  1. in what i consider a sensible move, the brewers yesterday picked up the $3.75 million dollar option on torres. the brewers would retain the rights to torres if he decided to play next season. Brewers pick up retired Torres' option (edit: link repair --1992)
  2. if memory serves correctly, the 40-man roster was full on the last day of the regular season. i count only 40 players here: http://milwaukee.brewers....roster_40man.jsp?c_id=mil note that roster above includes the reinstated chris capuano. was someone else bumped, or was the roster only at 39 on the last day of the regular season?
  3. has chris capuano been reinstated from the 60-day disabled list? if so, was someone else removed from the roster?
  4. maybe the brewers had plans to outright palmisano in the offseason and felt the likelihood of him not being claimed was less now (when most teams have their 40-man rosters full) than in the offseason.
  5. if branyan's injury is so severe, why risk losing palmisano to get lamb? why didn't the brewers transfer branyan to the 60-day disabled list? unless the brewers are counting on branyan in october . . .
  6. if this is the case, why did the brewers wait until 9/1 to dfa gardner and transfer capuano to the 60-day? had they done so on 8/31, and purchased the contracts of gamel and salome on 8/31 (simply adding them to the 40-man ala joe dillon last year) and then calling them up a day later, would not those two players be eligible for postseason play? the way things stand right now, only 38 of the 40 players on the 40-man roster on 8/31 are available right now. not the best preparation for the postseason in my opinion.
  7. the brewers' 40-man roster is back to full after the team transferred chris capuano to the 60-day disabled list and designated richie gardner for assignment.
  8. kremblas didn't mention jay gibbons . . . looks like i wasted all that money on that primate costume . . .
  9. i'd add brad nelson for sure. 1. it's a chance to showcase a little of his talent to other teams for offseason trade considerations. 2. he's been on the 40-man roster twice. when the brewers outrighted him the first time, he could've elected free agency. yet he chose to remain with the organization that drafted him. he ended up performing pretty well last year at triple-a and again pretty well this year. i brought up mike rivera's similar situation at the end of spring training. he stuck with the organization after being outrighted (at least once, maybe twice?), and the brewers ultimately rewarded him by giving him a roster spot and the chance to occasionally play.
  10. the 40-man roster is currently full. five of those six players are not currently on the 40-man roster. a roster spot could be opened up by transferring chris capuano to the 60-day disabled list, but that spot seems to be held for jay gibbons. of course, the brewers could have kept a roster spot open by recalling tony gwynn, jr. instead of purchasing the contract of laynce nix . . . yes . . . there is a reason you're not a gm.
  11. what irritates me is that by placing branyan on the disabled list and calling up an outfielder, the brewers had the opportunity to have tony gwynn, jr. (or another speedy outfielder) on their roster on 31 august and therefore, could include said speedster on their postseason roster (as well as branyan if they so desire--provided he's activated after 1 september). now, if a speedster is called up on or after 1 september, he's not eligible for postseason play. for my 25th man in the postseason, i'd much rather have tony gwynn, jr. or even mel stocker over laynce nix.
  12. if i just heard bob uecker correctly, the brewers have a 21-game doubles streak. can anyone confirm?
  13. i hope they broke the news to him in spanish.
  14. i'm waiting for the hordes to claim the brewers play better in their retro ball & glove/mb caps (or vice versa). evidently, the barley on the current cap gives the brewers home run power, so i'm all for the current uniform.
  15. i disagree. i was there on memorial day to watch the brewers and walked away from nationals park unimpressed. it lacked charm.
  16. i think the highest-paid person in the nationals organization this year is the team doctor.
  17. i recall bob uecker calling a play and referring to the player as b.j. surhoff, when it actually was jenkins (well into his tenure with the brewers).
  18. oh well. at least the home run streak and the winning streak continue.
  19. nothing would please me more than the opportunity to add a "suppan" tag to this thread.
  20. the brewers' starting pitchers have a 6-game hitting streak. the streak is even more amazing when you realise that ben sheets is part of it. 12 july: mcclung 1-2 13 july: sabathia 1-3, hr (solo) 18 july: sabathia: 1-4, double, run 19 july: sheets: 1-2, double, rbi 20 july: parra: 1-4, rbi 21 july: mcclung: 1-2, run might this streak be a club record? i'm hard pressed to recall a time when brewers got such production from their starting pitching staff.
  21. if you're optioned, recalled or purchased, you are part of or become part of the 40-man roster. if you're designated for assignment, the team has 10 days to trade, release or outright you to the minors. any of those decisions remove the player from the 40-man roster. when you are outrighted, you are removed from the 40-man roster but remain in the organization (usually at triple-a level). it should be noted that no either team opted to claim randy choate on waivers when the brewers tried to outright him.
  22. i just hope coughin' doesn't lead to coffin.
  23. any idea which outlets are carrying the 6:00 pm news conference?
  24. a good friend is a big expos/nationals fan. we've been at odds over recent years on their approach and milwaukee's approach to running a spring training camp. the nationals' idea in recent years is to invite as many players as possible to major league camp and much like a crap shoot, see what sticks. methinks they had as many as 72 players in big-league camp this year. compare that to the brewers, who only had 7 or 8 players beyond their 40-man roster. i've argued that the nationals' woes can be attributed to their lack of commitment to a core group of players from the onset . . . conversely, ned yost has been adamant (if not stubborn) about adhering to his own players (rickie weeks being the most glaring example). what do you think?
