Brewers sign Arcia for 1 Year/ $2 million

Just to re-post my thoughts from this morning if Arcia does hit in 2021 the way he hit this year and if his defense reverts back to even just 'above average', he'll be well worth the $2 million he'll get paid in 2021. Neither can be counted on, though.

No better option, hopefully he can post at least a 0.1 WAR next year.

It isn’t guaranteed so we have the ability to find something better this off-season still and can easily kick him to the curb if he doesn’t make the team. That would be my guess.

"Arcia's deal is not guaranteed"

?

I guess that would suggest it is incentive laden, or contingent on a certain number of AB's?

no. unless the rule has changed, clubs can keep arbitration-eligible players on their roster until late spring training, and then cut them. if they do so, they're on the hook for only one-sixth of the salary.

I'm not all that optimistic that Arcia will repeat his solid offensive season over the course of a full schedule, but for $2m it's probably worth seeing if he can. Especially since Urias didn't show much in his limited time last season.

Doubtful he could have gotten a better deal elsewhere. This seems more a matter of both sides being stuck with each other. I want to be there when they put up his plaque on the Wall of Honor, just to see the awkwardness of the moment.

it's worth noting that last year, the brewers signed arcia to a non-guaranteed contract just after acquiring luis urias.

arcia went on to have a hot cactus league and urias, out with an injury, never got a chance to battle for a spot.

time will tell what happens next . . .

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I Like Arcia and think he still this team best SS.

I'm with you and it's not that close. He's starting to get it at the plate and his defense will be fine. A bargain at $2 million.

If we get 2020 Arcia, this is probably a good deal. If we get 2018-2019 Arcia, we got hosed.

Who's playing SS without Arcia for Milw in 2021? Urias for a full season? Who's the backup? Not sure you have a better FA or player to call up from minors that exceeds what Arcia brings good or bad.

Good point. Even in what is likely going to be a down free agent market, they weren't going to be able to go out and sign a SS that provides more production than Arcia for $2 million.

Sadly, there doesn't appear to be anybody better on the FA market. And a trade would probably cost them someone from the major league roster.

So a $2 million contract seems like a fair price for an experienced, bottom rung SS with a bit of upside.

Steamer has him as a 1.2 fWAR SS next year, 33rd in MLB. It's hard to win with too many guys ranking 33rd at their position, but maybe they can handle one.

I'm more optimistic about Arcia than I probably should be. I think he puts up a .750 OPS and goes back to above average defense. Might just be setting myself up for disappointment, though.

It's probably because of players like Segura and Gennett, but I've always figured that we'd give up on Arcia and he'd immediately become an All-Star with his new team.

I think he was called up way before he was ready when Villar was doing fine at SS, and he's never fully put it together. I hope that he's finally starting to click and can be a decent player. If not, he's not costing too much and we can look to fill shortstop later. Right now, we have bigger holes to fill.

I think this is spot-on, particularly the last two sentences. In an off season with more limited resources than usual, it's completely reasonable to make one last bet on Arcia breaking out, especially considering the progress he made offensively in 2020.
