LHP Cole Hamels to Braves - 1 year, $18 million

Agreed on Keuchel. I'm glad the Brewers didn't go for this. I think we can find a better deal than this. Heck I think Lyles > Hamels at this point.

Come on! Take off the Brewers colored glasses. Hamels has been a top tier starting pitcher in the major leagues for over a decade. Not only does he have the track record Hamels had the better season last year under any objective standard.

Kind of assumed Hamels was going to get a 1 year deal for a higher $ value so I thought we were a good candidate after both Moose and Grandal left. Would have been an innings eater we may end up needing. I'm not opposed to Keuchel either if it makes sense.

I would say that Lyles' ceiling is probably what Hamels did last year. That is best case, though, and there's obviously a pretty low floor. But, given the likely cost when compared to potential production, I don't think think KeithStone's thought is abnormally out of line.

I took a quick look, up until about 2 minutes ago I thought Hamels was 38 going on 39. He's actually only going on 36...and yes that matters a lot. I suppose it's probably more likely that he has a better season than Lyles, but I still don't think he's worth $18m. Worth noting, Hamels velocity dipped to below 92 mph for the first time since he was 24. He also had nearly a 6 era in the 2nd half. I think it's very safe to say that Hamels is not a top tier starting pitcher anymore. He might work as a veteran #3 starter right now. $18m is a hefty price for a #3 starter.

It probably took a deal above $15 million to get him to pitch, that dude has made so much money he'd probably just retire if he didn't get a $ amount he deemed acceptable. The name value also for sure sells a lot more jerseys than Lyles does.

And this goes to show why we should be glad Stearns is running the ship...

2020 projections:

Hamels: 8-8, 4.14 ERA, 150 IP, 147 K, 1.353 WHIP, 3.4BB9, 8.5K/9, for $18,000,000

Lauer: 8-9, 4.41 ERA, 145 IP, 141 K, 1.386 WHIP, 3.2BB9, 8.8K/9, for $563,500

I don’t know about a number three starter certainly in the first half of last season he was the Cubs number one starter then suffered an oblique injury, like Woodruff, and his results weren’t as good after returning from injury.

I guess it’s the problem with being a Brewers fan. We know they payroll is never going to go much beyond $100 million and around the league front line starting pitching goes for $18 million+ Per season. The math just doesn’t look good for adding an 18+ million dollar salary; yet cost controlled front line starting pitching isn’t available in a trade at a palatable price. That’s why the Brewers usually get band aids for the rotation or hope to catch lightning in a bottle on a reclamation project.

I would have liked to see him in a Brewers uniform, but it's clear that the Braves are in a win now mode and aren't as concerned about salary. Hope that the Brewers will find quality pitching that fits within their budget.

$136 million last year, just for the record.

Yep and it was smaller than every team in the NL Central but for Pittsburgh and the 6th smallest overall in the NL

Not too bad for the smallest market in baseball. And still pretty significantly "beyond" $100 million...

goalposts moving at the speed of sound lately around here...

Specific to Hamels - he was awful after returning from that oblique injury...and since his oblique is just as old as he is, I wouldn't want to throw close to $20M at an aging LH starter who found sort of a 1 year renaissance to a career with the Cubs when he was looking done while pitching for the Rangers back in 2018. Plus he poo-pooed the Brewer organization in the media. Not exactly shocked that he isn't a Brewer - and also glad.

It’s not moving the goal posts, it’s perspective. A super majority of teams have payroll in excess of 100 million. A third of the teams are closer to 200 million than 100 million. Viewed in that context a payroll of 126 million+ isn’t that significant

$136 million. Not sure why you keep changing the number to suit the narrative, but it's not a good look.

Can this post be pinned atop every single damn thread we have around here?

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
