  1. Not really. He'll still be eligible for the playoffs (if they don't send him down in the next 2 days) and I would think that they would keep him over Wilson. Whether he would actually play in the playoffs is another matter.
  2. I've said this in other threads but will repeat again. In the case of an injury, the replacement player can be anyone that was in the organization as of 8/31. They didn't need to be on the 40 man at that time but must be added to it before being used as a replacement.
  3. With Green, there's no evidence either way that he's going to be a bust or he's going to be starter-worthy. All that you can do is start him a few times and get him pinch hit at bats and see how he does. After seeing what Gamel has done with the Brewers, I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable inserting him in the line-up over McGehee, and he's been pretty solid in AAA as well. Do people really think that we can judge Gamel based on his career 194 PAs over basically 3 years? Most of those came in 09 when he was 23 and he OPSed .760 with inconsistent playing time. He had 17 PAs last year and 27 this year. In other threads people are saying they don't feel comfortable with Gamel at 1B next year because he "hasn't done anything" at the MLB level. The guy has dominated in the minors and would probably have been a starter on a lot of teams for the past couple of years. He just hasn't gotten the chance here and he hasn't had any consistent playing time in his very little time up here.

  5. In defense of Morgan's bunt, he beats those out fairly often. Does anybody actually know how often he does? Not sure but he shows bunt just about every at-bat.
  6. So I guess you're trying to argue the hypothetical situation where the Phillies or Atlanta claims Berkman off waivers and the Brewers should/shouldn't move to pick him up? I could see Atlanta trying it, since they could use a RF, but there's no way the Phillies try. Pence and Ibanez aren't going to sit the bench, and Howard is staying at 1B. I know this situation is unlikely, but I'm still not sure the Brewers would sign a player for the sole purpose of another team not having him. $1.3 mill (+ waiver fee/prospects) is still a lot for a bench player, even if his sole purpose is for him to not play for the Braves. I don't think a team having Berkman is the be-all end-all for competing against the Brewers. We've beaten Berkman many, many times in his career, and I don't think they're all that worried about him playing for another team. I think he meant blocking in terms of putting in a claim so that other teams can't. We wouldn't need to actually receive him to block other teams, just putting in the claim accomplishes that.
  7. I absolutely love that idea. I hate the MVP chant. Not really sure why, it just bothers me.
  8. Casey's slash stats since the All Star break: .277/.327/.445. That's a near perfect match for his career numbers. So you can make the argument he had a bad half season but is back to being the same hitter he was the previous two seasons. He'll get a nice raise in arbitration. Also, getting back up to his career numbers should make him a tradeable player over the winter. But that's basically only a month and a half worth of stats compared to 3 months at the beginning. And I know you can't just take out certain games but those numbers are inflated by his 3 HR game. Not looking strictly at numbers, his approach looks the same to me as it has all year. So IMO, he's on the way down and won't ever be the same player he was the past couple seasons (which some may suggest were the outlier seasons, not this year).

  10. You are kind of missing something. If the Brewers had no one on the DL/suspended/etc. and no one got hurt in September, then yes their roster on 9/1 would be the playoff roster. However, since they will (or should) still have 2 guys on the DL, they can CHOOSE from the 25 man as of 9/1 plus the 2 DL guys. So they would have a list of 27 players to choose from and likely at least one pitcher will be replaced by one of the DL guys. The 8/31 deadline just sets the list of who is eligible and then each team chooses 25 from that list prior to each playoff series. As for the injuries in September, the replacement player must be added to the 40 man but doesn't have to be on it when the injury occurs. In other words, it can be anyone in the organization. They would just have to be added to the 40 man to play. And as for the position player for position player/pitcher for pitcher thing, I knew that was the case a few years ago but I thought I read that they have abandoned that rule. But I'm not positive. If anyone has any links or anything to clarify, please share.
  11. I don't think many (or even any) people are saying they want McGehee cut and Green just handed the starting role. We just want to see Green up (wish finally granted) and get a few starts to see what he's got. Then next spring training have an open competition and if Green doesn't completely flop, have them platoon. Like I said, I was a big McGehee fan the past couple of years but looking at his minor league numbers/body-type/etc., he was bound to come back to earth.
  12. Yeah as much as I want him to be, at this point I don't see it happening. Gomez and Weeks still have to come back. I could see maybe another pitcher being left off the playoff roster but then it would be down to Wilson/Green and since it took this long to get him up, they probably prefer Wilson at this point. However, if Green performs better than Wilson over this next month, then he could lock up a spot. Either way, it's not a forgone conclusion that he will be on the playoff roster. But this is definitely a start in the right direction.
  13. So he's had 3 average months and 2 bad months? You can't just ignore 2 months of data and say other than that, he's been fine. I was a big McGehee fan when we first signed him. I looked at his minor league numbers and while they weren't amazing, I thought he could be a valuable addition. And he was for the last two years but this year not so much. He could improve on this year's numbers next year but I think he will be closer to this year than the past 2. I also think that Green would post better numbers (because of age, stats in the minors, makeup, etc.). I don't want to see McGehee cut but I would like to see some sort of platoon next year. As to WTP, I don't think I said that I thought Gamel would replace Fielder's production. I was just saying that RBI was a bad stat to use to support your argument. I think RockCo makes a good point in Gamel won't touch Prince's OBP. However, WTP mentioned that Gamel wasn't even a blip on the Top 100 prospects. Well that's because he's not really considered a prospect anymore because he's had some time in the majors. A couple of years ago he was pretty highly regarded. Obviously things change over a few years (i.e. Brandon Wood) but I still think he will be a valuable contributor. My main point is basically that I don't think losing Prince will make them go from a division winner to fringe playoff team. Pitching is key and we will still have it. While Gamel won't put up Prince's numbers, I think he will more than hold his own. I could see .280/.350/.450 with 20 HR/85 RBI (depending where he hits in the order).
  14. Yes I am absolutely excluding defense because I can't speak to it because I have never seen Gamel/Gindl v. Fielder/Hart. I can't make that comparison fairly. As for HR and RBI, to me HR is a demonstration of production and your ability to put a run on the board. RBI, while dependent on people being on base, also demonstrates your ability to produce, whether it be via a hit or out, in getting those runners in. Please use a different stat to prove me wrong that Gamel/Gindl can even approach half of Fielder/Hart's production? I would love for you to prove me wrong because I think that my current viewpoint makes the Brewers worse and I am all for any stat that makes the Brewers look better minus Fielder/Hart. I agree with everything Baldkin said. And I used RBI in my previous statement to show that Gamel could come close to Fielder's production (depending on which year you choose). If you put Gamel at cleanup, he should drive in close to 100 runs just because of the sheer volume of opportunities. So I still think RBI is a bad stat to use for your argument.
  15. Not saying I agree with putting 3 rookies in the lineup but using HR/RBI to strengthen your argument doesn't really work. RBI are affected by whether guys are on base in front of you, how many times that occurs, etc. If Gamel were hitting 4th this entire year (and assuming Prince wasn't there to drive in all those runs), I bet he would've finished around 100. Most cleanup guys should finish with at least 85 RBI just because of the number of opportunities. I'm not saying Gamel will hit clean-up next year or that I want him to but I just think RBI is a bad argument to use. And I also think you are ignoring any improvements that Gamel/Gindl would contribute to on defense.
  16. It would be realistic for next year and maybe the year after but the problem would be what to do for the 4+ years after Wolf's contract would be up. I would have no problem paying Prince for the next 2 years but once the Yo/Weeks/Braun contracts start to escalate (and adding in Greinke/Marcum resignings) there would just be too much money tied up. I just don't think it's prudent to put 20+ mil into one player for multiple years (especially a 1st baseman).
  17. I could see still calling Tampa the DRays but after 15 years, I think it's time to acknowledge at least the "Anaheim" part of the Angels. I personally don't say Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim cuz that's just stupid so I just say "Anaheim" or Angels. It will take awhile to get used to Miami Marlins though.
  18. If you are talking about the 2001 or 2002 Brewers rotation sure but not next years or any of the years following after that. Estrada is a 6th starter at best. I would rather give someone else the chance to be in the rotation before I even think about Estrada. Estrada is nice as an emergency starter or a long man in the bullpen but once teams face him more than once they will catch on and he will not have the same success as he is having now. He would be at a 5+ ERA easily if he were a starter for a full year close to what Suppan was. I'm not saying I want to give him a chance in the rotation but I'm not buying that he's a 6th at best. The guy has been pretty solid this year with a 4.14 ERA (though small sample of ~83 innings). He also put up a 3.09, 3.63, and 3.15 ERA in the minors the past 3 years. Obviously he's not a top-of-the-line starter but to say he's a 6th starter at best is selling him short IMO.
  19. They haven't been the California Angels since 1996. I'm surprised people still make this flub (unless you were being facetious).
  20. This is starting to turn into just a Fielder thread but I wouldn't even want Prince at that price. I don't want him for anything at $20 mil or over. I think even $18 mil is pushing it. Sure the guy is amazing on offense. But he plays at arguably the easiest position to replace while providing below-average defense. Like others have said, we've tried to build around offense for seemingly the past 20 years. Pitching is the key so I would rather use that money to lock up Greinke and Marcum. So even if Prince would take a "discount" of $20 mil, I wouldn't want to do it.
