Conversation about game threads - please read

Posted

Hi, so I was informed by someone that with the old software, the game threads were a "global" post, in that they appeared everywhere on the forum. Unfortunately, this software does not offer that feature. As a result, having a dedicated game thread forum is a bit awkward.

So do we want to keep the game thread forum as-is or should we begin using the Brewers forum for game threads?

Over at Twins Daily, we have a game thread archive and the next morning, I move the old game thread from the Twins forum into the archive forum. It's a five second process so no big deal.

Thoughts? I'm fine with either, I just wanted to present an alternative given this particular limitation of the new software.

I like the idea of a 'Stickied' Post for the Day of Regular Season games and then archiving once that Game Day is over. Sounds like a very sensible means of archiving games long gone (and surely all marked as 'W's) while moving on toward the next promise of Victory.

I agree with this sentiment

I'm fine with it being pinned to the top of the "Milwaukee Brewer Talk" Forum as others have stated.

I noticed that this thread appears as a "featured discussion" at the main "Forum" level.  Would it work to have the current game day thread appear like that so when a person enters the forum area they can click on the game thread before entering a specific forum?

Yeah, absolutely, that's an easy thing to do. We will also run banners across the top of the site pretty regularly during game time, highlighting the game thread. I'm not sure if you've seen one of those banners on the site yet, I've only used it once or twice.

I don't know if this is possible - but we used to have a Brewers live pop out game chat somewhere here. It was honestly the funniest part of BFNet when we had it. It got toxic as always when things weren't going our way ... but man do we have some witty people on this board and I was in there way to often enjoying the chatter.

Can anyone help me with what that exactly was and why it went away?

This software used to have a chat function that was quite nice but they retired it for unknown reasons. It's possible I could look for an alternate solution, though it's not something I'm likely to get to anytime soon.

Totally get if the chat is not feasible. Mostly just saying I remember that function. I seem to remember it being part of that 2011 run? It was indeed very fun.

Also agree that having it in Brewers is best.  I usually forgot it was global actually.

Not sure if there's a process, but I always liked that the game thread was up early, usually mid-morning even for night games.  There's always some nice chatter around possible lineups, roster moves, and figuring out whether someone inevitably calling it a "must win game" is serious or serious.

My recollection is that a software change (or maybe the change from bizarre Yuku to phpBB) resulted in a more clunky chat.

I might still have a couple of epic chat logs from well back in the day that I copied and pasted into my email.  I'd have to do some digging to see if they're still there.  The chats were not retained on the site at any point.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
