  1. It’s worth remembering that a top-2 record in the NL is kinda equivalent to “winning” a playoff series. Especially given the way the wild card round has cursed us.
  2. I’m feeling greedy…let’s win 100 this year.
  3. As others have said, I tend to subscribe to the belief that you are what your record is. So the answer to OP's question is yes. Have they gotten lucky? Not really. Their pythagorean record is 58-41, only one game off of their actual record. Do they have as much "on paper" talent as their competition? I would say no. Certainly not compared with LA. But injuries and underperformance is what it is. Do they have the talent to be the #1 team in MLB after 162? I certainly think so and it seems like many here do as well. I agree that you have to add talent at the deadline to keep up with the competition. I don't think they will trade away major league talent even though they are in a rare position of having surplus. If they are going to add and not get into bidding wars, I would add vets who have been on multiple deep postseason runs. That's one area we are lacking relative to some of the teams that we may be going up against in October.
  4. Yeah true, I'm not giving Woo enough credit. Not much difference between their top 4 overall. Woo is the one that has managed to stay healthy and Castillo tends to get better as the season goes on.
  5. It was one thing to beat up on a poverty franchise like the Dodgers, but the Mariners are playing good ball right now and have their three best starters going in this series. The key to beating them is getting to their middle relievers, who have struggled and just threw a ton of innings in the last 2 games.
  6. We’re clearly better than them right now. Would likely be a deep series if we see them in October.
  7. Does anyone know what the rotation order is post-ASB? Hoping to catch Miz in Seattle next week.
  8. There are like 10 teams interested in Geno and a team with loaded minor leagues like the Mariners is going to offer a buffet option of top prospects.
  9. I know we’re all used to the overachievement by now but I’m still in awe of what I’m witnessing with this team. Long way to go but it’s going to be a fun ride.
  10. MLB fans: “MLB is terrible at marketing its star players” MLB: makes the hottest young pitcher in the game an all-star MLB fans: “Noooo he’s so undeserving, put my team’s above-average pitcher in instead.”
  11. Some teams are slump busters and others kick ‘em while they are down. In the Murph era we are firmly the latter.
  12. Instead of criticism it appears Arnold and Co are going to be receiving more hardware for their trophy cabinets. But the players on the field need to shake off the postseason demons or it will continue to feel like this run of regular season success is incomplete.
  13. Expansion has little to do with fan support. It’s about which cities can put together ownership groups that can afford the $2B fee. Each of the 32 teams will net $125M in free money if they expand to 34. That makes Atlanta and Houston the most obvious targets. NOLA is a bit surprising. Phoenix likely is still on their radar as well but maybe in 5-10 years. I think if the Bucks’ ownership group was interested and could raise capital then Milwaukee could be a contender, but there doesn’t seem to be interest. Kansas City might be better because they have no NBA to compete with.
  14. If this is a list of our worst transactions in the past decade, then we have the best FO in baseball.
  15. Wow there are some serious moron writers out there. Everybody knows what Boston should actually do is make a terrible overpay for Rhys in the offseason.
  16. The funny thing is that from a budget perspective they are fine. They dumped the entire contract and they got a bonus return. That’s better than they would have done if they lost him to FA. From a “goodwill with their fans” perspective this is a complete and unmitigated disaster. The pressure was already high because the Red Sox have been missing the playoffs. They made a generational mistake in trading a future hall of famer (Mookie). Now they botched their relationship with their franchise player in some way (agreed that it’s on management to make that relationship work). On the plus side, at least they have a big budget to go shopping in the offseason?
  17. We have a similar run diff to SF and Philly. And San Francisco is over-performing. If we get upper-80s wins we’ll be in.
  18. They’ve been a bit under the radar lately despite being hot but Miz will draw more national attention for sure. Plus they have gotten back in the wildcard picture and two of the teams above them (Philly/SD) have unimpressive run diffs.
  19. Even the lack of drama around this trade is something to be celebrated. Quickly and effectively dealt with. Helps that Miz had that killer debut though, after the third or fourth inning Civale may as well have been on the bus to Chicago.
