Jake Peavy: Filthy Cheater or Just Bad at Wiping?

from the big lead...

A reader sent in the following last night:

Hey guys, me and my friend caught these pictures after the final out of today's game. Peavy was about to shake hands with Adrian Gonzalez and bingo! My friend saw something. We rewinded it (thank god for Tivo) and confirmed a brown substance. Notice how its only on his two index fingers and thumb. What do you think?

It certainly looks an awful lot like the Tigers' Kenny Rogers circa 2006 World Series.

Did he pitch the whole game? He might have been dinking around in the dugout with some tar or something otherwise. Kenny Rogers on the other hand, THAT was suspect.

He was probably making some post-game brownies for his teammates in between innings

Or was he changing the oil in his car in the clubhouse...? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tired.gif

I caught this as well, during ESPN's recap. I saw it right away, and they didn't mention it. Seemed a little odd to me, wonder if anyone will ask him.

The field looks pretty wet to me. Was it raining?

Nope it was a beautiful sunny day as it is 99% of the time in San Diego.

I'd like to compliment Sheets4theHOF on the outstanding title to this thread. I imagine it would even make Geno green with envy.

And to actually participate in this thread, I think it is particularly odd that the "substance" seems to only be on the three fingers that would be used o hold a baseball. It might not be a bad idea to email the local Padres beat writer the picture and see if they can find out some sort of explination for this.

Also note the pristine white uniform. Almost seems too obvious, though.

Great job of catching this. It almost seems as if he was cheating he would do a better job of hiding it than that. Not saying he's not cheating but he'd have to be pretty stupid to make it that obvious. But then again what's the explanation if he's not greasing the ball? Interesting to say the least.

Could it be some of the 'mud' used to darken the ball rubbed off? Think of how many baseballs he handled in that game.

You knew me as Myday2001.

Well, it is his top hand (he bats RH), so that could be plausible. But I don't think the umps would be too keen on him not cleaning off the pine tar.

Maybe Brodie from Mallrats gave him the stinkpalm. But really though that would kind of suck if he was somehow cheating, though I doubt it. He's really really fun to watch.
