What do you think the Brewers could get in a trade for the guy? I know he had a decent season last year but I am by no means sold on the guy and think this is the perfect sell high opportunity. I know it won't happen but what about trading Wolf to replace some of the missing farm system and signing Oswalt to a 1 year contract? Would that make any sense?

Oswalt has missed plenty of time the past few years. Wolf hasn't. I don't see $2M & a so-so prospect being enough to offset the seemingly inevitable injury time.

If we're out of the pennant race then I'd consider peddling him for prospects near the trade deadline

I would have already moved him. Why not find out what you have in Peralta and Fiers before you spend a ton on long term deals for Greinke and Marcum? Plus you might have gotten something in return for him that helped this year. There would always be the option of trading for another veteran if you were in contention too with the salary flexibility dealing Wolf would have given them.

 

Despite making a fair amount of moves, this was a very cautious offseason for Melvin. That's not surprising because he's lately he's not been a guy who employed a strategy of selling high despite his experiences with Hall, Hardy and McGehee. In fact he's only sold high on players because of contracts ending like Sexson, Lee etc.

 

My feeling is that this year that strategy will bite him big time.

It would depend on the prospect return on Wolf. If it was worthwhile, I'd be all about that idea.

Wolf was the #2 FA SP two winters ago and Melvin, it turns out, was very smart to go after him rather than the #1 FA SP, John Lackey, first in terms of the size of contract, and then also in the professionalism of Wolf vs. the headaches Lackey's given Boston.

 

Say what you will about Wolf, but he's one FA acquisition by Melvin that's proven pretty darn good in hindsight.

Despite Wolf's success, I don't think the Brewers will get an impressive return in a trade. I'm leaning towards just keeping him until he hits FA and get draft picks(if he's good enough to be a Type B or above). Of course I know that there's a possibility that he'll stumble big time, but I'd rather take my chances with a draft pick than a mediocre return.

Neither could Ben Sheets after 2004 but he still was a great pitcher for how many innings he would give ya. I'll take quality over quantity any day especially when you have the kind of depth that the Brewers have at SP.

If you could get 160-180 innings out of Oswalt this team runs away with the central even without Fielder and Braun for 50 games.

Wolf's 2013 $10 million team option is a fallback should both Greinke and Marcum leave after this season. It also adds potential value in trade. If Zach proves too pricey, if Shaun continues his fall swoon, who knows? And yes, do Peralta and/or Fiers join 2013's rotation with minimal 2012 experience? All pretty fascinating...

I'm assuming that is sarcasm. When Wolf was signed, two years ago, many comparisons to Suppan were made. Less were made last year, but still were made. Its quieter this year...

 

It doesn't make much sense to me to trade Wolf unless you are going to pitch Peralta/Fiers in his spot (to save money). Any team that would trade for Wolf, could simply sign Oswalt instead. Plus, its getting a little late in the season to see big trades like that. Still could happen, but its atypical.

 

If we are out of it by the deadline, you have options for Greinke, Marcum and Wolf as trade-bait.

Wolf doesn't look pretty but man he pitched well last year, problem is when 's he's bad he's bad. Comparing him to Suppan is bordering on +$$@+%!%, Suppan was awful, Wolf is far from awful.

I don't think there's too many clubs that would give up much to get him now. Move him at the deadline if they're out of it and try to leverage some team's desperation into a decent prospect.

When Gallardo "doesn't have it" in a game, he's downright Suppan-esque, too. Even ace pitchers have crappy games every once in a while -- just fairly rarely.

 

Saying Wolf is Suppan 2.0 ignores the sum of his work the past two seasons and perhaps amounts to fixating only on his May/June 2010.

 

Thing is, Wolf isn't glitzy and wouldn't seem to garner you much in a trade. But with how salaries have gone the past 5 or more years, he's the type of veteran you still have to pay that kind of jing in order to a) get him to come to your team (if you're not one of the highest-profile spenders or perennial contenders), and b) give you the kind of production we've gotten from him.
