On the TV it showed that fastball from Yo was below the zone. I think it was more of a fluke home run for Danny Espinosa than any fault of Gallardo's.

I would hesitate to call this a crummy start. Before missing his spot to Espinosa he had limited the Nats to nothing but weak singles. One bad inning doesn't make for a terrible start.

A line of 7.2 ERA, 1.4 WHIP is pretty crummy. Maybe he'll hold them in check for one or two more innings and bring those stats down, but as they stand, they're crummy. 89 pitches in 5.0 IP is also pretty crummy.

That's a bit of stretch... a pitcher who gives up more than 4 runs in outing didn't pitch well, the object is to limit the amount of runs scored by the opposition. It doesn't matter if the runs come 1 per inning or all in a single inning, if your team is losing while you are on the mound, you aren't pitching well enough to win, regardless of how many runs you've given up. Furthermore, one bad inning of 3+ runs is a terrible start if your team doesn't score more than 3. It's all relative... Really what you are saying is pitcher X was really good without blowup inning Y... the ole Bush and Narveson arguments thrown around this site. Sure if they don't blow up they had a good start, but since they did blow up, they stunk.

There is a difference between crummy results and crummy pitching. On the whole, results are all that really matter, so you are right that it was a bad start. But he certainly hasn't pitched poorly. 5 Ks, 0 BBs, and 1 extra base hit. Espinosa put a nice swing on it at a bad time for Yo.
