  1. Right. And if we believe that the current success is due to luck/timing, then the odds are poor that the success will be sustained. However, if we believe in our organization, then the odds are actually quite high that they will be able to replenish the talent.
  2. Tampa Bay Rays MLB ranking in ERA+: 2022: 6 2021: 10 2020: 6 2019: 4 2018: 10 2017: 11 The Rays show that sustained pitching excellence can be achieved by a small market with a low payroll. It can also be done without a Cy Young and reliever of the year winner on the pitching staff. Saying that the Brewers' current pitching was a product of mostly luck and timing is taking credit away from the front office, coaching, and analytics staffs for what they have achieved. Any yes, as BallFour notes, the next generation of pitching will be acquired by trading the current generation of pitching. Hader was the first step in that process but there will be more trades to come.
  3. I think the "We're going to squander generational pitching" narrative is a bunch of baloney that is fed by our historically miserable pitching. All of the other serious pennant contenders have equal or better pitching than us. What we call "generational" is what they expect to see every year. There's nothing special or generational about being in the top-10 in the league in pitching. It should be the expectation for a team that is run as well as the Brewers are. We did not get lucky to have the talent we do, it was acquired and managed through a series of smart decisions. The names on the jerseys change but the standard of excellence remains the same.
  4. B Nothing but praise for fully embracing the Rays’ strategy and moving Hader for a solid return while still managing to upgrade the bullpen. I really don’t want them to end this run of being a perennial playoff contender and this goes a long way towards keeping them competitive. They lose points for not getting a bat but there wasn’t an obvious move to make not an obvious hole in the lineup to fill. This is a top-10 offense so it’s not a huge need.
  5. It's like a half hour from Scottsdale. The main reason to go to that area would be to get some authentic Mexican food, which I am obsessed with and cannot get in my current locale. We also found a bakery+coffee (pregame) and a good paletas place (postgame) in that general area. I can't remember the names of any of them, there are like 10 options on google. It's only a "scary" neighborhood if you are afraid of establishments where everyone speaks Spanish. I liked it way better than having to trek all the way over to Peoria which was surrounded by the usual suburban stuff. EXCEPT Peoria has a Portillos which I make an exception for. I wouldn't bother going just to see the grounds if there isn't an event.
  6. Last year the Mariners traded Kendall Gravemen at the deadline and the media had all the same reports of the clubhouse being pissed, having a closed door meeting, etc. etc. They won a couple games and everyone was over it in a week. The same will happen here.
  7. Our offense is statistically better than our pitching so we actually needed arms.
  8. I love the guy, but man, he's challenging Lorenzo Cain for worst batting performance of 2022.
  9. This is a gigantic win for the Brewers, keeping Soto out of the NL Central and especially out of St. Louis. The Cardinals have done nothing to improve. The storylines of a Brewers/Padres wild card matchup would be pretty interesting. Certainly this solidifies the Padres as a serious postseason contender this year. We don't even know if Soto will end up signing with San Diego. They already are close to maxing out their payroll. They might have to blow the whole thing up in little over two years.
  10. Nelson Cruz hit 457 HR after we traded him + El Caballo for Kevin Mench and Francisco Cordero… We got Cruz for essentially free (Keith Ginter lol) so maybe it’s a zero sum game, but that one really hurts because Boomstick was a true star right when we were going on our playoff runs.
  11. The Brewers have been acting more like Rays for a while now, but 2022 appears to be the year that we decided to fully embrace the "constantly competing and rebuilding at the same time" strategy. Personally I love it.
  12. In the 2018 playoffs he had 7 appearances, 10 IP, 16 K, 1 BB, 0 ER. That's the bar he set for himself. Whether or not it is fair to expect any relief pitcher to be lights out in those moments, I don't know. Not all relief pitchers have won reliever of the year 3 times... If the Brewers are ever going to end their pennant drought, they need someone who is going to be unhittable in those moments or they need to go with a committee approach.
  13. His most valuable contribution was those 3 dominant scoreless innings in game 7 of the NLCS. That was one of those cases where we maybe should have rode him until his arm fell off.
  14. I know there's a 0.00001% chance of this happening, but it would be hilarious if the Brewers packaged the Hader return as part of a Soto trade.
  15. Yes yes yes!!! I love that we're going full Tampa Bay Rays and not giving up on being competitive after 2024. Small sample, but Hader hasn't been very good in the postseason. I don't think he will be missed as much as we may fear.
  16. Even with full electrification of passenger vehicles, miles driven still need to be reduced by 33% to hit the Paris climate goals.
  17. I actually hate the "x months old" thing and would jokingly refer to my daughter as "0 years old". But at this age their language skills are developing so fast that there is a huge difference between a couple of months. Did the MLB logo test, she pointed at the white dot and said "ball".
  18. If the Brewers make a move for Gallo, it's going to be because their analytics department sees something fixable in his swing or approach. There is going to be a cost to him, we're not the only fanbase that is intrigued. And he doesn't really plug any holes for us, in fact he further complicates existing logjams because he's more of a corner outfielder/DH than a CF.
  19. I have a 17 month old! She recently learned how to say "baseball". I'm going to ask her what this logo is and report back.
  20. Unfortunately natural gas still emits about 60-70% of the CO2 that diesel does. Obviously much, much better in terms of particulate pollution, SO2, and NOx. Plus it has the same problems with global supply and geopolitics that every other hydrocarbon does. Extraction from farms and landfills requires new technology and infrastructure (I have a close friend who works on this problem). It's worth doing, but it's not a scalable solution when methane is easy to extract in other ways. In a couple of US cities they are running some pilots of battery-powered buses. Batteries actually work well for buses because there is always down time at the beginning/end of a route to charge. And as noted earlier, stop/go vehicles are ideal for electrification. I do think that long haul semi trucks and heavy machinery will be the last to transition. It's been interesting already to see that oil companies have not made any effort to increase production during the latest price spike. The reality is that electrification is going to drop oil demand in the 5-10 year time horizon. It looks like massive green energy and electric vehicle credits may be on the way from Congress if the proposed bill gets passed.
  21. Yep, it's weird to go back into an ICE vehicle and press the gas pedal and wonder why it takes forever for the vehicle to respond. Or why they handle so poorly because they are top heavy and there is no power in the rear wheels. Or why you have to press the brakes so hard to make them stop. And them I'm like...uhh...I have to go to a special store to buy gas??? And take it to a shop every 5,000 miles to change the oil? They are literal pieces of junk compared with EVs. As soon as the price is equivalent, which will happen in the next 5-10 years or sooner, the EVs will fly off the shelves. Then 5-10 years after that we'll see 75%+ of gas stations closing due to lack of demand. The people left with ICE vehicles will have to drive 10-20 minutes out of their way to get gas while the supercharging stations will be everywhere. So it will actually be faster to supercharge than refill with gas.
  22. I wonder what the impact on TV ratings would be to start the games at 6 or 6:30. I feel like almost everyone who attends games in person would be in favor of it, but if the TV folks say no, then it's never happening. At least many teams have switched to 6:40 starts in April/September in recent years.
  23. If I were the Red Sox I would sell and sell hard. Two of the three AL Wild Cards are locks (Tampa and Toronto). Only the last spot is up for grabs and teams like Seattle, Cleveland, and the White Sox have an easier path to get there. It's not fun to be in the AL East when even Baltimore is a playoff contender now.
  24. The challenge with the Brewers is that they are good, not great at virtually every position. So many potential upgrades are either marginal or depth additions. Neither really excites me. I get more excited about pitching upgrades. Can never have enough pitching. Keston Hiura was putting up better numbers than many of these guys (until he got in a fist fight with Counsell or whatever mystery thing he did to end up on the naughty list).
  25. There might be some truth to the "Stearns all-in" theory if the Brewers actually did this. The question I have is, would Soto get us over the hump and get us a World Series appearance? In my view, the current team is more than 1 bat away from being favorites to with the NL Pennant. In theory Soto gets you a shot at 2023 and 2024 as well, but financially we wouldn't be able to afford the pieces needed to plug holes around him. At the end of the day, I'd rather go shopping in free agency than rent Soto. Having to pay a big salary AND give up a ton of talent is a steep price to pay.
