  1. Well, after 4 outs with no balls out of the infield, McGehee crushes a ball and it dies in the outfield. Did Brian Anderson really just compare Cameron to Gwynn defensively? Yikes. We don't have very good mojo going right now.
  2. A quick and clean inning for Villa. 14 pitches, 10 strikes. Nice start. Hopefully we can get to Cy Correia.
  3. We were 0-2 with my Human Rain Delay icon, so back to exasperated Corey Hart, which is 2-0 on the year. I'll take any mojo or coincidence we can get at this point, lol.
  4. Lets go Villa. Please give us a solid 5 innings today, it would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Silver lining, we didn't give up 5 or more runs. 3 runs in 5 2/3 is about the best you'll get out of Burns, at least he kept us in the game.
  6. Lets get a comeback going here boys. It is time for a Cambomb.
  7. Hooray Human Rain Delay! I just returned from a wedding, but by the time I get ready to watch the end of the game, Vargas' inning will probably just be ending. lol
  8. I'm going to guess it was Scott Kazmir. The Rays had interest in Victor Martinez, but there was some question as to whether they would need to clear salary in order to do it. I posted an article in the Martinez thread that at first had ESPN saying the Rays would need to move salary, later they updated it to the Rays saying they wouldn't need to. Based on Kazmir's expected salaries (2009: $6M, 2010: $8M, 2011: $12M, 2012: $13.5M club option [$2.5M buyout] plus a $0.8M bonus if traded [for first trade only]), Mark A. would have probably wanted to approve that. Kazmir last started on Tuesday so his normal day would be Sunday, although he is starting on Monday since the Rays had a day off on Thursday. That would have been a good fit for the Brewers, who could have slid Villanueva/Dillard to Saturday. Once the Indians decided they were going to take what Boston offered Tampa probably no longer felt compelled to move Kazmir and the Brewers moved on to Peavy.
  9. I am not sure what is more frustrating, being owned by scrappy former Pirates, or being owned by former Brewers. At least we have the big bats in the 9th, but giving up 9 runs to the Padres is pretty frustrating in itself.
  10. Including tonight, we've given up 5 or more runs in 9 of our last 12 games. You just can't consistently win ballgames like that. For fun, two of those three games we didn't give up 5 runs were Yo starts. Go figure.
  11. Maybe we should bat Looper 7th. He obviously knows how to at least make contact. lol
  12. Considering the state of our pitching this weekend (likely Burns and Villanueva), we could really use a good 7 innings from Looper tonight to save some arms. If the ball gets to Trevor I'd hope it is with a comfy lead as I'm sure there may be some nerves or extra emotion flowing. If we get down I hope they do what they did Monday and just make Swindle eat those innings as he is likely the odd man out when Houdini arrives.
  13. Dillard isn't starting because of what Macha forsees as his secondary pitches not translating to the major leagues as a starter. I think Dillard deserves a shot before Burns gets another, but I don't think Macha is inclined to make that happen anytime soon.
  14. Welcome back to the Human Rain Delay. Most likely he will slide into Chris Smith's role of soaking up useless innings, and Chris Smith will slide into McClung's role of soaking up semi-useless innings. It isn't an ideal deal, but at this point he is a warm body and we didn't give up much to get him. I am still hopeful if we play well over the next few weeks when more teams realize they are out of the race maybe we can swing a waiver wire deal.
  15. Red Sox attempting to work out deal for Martinez, Rays also interested ESPN is reporting the Red Sox are trying to work a three-way deal to get Martinez and would be sending the Indians Clay Buchholz. The third team would mostly be there to throw in prospects and receive prospects. The Sox also want to trade LaRoche either in that deal, or an unrelated deal. And while this is kind of merging two transaction rumors, the Rays are reportedly interested in Martinez as well, but they'd have to shed salary (the ESPN article speculates Kazmir) in order to do it. It has been said the Brewers are not a good match for Cleveland, but might they match up with Tampa Bay to jump in on Kazmir as the third team in that deal?
  16. Washburn is having a career year, no doubt about it. Overall for his career he is a 4.00 ERA pitcher in the American league, which isn't bad. That said, based on the fact he is having a career year you'd expect his numbers to at some point trend back towards the mean. Secondly, he will be 35 in a few weeks, so it isn't as if he's a spring chicken. Third, if he were truly that much of a difference maker as he is being claimed to be, don't you think someone, anyone, other than the Brewers would be seriously talking about him? It has been said the Yankees are interested, but there is no buzz. The Phillies acquired Lee so their interest is probably moot. The real difference makers in this market are either injured, already acquired, or probably won't be traded. We were spoiled last year with the Sabathia trade and even the year before with Linebrink because finally it was us landing the big fish in the sea. We can't keep throwing our best bait in the lake when we know the majority of what is out there is minnows.
  17. Braves grant Jeff Bennett his release Bennett had an okay ERA but a pretty high WHIP and poor BB/SO ratio this year. I will always remember him as a flat-brim wearing Rule 5'er who pitched when we were up 10 or down 10 in 2004. It makes one wonder what made him want his release so badly. Anyone interested in taking a shot on bringing him back?
  18. Just for fun I looked at the teams who most would agree are completely out of the playoff race to evaluate their pitching: Toronto, Baltimore, Kansas City, Cleveland, Oakland, Washington, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Arizona, and San Diego. You say 10 teams, there has to be someone there, right? Well, Toronto is asking the earth, moon, and a couple of constellations for Halladay. Baltimore doesn't have much worth wanting on the pitching side, and if they do it is young guys they won't part with. KC would make an okay partner, but they're in the same boat. Cleveland sold their guy already. Oakland is in the same situation as Baltimore. We just saw Washington's staff, it isn't pretty. Pittsburgh sold everything but the racing pierogi. Cincinnati has some guys, but I'm sure they'll ask a lot. We know Arizona is asking too much for Davis, and Peavy is on the shelf for San Diego. I honestly don't see much there. When mid-August comes and some of the teams clinging to their hopes (Seattle, Atlanta, etc.) give up hope, if we're still in it that is probably the best time to make a move.
  19. Melvin taking heat for the poor pitching staff he assembled is valid, but combining the way we've been playing and the fact in this market for pitching it seems like trying to trade for someone who would even be league average or a little worse would be like trying to get blood from a rock, it really isn't a good fit right now. I'd rather not trade someone who can be valuable to this team in the future for a 4.75-5.00 ERA pitcher who honestly will be no better than what a healthy Dave Bush or even Suppan could potentially give us. Trust me, I'd love to see them make a trade and I honestly hope they do, but with Peavy and Bedard down, Lee traded, and the Blue Jays essentially asking for the entire Nashville Sounds roster plus Prince Fielder for Halladay, the options are truly limited. I would not be surprised to see Doug make a small move, maybe a reliever or a junkballer for a little bit of nothing, but I think he'll stand pat for the most part until maybe Bedard comes off the DL or a few more teams dreaming hit the August skids and at that point maybe he'll think about making an August deal if we're playing better.
  20. If they decided to trade for Correia they could opt to start Villanueva Saturday on three days rest knowing the most they'll get out of him is 3-4 innings anyway, ultimately backing him up with Dillard et. al.
  21. I definitely wish Hall the best. I believe he is a better player than the one we have seen the past year and a half, so I hope by going down to Triple A he can rekindle that flame which made many of us exclaim Bill Hall wins ballgames and ask the question can Bill Hall pitch?
  22. With all of the bashing Melvin has gotten for the poor pitching staff, I must say Coffey has been a great scrap heap find for Melvin. We may not have made the playoffs last year without some of his late season contributions considering how ragged our bullpen was then, and this year he has been very good as well.
  23. I feel like I have been saying this for days, but I am tired of seeing former Pirates own us. Thankfully, the Padres have no former Pirates to antagonize us. Bad news, they hav Eckstein, three former Brewers and Joe Thatcher. lol
  24. Even if JJ wasn't wearing his cement shoes, that is still an easy double play. Nice to get the run, but disappointing for the two outs. Lets keep them off the board this next half inning. Please?
  25. Let us try this avatar switching thing again. Time to bring back exasperated Corey Hart in an attempt to change mojo! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I hope Manny and Mike get on the same page and have a good game tonight. It seems in the two Rivera starts Manny was very aggressive and pounded the zone, as to where when Kendall caught him last time he either nibbled or grooved one right in the happy zone for the hitter.
