0.055 percent chance at the division. As in, 5.5 times in 10,000 not 5.5 in 100. They are out of it. As for why they are out of it? They'd have to win at least 90 to win the WC or the division, most likely. They are 52-59 with 51 games remaining. They'd have to go 38-13 to get to 90 wins. That's .745 winning percentage, or 120 wins over a full season. That just doesn't happen.
  11. UZR is per 150 games, so sitting at -5 per 150 games, each game played is 7 defensive games, so that means they are giving up an out every 4 or so games. I guess I don't think that is insignificant. They also have, by far, the biggest gap between FIP and ERA in baseball at 0.65.
  12. Alright, Thunder, here is what I want to know: What are your expectations for a team who is a distant 4th in payroll in it's own division (and closer to being 5th than to being 3rd)?
  13. Just got last minute tickets. Getting ready for an early trip to the lot. Hope to see Cain roaming the drunken confines in CF tonight.
  14. There was a game, sometime in April or May, where they had the "Time warner triple play", the final clue, of the three was "His middle name is Diego" the guy proceeded to guess Jim Edmonds.
  15. My understanding is, in a lower run scoring, lower slugging era, the threshold is lower, because the extra base is much more valuable... e.g. if Prince is hitting (the 1990's) the extra base is way less valuable than when Escobar is hitting (the 1960's). And for where the 75% thing came from, a good explanation can be found here.
  16. If you can identify ahead of time which games they will and will not be hitting HR's or doubles, then by all means, turn on the running game when they won't be.I just don't think you can do that. With a team with such a high slugging as the Brewers, the SB% would have to be much higher. Guys should be running when Lucroy, Escobar, Gomez and the pitcher are up as they need "more help" to get the run home. Not when Weeks through McGehee are hitting, which is why Rickie should almost never steal a base. The guys hitting behind him hit way too many HR's and doubles, which will score him from first anyway.
  17. http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/mlb/news/story?id=5440748 Looks like it's gonna be tough for the BoSox to make a playoff push. Talk about riddled by injuries. Maybe the 'crew will ship them Edmonds.
  18. I'm pretty sure the team's strength is hitting HR's. The 'Crew could very well have 6 of 8 positions hitting 20+ HRs this season. 4 of them hitting 30+. They are 2nd in the NL (Cincinatti) and 5th in MLB in slugging. As for pitchers changing their approach, the count and hitter will always be more important than whether someone is on 1B. Wouldn't the pitcher be more likely to throw a sinker in hopes of getting a double play grounder?
  19. Yeah, it would be a CS, 2-3. On your scorecard, that is.
  20. I've never seen Braun swinging to make contact as much as I have this season. A few times in that Cubs series, he was wagging the bat through the zone, almost like a right handed Ichiro. Before this season, he'd swing through more pitches, but he was always swinging hard. It seems as though his approach, at least to me (and I'm by no means an expert), has changed.
  21. It's an easily drinkable tasty wheat beer that isn't overly wheaty. If that makes sense. I'm not a big fan myself, but I know many people who swear by it.
  22. ARod says, "Take that, ARod!" http://www.sportsofboston.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/031809_a_rod.jpg
  23. He'll never succeed with his elbow like that.
  24. I don't think that is correct... at least...according to things I've read...
  25. Don't give her any pointers, and everything will be ok. Pointers make people hate golf. I'd argue that's true of anything. Only give advice when it's asked for... especially when you're talking things you do for recreation.
