Ravens-Steelers game once again moved back to Wednesday. Seriously, if you have to move a game that many times, the NFL should just make the Ravens forfeit the game. It's unfair to the Steelers and could cost them the #1 seed.

It really doesn't make sense what they're doing. Apparently they made the Broncos play without a QB as punishment and to make an example of them for not following protocol. I guess I can follow that but now they are punishing the Steelers for something they didn't even do. Some Ravens were going to boycott the game if they were forced to play on Tuesday. To that I would say too bad, take your beating and move on.

I've seen nothing official but there's been lots of "reports" that because the Broncos QB's weren't wearing masks the league is effectively punishing them for violating COVID protocol. Not sure why they made the 49'ers play on a Thursday with half their offense ineligible instead of moving the game. The league seems to be bending over backwards for the Ravens which is screwing over the Steelers. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that there is zero consistency or logic to how Goodell is handling this because he's already shown that's how he operates with everything.

It's because Baltimore had an outbreak, whereas Denver had 1 guy and 3 others who were non-compliant with the masking. Basically the same thing happened to San Francisco a few weeks ago before they played GB. The only difference is that it wasn't 4 QBs, so no one said a word. The league did say that they would change games for an outbreak and not for individual players.

Complaining about the Broncos QBs not wearing masks is one thing. Just blaming someone because they got COVID is another. Nothing is 100%. People will get sick. It annoys me to see people getting sick blamed.

It's amazing to me that the NFL put forth a "business as usual" schedule in a non business as usual season. There should have been at least two bye weeks per team, with at least one late season full league bye week to make up postponed games. They had all offseason to build some flexibility into the schedule and chose to do everything on the fly instead. Stupid.

 

Now they're out of flexibility with no bye weeks remaining for any teams and they're caught with their pants down trying desperately to salvage every game on the schedule which is likely to get near impossible with winter surges likely to make this thing worse before it gets better.

I think this is all very fair and accurate. An 18 week season with two byes made so much sense.

To top it off all 3 Bronco QBs that were kept from playing Sunday because they watched film while being maskless in the presence of Driskel have continued testing negative and are cleared to resume practice. Far as I know improper mask use had nothing to do with the Ravens' outbreak. It's more of a 'virus gonna virus' sort of thing than most want to admit, but the weird way the NFL and even various government agencies attempt cracking down on non-compliance of evolving and sometimes questionable at best protocols is, frankly, scary. These protocols are helpful in mitigating risk of viral spread, but they're nowhere close to 100% effective - unfortunately punishments are enacted like they have demonstrable proof that failure to adhere to certain guidelines is the only reason someone was infected.

 

Daily testing helps to prevent a roster with emerging infections from playing a game that could lead to a multiple team outbreak, but it doesn't necessarily limit a lone team's initial outbreak because it often takes several days before positive tests start showing up in infected people. The NFL trying to get this Ravens/Steelers game in tomorrow is essentially throwing caution to the wind in terms of preventing viral spread between rosters, and the quick turnaround for the next game on both teams' schedules means they would really be rolling the dice to prevent an outbreak on one team from quickly morphing into 4 (Ravens, Steelers, and their next opponents) without daily testing helping much at all.

Particularly with foregoing preseason games and what should have been the assumption that no games would include fans of any substantial crowd size, they had plenty of calendar available to fold in 2-3 leaguewide bye weeks - including a week off at the end of the regular season to try and reset infections for playoff rosters. Instead they will likely need to push the schedule back haphazardly in a couple weeks, and some teams are going to be really adversely affected because of it.

I don't view it any differently than the NFL's hundreds of existing examples of setting a set of rules they expect the players to follow and punishing them accordingly if they don't. It's really no different than the NFL saying that all jerseys need to be tucked in on the sideline (they do require this, actually) and levying a fine if you don't comply. You can debate the merits of the rules I suppose, but they have every right to enforce their own rules for COVID as they would with any other.
