Why isn't Burnes starting?

One of the “downsides” of now being a competitive team is that there is less room for proper pitching development at the MLB level. I think Jimmy Nelson is a good example (although maybe closer to the extreme) of how long it can take for a pitcher to develop into a solid major league starter.

Can burnes just take suters spot now?
Remember what Yoda said:

I think that is a ridiculous assumption, also. Who is making it? The team has indicated the decision was made based on hopefully helping both the player's development & the team's success.

I understand. But I disagree with this being needed to help their development. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Also, as I said and others have added onto. He is in the bullpen at the expense of Brent Suter. Brent Suter whose ERA is now pushing 5. Can people not question the argument that putting Burnes in the bullpen as opposed to starting him in place of Suter is helping the team?

Also, ALL of these starting pitchers the Brewers have put in the bullpen = two guys, Hader & Burnes

And Brandon Woodruff too.. They also did it with Tyler Thornburg and Wily Peralta a few years ago. Those are five of the top pitching prospects they’ve had over the past decade.

Suter has to be on a short leash. They said Peralta and Guerra are both going to be starting this week, going with 6 starters for now. I can't see that continuing long term.

Woodruff has relieved 7 games this year at the MLB level on an as needed basis. He's started 14 games between AAA/MLB. I'd say he's still being developed primarily as a starter.

The "they" that did it with Thornburg & Peralta a few years ago are no longer here so I guess I don't see how that's relevant to Burnes & any decisions on his usage.

I’d say he’s still being developed as a starter too. As in Corbin Burnes. But that doesn’t change the fact that he too is in the bullpen right now while Brent Suter is getting shelled.

“They” is the Brewers. Yes some of the decision makers are different but the thought process on this point seems to be the same.

Here is as direct a quote as you get

#Brewers manager Craig Counsell said "100%" that Corbin Burnes will return to starting role next season. That's his future in organization. But will continue to serve in relief this season out of need.

Top 5 bullpen. Mediocre at best starting pitching. We need him to be in relief out of need. Okay Counsell. Come up with a better reason.

Before today brewer starters had the 5th best era in the NL. Batting average against was 2nd. Ops 4th

I know they are a bunch of no names but the facts don't support that they have been mediocre at best.

Off subject. Why isn't Brad Miller never playing lately? It is like he never sees the field

He can't hit lefties....we've been seeing nothing but lefties

They may as well DL suter for ten day and just let Peralta start ..

Why even go to a 6 man rotation?

CC said in post game that it was defintely a DL injury.....having MRI tomorrow

They are ranked really low in quality starts though. In general they are mostly ok but There’s something to be said about going more than five innings. There is definitely room for improvement.

The ERA is good because the defense is elite. There is nothing that says this is a top 5 rotation. They are mediocre at best.

No they aren't.....were tied with the Dodgers for first in the league before today.

I don't know what ESPN considers to be a quality start, but there is absolutely no way we have gotten 6 innings or more from our starting pitcher 57 times this year.

I stand corrected......fangraphs has us near the bottom. Serves me right for thinking espn could get something right that is as simple as quality starts.

I just went and counted the QS by pitcher.

Miley - 2 out of 4

Peralta - 3 out of 7

Guerra - 7 out of 18

Wilkerson - 0 out of 1

Chacin - 6 out of 20

Anderson - 8 out of 20

Suter - 2 out of 18

Davies - 3 out of 8

Woodruff - 0 out of 4

Not that I think having a bunch of quality starts means much because I'd rather have a starter go 5.2 innings with 0 runs allowed than 6 innings with 3 runs allowed.

If he were in the rotation, I'm guessing he probably wouldn't be able to go much past 5 or 6 innings a start max, and of course he'd only pitch every 5 games.

None of our starters go more than 5 or 6 innings, he'd fit right in, assuming he could only go 5 or 6 innings max.

He only pitches every 5 games now as it is.

Yah I don’t care about the QO stat on this team. Many many times they are pulled just because the pen is so good

I don’t view it that way. I view as they are being pulled either because they aren’t pitching well enough to stay in or they can’t be trusted to keep pitching well enough to stay in. If they are pitching well I doubt Counsell is going to pull them just because the bullpen is good. The best way to keep the bullpen pitching well is to keep them fresh.

Neither of those things have been issues many times. Counsell just got a little too into his bullpen when it was doing so well. He was pulling the pitcher for a PH after 5 innings just because he could go to the bullpen. The bullpen was so good if the starter could go 5 innings and we had the right guys available a win was pretty much in the books. Counsell loves to go all in when we lead in the second half of the game and hates to risk wasting bullpen guys late if we are losing.

Not sure that is really the right way to manage the pitching staff, but that is how he does it. Of course I’m the long run such a lack of QO starts (by choice) is sure to catch up to us.

The fact that this organization thinks it's better to trot Suter out there every 5 days over Burnes or Woodruff blows my mind.

Suter is a gimmick pitcher with no stuff. Woodruff and Burnes are young with legitimate stuff, and nothing left to prove in the minors. They both have the make up of at least mid rotation major league starter, yet we are using them in the bullpen and using Brent Suter in the rotation over both of them. It makes zero sense.

I’ve given up on trying to understand why the Brewers do what they do with their pitching prospects. Aaron Wilkerson started a game not long ago. While Burnes sat in the pen.

It just always seems like the Brewers would rather go with the Wade Mileys and Brent Suters of the world over our top pitching prospects. Just look at how they've treated Brandon Woodruff. I'll never understand it.

What exactly has Brandon Woodruff done to make you think he should be starting? He's been quite the disappointment compared to some of these other pitchers coming up in my eyes.

Suter likely on dl for a while this time, Guerra and Peralra back so rotation is set. I believe Burnes will be a starter long term but they need him in the pen this year. Hard to argue, Barnes and Williams just cant be counted on.
