  1. I figured the Badgers were going to have to play a perfect game to win--they did. For those that do not appreciate Bo Ryan, he just dismantled a team full of All-Americans and one of the top 5 greatest coaches of all time--with his bunch of no-name recruits. Duke is clearly an incredible shooting team and if it wasn't for Singler, they lose by at least 10-15. Wisconsin only committed FIVE turnovers--that would be impressive against Edgewood College but they did it against Duke. Coach K's biggest mistake was trying to establish an inside game against our underrated big men. I am used to Duke teams that attempt far more 3-pointers. But credit to Wisconsin for correcting that compared to 2 years ago. It was also refreshing to have Bob Knight calling the game instead of Dick Vitale's unrestrained love for Duke. Knight understands Wisconsin basketball without dropping the same 5 cliche phrases about how Bo does this every year. It's still too early to tell how this season will play out, but they need to beat Marquette. I am sick of losing the family bragging rights.
  2. That Twins call was actually less annoying than the Rollins walk-off double against the Dodgers..."here's the throw to the plate" that never actually occurred. It is about time that they start making changes. Some of those games were literally unwatchable because of the garbage the announcers were spitting out. That being said, we need to recognize that it is extremely difficult to properly announce a 3 hour baseball game that features significant down time. Only a few do it right and it is generally because they are professional entertainers or have decades of baseball knowledge/experience or both.
  3. The good: -Wild Card/realignment -MLB Network -World Baseball Classic -New stadiums/record attendance -Not touching Pete Rose situation -Interleague play The bad: -1994 Strike -Delayed response to steroid situation -Playoff schedule realignment The ugly: -2002 All Star Game Debatable/TBD: -All Star game home field advantage -Revenue sharing -Montreal Expos' move to DC -Instant replay -Current PED use in baseball -Next CBA From this list, I conclude that he had an extremely active tenure as commissioner. However, his real legacy will be decided by the next CBA. If we end up with increased revenue sharing and draft reform, the 2010s will likely be another great decade for MLB. If the status quo continues, the next commissioner could be stuck with extreme competitive imbalance and major attendance/financial problems in cities where futility streaks will start to be measured in decades. Edit: I should add that Bud's major flaw is how he measures the success of baseball. I have no doubt that Bud loves baseball more than anything, but his measure of success is from a businessman's perspective. Just because MLB has high TV ratings, attendance, and revenue does not necessarily mean that game is in a "golden era" or that it is even more popular than ever.
  4. I've been monitoring this one very closely over the last few days. The setup is extremely fascinating, the coldest air will actually be located in Illinois. Therefore, the best chance for accumulating snow will be near the WI/IL border, away from the lake, while areas farther to the north are more likely to see just a mix of rain and snow. The low level thermal profile is also too warm for a widespread snow event, so it is likely that any accumulating snow will only be in a small area, maybe 10-20 miles wide, where the precip is falling heavy enough to mix down cooler air from the upper levels. The best guess on timing is sometime around daybreak Thursday morning. Most areas will see rain starting Wednesday evening changing to a rain/snow mix early Thursday morning. Everything should be gone by noon Thursday. My forecast is for less than 1" except for the small unknown area somewhere south of I-94 that *might* get 3 or 4 inches (before quickly melting due to the warm ground). Definitely a fun/unique but challenging forecast, I am excited to see if it will pan out.
  5. As expected, the Brewers did not have enough pitching for Fielder to finish in the top 3. I hope the people that voted Fielder 8th-10th are Phillies and Marlins fans. Of course, one person left Ryan Howard completely off the ballot, so it goes both ways.
  6. Does anyone know if the scoreboard is going to be replaced after 2010? It isn't County Stadium-bad, but it is definitely in need of an upgrade.
  7. This is an interesting question. I do not think there is an answer. Looking at the teams that make the playoffs, there are lots of different ways to be successful. The 2008 Brewers had poor defense, while defense was a key staple of recent Rockies/Twins teams. The Cardinals have great starting pitching, but not much offense. The Phillies have a power offense but a weak bullpen. Basically, I'm saying that any position can be really weak as long as there are other areas that make up for it. Thus, the "standard" would be replacement level and teams' success depends on how far they are above replacement level, on average.
  8. Hopefully the game lives up to the hype. Will the students be allowed in to buy beer while they are waiting to get in?
  9. Just a warning for anyone traveling around thanksgiving--some of the forecast models are showing rain changing to snow on Wednesday afternoon/evening. Too early to speculate on amounts, but there could be accumulations by Thursday morning--maybe several inches in western/northwest WI.
  10. Why not just pay him market value? Why should we ask for a discount from everyone who signs here? He is going to cost 1/4 of our payroll but he is irreplaceable and the offense will be significantly worse without him.
  11. Great to hear this news. The best time to lock him up is now before he starts getting tempted by the free agent market in a few years. I am not optimistic about their chances (especially if we offer what most people propose on here), but if they are willing to make Prince one of the highest paid players in baseball (which he deserves), then I say go for it.
  12. Did the Brewers really just rename something without selling it to a sponsor?
  13. Sheets would make a nice #5 starter for the Yankees--otherwise Texas or Houston seem likely suitors. The Reds are unlikely to trade in the division--it's worth a phone call though. No way the Braves give up Vasquez, they are looking at a playoff run in 2010. We have to take a look at Mulder--there isn't much risk involved--unless you count the risk of a small market team trying to rebuild a pitching rotation via free agents/trades. I like the idea of 1-year contracts. It worked well for Hoffman and although we gave Gagne lots of money, at least he went away quickly (unlike Suppan). I wish they would drop $90+ million this year. The payroll can be reduced again in 2011 to try and rebuild for the end of Braun's contract.
  14. The Brewers didn't have enough pitching for Fielder to finish #2.
  15. I would do dollars but not years. He would probably take a little less to stay in Milwaukee, but if a big market offers 2 years, he would be wise to take it. Either way, hopefully CC will be back as a coach someday. Edit: Also have to credit Dale Sveum for the turnaround.
  16. I vote Mickey's for anything breakfast but that is right by Camp Randall.
  17. I haven't gotten the flu in at least 10 years (never gotten the flu shot either), but it seems like a smart idea to get the H1N1 vaccine since if you get sick, it knocks you out for several days. I will wait until there are no lines--so by the the virus may have already passed over.
  18. Tom H. now reporting that Lackey is looking for AJ Burnett money (5 years, ~$80 million). Not surprisingly, the Brewers are unlikely to make an offer.
  19. Jeter might be somewhat deserving this year, but there were more deserving candidates and he only won because he is a Yankee.
  20. If you like ivy, they have plenty of it at Miller Park South.
  21. I would rather hire a manager with little/no big league experience who is not an "old school" baseball mind. Ned Yost worked out well for us for a long time. Joe Madden has been great for the Devil Rays. Mike Scioscia has only managed 1 team. Instead of looking at it from an experience standpoint, I see Valentine as someone who has been fired/dropped from 4 managerial jobs.
  22. I fully expect Lackey to sign a large deal with the Yankees. How could you not? Their one flaw was that they only had 3 starters for the Postseason, so adding a 3rd ace would help them out.
  23. Are there even any star pitchers available on the market? It seems to me like 20 teams are going to be fighting over about 5 good but not great starting pitchers.
  24. Harvest is awesome, my fiance loved it. I think our bill for two was about $125 (including tip).
  25. The best pitching we could have gotten for a .230 hitter like Hardy is a middle reliever. I am sick and tired of us signing mediocre starting pitching like Suppan and Looper. If dumping salary now gets us high quality pitching later, then this is a great strategy.
