The return of Jim Edmonds?

Posted
I'm not sure if Edmonds has retired or signed with anyone, but I don't think he would be a bad option in CF. Maybe a platoon of Gomez and Edmonds could work in 2011? Just throwing a name out there that could be cost effective for the Brewers. He also seemed to enjoy his brief stay in Milwaukee last year. If Jim any gas left in the tank I think he would be a good veteran presence for a potential playoff contender.

I'd prefer Edmonds to Dickerson if he could still play center when necessary. He was fine out there last year, but I don't know whether or not the injuries to his legs/feet are still limiting him.

Edmonds hits LH like Dickerson. If he hit RH or SH, it might be a match. Probably see a vet (like Gibbons a couple years ago) signed to a AAA deal for depth. Don't see much else going on in the OF.

I'm trying to figure out why people are so dead set against Edmonds. The guy hit well last year and as a LH bat with a little power, he's something this team needs. Going further, he's not the defender that he once was, but I thought that he did a good job when called on. Considering cost and performance last season, I think that he's a better option than Cameron, Podsednik or Dickerson IF he's recovered from his injuries sufficiently to play center when necessary.

It's just that he is clearly at the tail end of his career and has been hampered by injuries. He was a good player, but I'm not even sure he'll be able to play this year. He's also going to turn 41 this summer. I just don't see the upside of signing him with guys like Dickerson and Boggs already signed.

"Jim Edmonds" is a phrase people know. It's like why Mark Prior still gets talked about, but to a less severe degree. I agree that he was a good player, but his body just didn't hold up last season, and now he's another year older.

I too would like Scott Podsednik, but I haven't seen or heard anywhere that Doug Melvin is looking to sign another outfielder. I saw on the MLB Network that he was content to go into the season with Carlos Gomez in CF with perhaps a part-time left-handed hitting platoon.

As far as I know, Edmonds played through some injuries last year. But he played well without missing significant time so I don't think that he's just a 'phrase'. As for him being older, he's the same age as Counsell- and he hit much better last year. As for Dickerson (and the small sample, coming off injuries, etc. excuses), I would be willing to bet that there were games in which Edmonds had more extra base hits than Dickerson's paltry 2 in 60 plate appearances, how's that for a small sample?

I would love to see Edmonds brought back. The guy can still hit, and played pretty well in CF last season. As long as he wasn't a clubhouse problem during his time w/ the Crew, I don't really see the down side.

Yeah! Dickerson sucks! But definitely don't mention that *he* was dealing with injuries in '10, too -- that'd ruin your argument.

And I quote from my response, 'As for Dickerson (and the small sample, coming off injuries, etc. excuses'.

Though I think it's preposterous to dismiss guys like Edmonds because Dickerson is on the roster, I'm done arguing whether or not Dickerson is a good or even decent player. I spent most of the winter after Mench was acquired engaged in the same type arguments (he only had x at bats, it was a small sample, new leagueetc). As far as I am concerned, Dickerson is not a valid option for CF. In my view he is 25th man/AAAA material (the third Mouton). At any rate, time will tell. Maybe I am wrong, and if so, at that time I will eat crow.

I found this piece from hardballtalk on NBC sports that pretty much sums up his injury issues as well as his prospects going forward.

If ever there was a sign a ballplayer should retire, this would be it:

Cincinnati’s Jim Edmonds injured his right leg running the bases after a solo home run in the second and did not return to the field in the bottom of the inning.

The Reds say that Edmonds, 40, has a strained right lower leg. According to the Associated Press, he hurt himself while “taking awkward steps just before he reached third base.”

Edmonds sat out all of 2009 before launching a comeback with the Milwaukee Brewers this season. He was traded to the Reds on Aug. 9.

Edmonds has already said he would likely retire at the end of this season, and Brewers manager Ken Kacha actually talked him out of quitting in early August. Seeing as how he has already been on the disabled list this season and is now getting hurt on home run trots, retirement seems just about guaranteed.

He played his hear tout for a lot of years but even he appeared to see the writing on the wall. He played as long as he could with injuries then succumbed to them in a very predictable way for someone his age and playing style.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
