Will the Milwaukee Brewers entice Brophy's Chad McClanahan away from ASU?

Phoenix Brophy Prep third baseman Chad McClanahan isn't a lock to play next baseball season at Arizona State after being taken in the 11th round of the MLB draft on Saturday by the Milwaukee Brewers.

 

McClanahan, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound, power hitter, has an adviser. He had talked to every major-league team. They'd been told he probably wouldn't sign if drafted beyond the third round.

 

He knows that beyond the 10th round, the money slotted for draft picks wouldn't be enough to steer him away from his scholarship to ASU.

 

But as the 321st overall selection, McClanahan feels it "gives them the opportunity to put money together," to try to entice him to take the pro baseball route out of high school.

 

"We'll probably do some meetings," McClanahan said. "We'll see."

Quinnipiac right-handed pitcher Thomas Jankins of West Brookfield and Quaboag Regional was selected in the 13th round (No. 381 overall) by the Milwaukee Brewers.

 

Jankins, who was a T&G All-Star in baseball and basketball at Quaboag, is the 16th player in Quinnipiac program history to be drafted.

 

“It’s just everything I hoped it would be,” said Jankins, who was also at his family’s home Saturday. “It was great to have the family around and to get the call. I’ve been working since I was a little kid for this day and it’s just awesome to have all the hard work pay off.”

 

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder was the Bobcats’ top pitcher the last three seasons and his 180 career strikeouts rank eighth all-time in program history, fourth in Quinnipiac’s Division 1 era. This season, Jankins went 5-6 with a 3.26 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 85-2/3 innings. He struck out six or more batters in nine of his 13 starts.

 

He expects to be reporting to the Helena (Montana) Brewers, the team’s advanced rookie affiliate.

 

Pre-draft chatter, Jankins said, had him going anywhere from the fifth to the 20th round. “So I was all over the place with what I expected,” he said.

 

The MLB Draft Tracker Twitter feed was down at the time Jankins was selected.

 

“So we were watching TV, hanging out trying to relax,” Jankins said, “and I got a phone call from the Brewers scout and he said they selected me and it was just nice to hear.”

The smattering of successful players drafted 20+ does not make hedging a bad strategy. It's very smart business. And like I said, they had 20 other 20+ round picks this year to get the next Trevor Rosenthal, or whomever.

 

What they are hedging against is if Corey Ray were to have a major issue. So major he would be willing to take a deal underslot of at least $3mil to give Horn what he wants(is that what someone mentioned he wanted?). I guess a Dylan Covey type scenario could put that into play.

 

A career ending injury would be bad because Corey Ray wouldn't sign at all. Which last time I checked meant we would lose the bonus pool money allocated to that draft slot. Which would then make signing Horn impossible.

 

Mpst teams do it at some point in the draft, though using the 20th round pick seems a bit higher than I'd expect a team to draft a guy asking for that much money. At the end of the day hopefully that scenario making such a signing possible won't happen seeing it would mean bad news for Corey Ray.

 

And even if someone in the top 10 were to underslot in a major way, I didn't think the Brewers could use it on the 11+ rounds anyway.

 

And to add to the 20+ crowd, you have Mike Fiers and of course the greatest 40+ draft pick of all time: Mike PIazza.

 

Certainly, we are talking long shot lottery picks, but I don't understand why they use them this way either. Last year they had 3-4 late picks that they had no (or little) chance of signing.

Sorry for the double post, but it occured to me that we are probably looking at this (drafting an "unsignable" player) backwards.

 

What would it take for that player to sign at the slot they were drafted? Something to make them inelligble for college? An injury that they woudl prefer to rehab with a big league health insurance? A sudden need for money?

 

Those are probably as long of odds, too. But if one happens, you get a great player for a low price. Probably just worth as much as the 20+ draft pick making it big.

That's always been my take, CWH. Organizational fodder, or the chance one of those talents has a change in circumstance. I'll take the chance at that point.

Something else to consider is that DS has picked up quiet a few lower level lottery tickets. The Brewers just "need" less filler at the bottom end. Taking a flier on a long shot doesn't hurt them and can only help if something odd falls their way.

It's never happened yet, but someday it will, and said team will be very happy to have the insurance policy of a guy they probably wouldn't have signed otherwise at the price of a guy who was probably going to be nothing more than farm system fodder.

Another reason teams make these kinds of picks, besides to give a cool moment to the son of someone famous within the organization, is that there often isn't enough room in the farm system to sign everyone. A team could draft 40 guys it thought it could sign, but where are you going to put them all? Maybe the Brewers knew they had X number of roster slots available in the minors and they took all those unsignable players last year precisely because they knew they didn't have any more room for players on low-minors rosters. Which is true - they could have fielded teams in Helena and Maryvale this summer without anyone from the draft.

 

Yes, you can have just about as many guys as you want on rosters down there, but it's pointless to have an active roster of 40 guys because there's no way you're going to be able to play everyone and make decisions on them.

Anybody hearing anything on Chad McLanahan and/or Zach Clark? I've been googling these guys and not hearing anything.

 

With all the underslot signings, maybe they can satisfy McLanahan. He's open to something if the Brewers can get close. He'd be a nice coup. Keep your fingers crossed.

Personally I would guess we get one of them. I would prioritize McLanahan over Clark but with 850K before we go over 5% I think we have a decent chance at maybe getting both. Depends on the demands.
