  1. So you're saying we thought the Crew were going to distance themselves from the pack while playing the Cubs? Even if we'd won 3 of 4, we'd still be sitting 3 games up in the wild card, right where we were when the series started. Disappointing to be only tied for the wild card lead? Sure. But we're in a lot better position than we were two months ago. We had the best record in the league for the last month and a half (can't remember the exact date) but streaks are only streaks until they are stopped. Why suddenly is Ned responsible for going 1-6 but not for winning all those games the previous 7 weeks? I'm not debating that the wild card picture hasn't changed, it has.
  2. As for the we have the second best record/ there is still alot of baseball to play crowd---open your eyes and look at the standings! The NL East has caught up. The second place Mets are 8 games over and the Marlins are 7 games over. The Crew is 11 games over. One week ago all the talk was about the stranglehold we were going to have on the wildcard. My eyes are open, thank you. I'm not sure how many people thought a 3 game lead in July was a stranglehold; one need look no further back than last season to realize we had absolutely nothing wrapped up. On the other side of the coin, going 1-6 at home doesn't mean that we're out of it either. Ride the roller coaster and see what happens. As they say, this is why they play the games. Hopefully the Brewers' self-loathing keeps them working hard at their approach to hitting especially.
  3. Your analogy would work, Valpo, if the teacher was attempting to deny students graduation from high school or if the Brewers were somehow not trying to compete in this series. As for the OP, I have no blame to hoist upon Yost. I've been critical of him but when you get outscored as much as the Brewers did this week, it's hard to blame the manager for not manufacturing/mojoing/wishing the Brewers to victory. We're still well above .500. We've finally obtained the respectable road record that everyone bashed Yost for not producing last season but got swept just as Tony LaRussa's squad did last week in a playoff-type series. Hard to blame Melvin when he's made tons of moves to try and improve the club. It was always a lottery ticket to expect these young players to bust out enough to make us the best team in the league. As luck would have it, we're only the second best at present, with Hardy putting up huge numbers and Braun playing like a hall of famer. The Cubs pitchers WERE great. Our hitters WERE terrible and have been for a few weeks. We were fortunate to have some well-timed and well-powered hits from Ryan Braun and Bill Hall in the Cards series. Luck caught up to us this week, as we quite conceivably could've taken game one and been in okay position by taking just that one game. I've been yelling at the television the last four games just like everyone else. That doesn't mean we don't have a team capable of making the playoffs and beating a team or two.
  4. There's still a little time to flip Sheets and Sabathia for some prospects.
  5. It seems like the Cardinals series got the idea into the Brewers minds that they can go for homers in every AB and win every game in the late innings with one swing of the bat. A month ago we were a bit more modest in our approach and that must return; hopefully, this series is the wake-up call. After three must-win games lost, we must win this one! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. I'll third the extra costs of being in a relationship. I'm one of the guys that never needed to be in a relationship unless I found someone I really wanted to be with all the time, which I was lucky enough to find not long ago. Now I've been in a relationship for 6 months and we've been living together most of the time (we did know each other for a year before we hooked up), and my grocery bill has risen exponentially. I used to get away with buying pizza, mac n cheese, hot dogs, bread and beer, but now we have to have food stuffs to make "real" meals, and of course we can't save money by buying generic brands, we MUST have name brand food. Although I must say I'm very happy with my relationship. I thought I'd be the most happy being single and having freedom to do what I want all the time but if you find the right girl, she won't stop you from doing things you really want to do. That said... FTJ's right, all women are crazy.
  7. Now seems an appropriate time to leave an "upper decker" in the other apartment's toilet. However, somehow make sure that it's not your parents who will use the bathroom next.
  8. Yay, Brewers on TV in Minnesota! Will have to mute the announcers most of the game though http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Huge start for Ben Sheets. The defense must help him more than they did Sabathia last night. Maybe tonight Fielder adds to his NL lead in GW RBI for the season.
  9. What's frustrating is all the years that we said that the time is coming for the Brewers to be a good team and all the ridicule that was heaped upon us for our hope. Not blaming ESPN for this, just other people/fans/media in general. The thing about ESPN is it's the only major national source for all-things sports. That's why people are so contentious about their programming. It's frustrating when you want to see your team's highlights or real discussion and they spend twenty minutes of an hour show on stupid things like "Who's Next?", which college town is "Titletown USA" (what does that even mean?) or "analysts's" opinions that aren't even tied to a sport (Mike Golic talking about anything other than football comes to mind). That said, this is my 1000th post! Thanks all for allowing me to be here this long!
  10. There's no way to fluke your way to the season Derrick produced in 2005. He was a great pitcher at the time. I'll never understand why people are so harsh to players that, for whatever reason, fail. Then again, maybe I need look no further than the Crowd Behavior thread for my answer.
  11. Boy way too much negativity over one game. Step back from the ledge people.
  12. 2B Rickie Weeks SS J.J. Hardy LF Ryan Braun 1B Prince Fielder RF Corey Hart 3B Bill Hall CF Mike Cameron C Jason Kendall LHP CC Sabathia
  13. I only defend my opinions Except that when you say, That's what I thought. nothing is added to the discussion except an "I told you so", even though clearly you haven't "won" any argument and it's not really a defense as much as it is offense.
  14. [Well, here we are 54 games in, exactly 1/3 thru the season. Looking at how our team has performed and all the players that aren't contributing due to injury, I feel ok about being 2 games under .500 [[26-28]] . If through the next 54 we regress upwards toward what should be our true talent level with some luck and we go, say, 30-24, I would not be surprised if we find ourselves right back in the thick of the race.] 34-16 since this post http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I say again, take that Richard Justice! Maybe next time you won't be so foolhardy as to think you can predict the direction of a team by walking through their clubhouse.
  15. I harken back to last year when we were all talking about the Brewers' "collapse" to give away the division. This season, we've made up about the same number of games in about half the time. Where is the talk of "collapse"? I was nervous last year when the lead shrunk to about 5 games. If Cubs fans aren't nervous now, they are being delusional.
  16. It'll be interesting to see how Bush pitches after his layoff. Hopefully Ned didn't kill the Mad Plumber's buzz.
  17. My take is this: We expect our players to work very hard to be good ballplayers and not to just collect a paycheck but be passionate about winning ball games to get our team to the playoffs and yet we're expecting them to ignore their instinctive reaction to success in big-time situations. I don't think Ryan Braun is cocky, ie he thinks he's better than everybody. A confident person goes into the batters box thinking "I can do this" and then when he does, his reaction is like saying "I knew I could do it and I told you I could." If players can't take pride in their abilities, we lose what makes professional athletes professional athletes. I have no problem with what Braun did and it doesn't bother me when players from other teams do it. These aren't little leaguers who need to learn life lessons about sportsmanship to take with them as they go into their professions. As for the home run, it looked like it was gone by quite a bit and Braun knew it was gone.
  18. Incredible. Sabathia is a special pitcher. I always thought we could catch the Cubs this season but the idea that it could possibly happen this soon is remarkable.
  19. Let's go ESPN, get me some bonus coverage please!

  21. I have always liked Bill Hall as a person and teammate. Is that you Prince?

  23. Personally, I think the pen has been pretty solid since Torres moved to the closer role. Our pen isn't nearly as bad as people say it is (media creates a firestorm over it) Agreed. And I'm not sure why Melvin couldn't beat that deal for Rauch. It's not always common knowledge to GMs who exactly is available and sometimes you just get beat to the punch. Melvin could be biding his time to see just how much help he wants to get (if any) by the trade deadline. I think acquiring another solid reliever would help avoid a potential disastrous situation that could derail a great season, such as Gagne reverting back to April/May Gagne, Riske not staying healthy, Mota continuing to stink, Shouse wearing out his arm or God forbid something happening to Torres. At this point, after acquiring CC, Durham, Gibbons, I think Melvin will give this team as much help as he can.
  24. I'd say about 98% of major leaguers play the game the right way. That's what frustrates me when guys like Eckstein get praised during every AB for doing so. Is it because they can't find anything else good to say about the player?
