  1. Latin Cappy: "I got sent to the minors for this guy?"
  2. I find simply winning games far more entertaining than anything else.
  3. Really, that might work in little league but...
  4. My guess: Weeks Hardy Prince Hall Estrada Mench Hart Graffy Cappy
  5. I think it's very interesting. One of those guys are bound to stick somewhere. Furthermore, it wouldn't surprise me to see the Crew give up a bit more talent in the next couple years. Keep it up.
  6. Well. if I can make $50 for waiting 8 months, I'm not sure why I shouldn't. I'm a patient man. EDIT: The wife and I decided not to spend the money right now. I'd be willing to sell it for $300 (cost me $263 with tax) and I'm sure we can make an arrangement to avoid shipping if you live in the Fox valley area or Milwaukee. I'll be in Milwaukee (I live in Green Bay) for opening day, so I could drop it off then. If anyone is interested, just PM me, please.
  7. So, I stumbled on a wii and bought it for no particular reason. The wife and I weren't planing on getting one until Christmas, so I'm not sure what to do with this one. What is a wii actually worth on the open market these days? I noticed a few going for around $325 on Ebay, plus $30 shipping. Does that sound about right? What to do.... what to do...
  8. Any player, in any sport it seems, that enters a contract year typically has a huge year. Most baseball players sign their first huge contract after their arbitration years are up. They are usually around 28 during their contract year... peak years for a player's performance. Are we supposed to be surprised when they have their best season at age 28? The contract year phenomena is not as nearly pronounced as some suggest anyway. You could take 4 soon-to-be free agents, 3 will do nothing special, 1 will have a great year and people will say, "See, contract year!"
  9. Also, WPA can be negative anyway. Of course, a mediocre player constantly placed in a position to win games will probably have a nice WPA.
  10. Prior is only signed through 2007 and may need the whole season to regain his velocity back, if ever does, that is.
  11. He loves to perform well during contract years, that's no secret. Yes, because he's has so many of them.
  12. most worth piece of crap on the team Kevin Mench, there is no need for him with Gross and Gwynn Jr. I'm sure Gwynn could crush Mench's numbers this year.
  13. Well, I wasn't considering knuckleballers. They are freaks and don't deserve to be studied. And I knew better than to just assume a league average run value for balls in play, since guys who can't strike people out must have some other angle working for them. I was just going to find Silva's average run value of his balls in play, use his career BABIP and find out if he'd be better off allowing no Ks or BBs. Purely theoretical of course (a pitcher who never walks or Ks a guy would really have to work hard to get a batter to make contact) but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
  14. 147 Ks, 44 BB in roughly 391 innings. What I was getting at was a mythical pitcher than never recorded a single strikeout or gave up a single walk. Silva is about as close as you'll find and he has managed to be about league average. What I'm not sure about is whether Silva would have been better off getting no Ks or BBs. Is there somewhere where I can see how mnay singles, doubles, etc... he's given up over his career?
  15. So did Davis's K rate as well -- If you are going to say that his increased K rate is a good thing -- which is OK with me -- then you need to look at the other things that bumped as well. K rates for a pitcher are more reproducible. There are enough of them that a change in K rate from year to year can mean something. With so few HRs in a year, they bounce around a lot. Not saying it means nothing but it's weak statistical evidence.
  16. When Davis's K rate went up from 2004 to 2005 -- he also got hit much harder. He gave up almost 2x as many HRs. Pitcher HR rates jump all over the place from year to year, so it's very difficult to extract much from them.
  17. I heard them talking about the Nationals on ESPN radio last week and they were throwing out numbers like 32-130. That's just silly. A team of AAA vets would win more games.
  18. I swear, people must think a BB is worse than a base hit on a ball in play. It's mostly because a base on balls is the opposite of entertaining. A pitcher who never walked anyone and never struck out anyone would probably not be a good pitcher (I'll look into it a bit and see if my gut feeling can be supprted by numbers). On average, groundball pitchers do not hold an automatic advantage over flyball pitchers anyway. Flyballs are converted into outs more often than groundballs but have a higher run value than a groundball. It really comes down to the individual pitcher and his specific skill set.
  19. I'm confident that, when the games start to actually count, walks are not going to be an issue.
  20. OK, so the Bwaz and I bet a case of beer about the price of the PS3. He was convinced it would see a price drop by the Spring. I didn't think so. Well, he lost and as a man of his word, he sent me a check in the mail with the stipulation that I use it to buy some Lakefront E.S.B. 10 beers in tonight and I can say with certainty that it was a fine choice. Furthermore, I finally decided to watch the FSN Brewer season preview show and I am so hyped. Counsell said something about it being the Brewers time and it was hard not to agree. Seeing Davey Nelson as part of the crew makes me very happy. He was always great miked up and just seems like a nice guy. Crap. I'm drunk.
  21. I completely forgot Willy Taveras wasn't with the Astros anymore. Thank goodness he isn't in the division anymore. And I wish he and Pierre were still in the NL Central.
  22. do you ever watch any of the great shows on HBO? All of Six Feet under, most of the Sopranos and Oz. I was referring more to network TV. HBO is great.
  23. I think they want the office to be the next friends. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'm not a big TV show guy but for awhile there, I was loving Lost, Office and Earl. Now, Lost is unwatchable garbage, Earl's format has gotten a bit stale and The Office, while still good, is a bit sketchy at times. O well, baseball starts soon!
  24. He'd be owed about another $3 mil, so the salaries lineup pretty good: LINK Still, this is just blind speculation, isn't it?
  25. Missing the cutoff man is a lot less important than turning an out into a double.
