  1. Witrado in Friday's paper: "Ill-timed walks, poorly placed pitches rapped for crippling hits, fundamental mistakes children are scolded for making and the all-too-familiar two-out rallies by the opposition were some of the pigments used to paint an ugly picture over the past three games." Could a high school English teacher read that without wincing?
  2. Anyone who thinks that the Brewers are a terrible team need to watch teams like Pirates more. These guys are just consistently awful.
  3. So the day/night split is the new random split we are obsessing over? I'm glad that Macha is trying to figure out how to fix a coin flip.
  4. Signing almost any reliever to a 3 year deal is silly. Most pitcher are relievers simply because they aren't good enough to start. Riskie was never anything special.

  6. I don't really see the value of figuring out how valuable a position is in comparison to it being unmanned. We want to know where defensive talent can be leveraged the best, no? The way I see it, as long as SS and C are at the top and LF, RF and 1B are at the bottom, the list isn't wrong. 1B is where you put the fat old, and/or bad defenders at. There's good reason for it.
  7. Walking the winning runner on is terrible strategy, no matter who it is. I don't care how it turns out. The fact that Bill is convinced that it is the right choice is evidence of it's idiocy.
  8. A like Sheets (when he's not hurt) throws his fastball with more backspin and less side spin than most. The result is a fastball that has a lot more "rise" than most fastballs. It is a very effective pitch and certainly has "movement", despite it's lack of a tail. Here's a link to Parra's P/X data for the whole season: http://pitchfx.texasleagu...%2F2010&to=8%2F16%2F2010 Shows him throwing a two seam fastball 7.5% of the time but remember, pitch classifications are somewhat subjective.
  9. I thought a two seamer has more horizontal movement (toward the pitcher hand) and less vertical movement than a 4 seamer. About the same overall movement, though. As with anything, I'm sure in varies a lot by pitcher.

  11. Yeah, you should stick to baseball..http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/multimedia/photo_gallery/0908/mlb.remember.when.baseball.uniforms/images/bucky-dent-white-sox-shorts.jpg
  12. That's about 8:20 miles over 26 miles. I averaged that over my 3.1 miles http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Trenni finished 1st in her division (females 30-34 years old). My wife ran in that same division and finished 6th. Guess she has 363 days left to train up and beat Trenni next year!
  13. I ran the Hank Aaron State Trail 5K on Saturday and was perusing the names of the hundreds of people that beat me. I was a little surprised to see Trenni Kusnierek's name. She finished 12th overall for females at 21:22: http://onlineraceresults.com/race/view_race.php#racetop Anyone else run in this? How did you do? I ran a grand total of 1 mile to prepare for this race, so my 26:22 was just fine by me!
  14. All I was thinking was, Counsell BETTER have been running hard! He scared the crap out of me.
  15. How can you have a base-state split for ERA? Meaning, he gives up more earned runs when men are on base? Here is his career splits: http://www.baseball-refer...01&year=Career&t=p#bases All his other career splits: http://www.baseball-refer...01&year=Career&t=p#bases Every starter does worse as the game goes on. We'd have to compare Parra to a league average starter.
  16. The median tenure for a ML manager is about 3 years. Apparently, the vast majority of managers are terrible at their job. Apparently, teams should be looking at a different pool of candidates?
  17. It's not bad luck. Yo pitched well but was over 100 pitches and you had 2 lefties to start the inning. No brainer for a lefty but not only did Macha not bring a lefty in, he didn't even have one warmed up. Meanwhile, Loe has been nothing special in his short major league career but because he has a nice ERA in a handful of innings this year, he get's sent in there with the game in the line.
  18. I don't think you are appreciating how weak evidence is when it's based on the the results of 122 IP. I think the fact that there was little or no interest in him at the trade line is strong evidence that other teams understand that.
  19. We are talking about the luck of the coin flip, which evens out over the long haul. A batter has a certain percent chance of getting a hit against a particular pitcher. Unless you think that it's 0% or 100%, you've implicitly accepted the luck aspect in baseball.
  20. It's not the blog, it's in the damn paper. I want to be able to pick up the sports section of my city's newspaper and be informed and entertained by articles about my favorite sports team. It painful to have to read the ramblings of someone who can't write and doesn't even like the team he has to cover. Maybe you find his writing intelligent and thoughtful. Maybe you don't even read the newspaper.
  21. Reading Witrado's articles are just painful. It reminds me of proofreading an AP English paper written by a 17 year old. You can just tell when someone is trying to write above their own abilities. Here's one of those great Witrado sentences from today's game writeup: "For the most part they crumpled whenever a scoring chance presented itself against the Houston Astros to start this seven game homestand, and it appeared that more inconsistency, the word of the season, would render them losers." That is just embarrassingly bad, in my opinion. I wouldn't let that be handed into a high school teacher but it's apparently good enough to get published in the Journal?
