  1. kratz arrived prior to the start of yesterday's game and caught a bullpen session with brent suter.
  2. i've yet to see a formal announcement selecting erik kratz's contract from the minor leagues, but the brewers would have had to done so to add him to the 25-man roster for tonight's game. kratz has been outrighted to the minor leagues many times before and would have the right to refuse a minor league assignment were he to clear waivers. the 40-man is at capacity.
  3. assuming it is bethancourt, he could've been told last night and caught a plane this morning from memphis to milwaukee (or chicago). if it's kratz, how likely is it that he could get from scranton wilkes-barre to milwaukee in time for tonight's game? the dfa of bandy without an immediate corresponding 40-man roster move is puzzling.
  4. i think it's important to point out that we're all assuming that kratz will have his contract selected (it hasn't been yet). the brewers could select the contract of any other catcher in their minor league system, as there is an open spot on the 40-man and keep kratz at colorado springs.
  5. jett bandy has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or try to outright bandy to the minor leagues. if bandy goes unclaimed, he will be forced to accept the minor league assignment. the roster is officially at 39, as newly acquired erik kratz is not on a major league contract for 2018.
  6. eric sogard spent less than 20 days optioned. if he stays on a major league roster or major league disabled list for the rest of the season, he will not burn his final option. however, he has enough service time to refuse an optional assignment, voiding his contract and becoming a free agent.
  7. kratz was on a minor league deal with the yankees, so his contract will have to be selected by the brewers. kratz is out of minor league options and has been outrighted many times to the minor leagues. if the brewers wish to send kratz to the minors after adding him to the 25-man roster, he reserves the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent.
  8. all these things happened today or will happen tomorrow.
  9. ryan braun activated; ji-man choi optioned.
  10. we now know it's this: today: suter thursday: davies (someone will have be removed from the roster; lopez and woodruff are candidates) friday: guerra saturday: anderson sunday: chacin the brewers don't have an off day until 31 may, which will likely mean 13 consecutive days of playing. but then they're off twice the first full week of june (4 & 7 june).
  11. eight on the major league disabled list, and mauricio dubon and jacob nottingham on the 7-day minor league disabled list. not super ideal for depth at the moment.
  12. rehab start tomorrow for davies with the timber rattlers.
  13. brett phillips could be recalled now with the disabled list move. if not, he is eligible to be recalled on monday after the series in an american league park and use of the dh. i'm predicting ji-man choi recalled tomorrow, and optioned back after sunday's series finale, with phillips taking his place.
  14. while it's unfortunate for vogt and perhaps the brewers as well that his season is definitely over (and perhaps his career also), it's important for us to recognize as fans the relatively low risk they take when signing players to non-guaranteed deals. vogt could have been cut in spring training, and the brewers would've been on the hook for only a fraction of his salary (as they did with yovani gallardo). of course, the brewers were expecting vogt to only be out for a few weeks, so they guaranteed his deal. but had they known what course his injury would take, he could've been released.
  15. nick franklin will come off the 40-man before eric sogard does.
  16. aaron wilkerson made his first appearance of the 2018 season yesterday and threw 5.2 innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts and no walks. one would assume that the brewers would not be counting on marcos diplan to make the jump from high-a ball to the bigs for an emergency start. and all four appearances for the recently optioned alec asher have been starts with the sky sox. things could be looking a lot bleaker were wilkerson still on the disabled list.
  17. with today's move swapping alec asher for jorge lopez (technically, lopez for chase anderson on the dl, because lopez was optioned just a few days ago), the brewers are now left with only one optioned reliever that has already met the 10-day minimum stay: adrian houser. unless corresponding with another player's move to the disabled list, asher and jacob barnes both have to stay optioned for 10 days. the brewers relievers on the 40-man and number of remaining options: matt albers (0) alec asher (1; must stay optioned for 10 days) jacob barnes (2; must stay optioned for 10 days) josh hader (2) adrian houser (1; has already met 10-day minimum stay and could be recalled at any point) dan jennings (0) jeremy jeffress (0) corey knebel (1) boone logan (0) jorge lopez (1) taylor williams (2)
  18. and, that's what happened today. fortunate for the brewers and their roster flexibility.
  19. jacob barnes optioned. if he stays down more than 20 days, he will burn his second option. alec asher has his contract selected. he has burned his final option already in 2018, but can be optioned and recalled througout the remainder of the 2018 season. if the brewers attempt to outright him again to the minor leagues, he has the right to refuse the assignment and become a free agent. wade miley is transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open up a spot for asher. the 40-man remains at capacity.
  20. what's up with paolo espino? the brewers announced more than a week ago that they had signed him.
  21. today: jhoulys chacin friday: brandon woodruff saturday: chase anderson sunday: brent suter (tentatively) monday: junior guerra tuesday: chacin wednesday: woodruff thursday: off all will be on five days' rest or longer (assuming suter doesn't pitch in relief). they're okay for the moment without davies. again, the increased number of off days over the 162-game schedule is really allowing the brewers to get away with a four-man rotation from time to time. with minor injuries, this is huge.
  22. wade miley may be out 6 - 8 weeks. this prognosis may give the brewers the ability to transfer him to the 60-day disabled list to open up a roster spot (and miley would probably not have much of a case to appeal). miley can start a minor league rehab assignment while on the 60-day disabled list. also, nick franklin may be out for at least two weeks, which means he'll be (in the eyes of many) wasting a 40-man roster spot beyond the 10 days that a disabled list affords.
  23. boone logan activated, jorge lopez optioned.
  24. boone logan could make his brewers debut as soon as tonight. he's been activated from the disabled list.
  25. davies threw a bullpen session yesterday. no word yet if he's not recovered from his injury or not.
