Game Thread (7/09/2022): Pirates (Thompson) at Brewers (Woodruff) - 3:10 PM CDT

A very disheartening game. 

Games like today’s, and several others the last few weeks, highlight how fragile the Brewers winning formula is. The depth in the starting rotation has been compromised,  the bullpen is leaking oil, and the offense is simply not scoring enough.

Losing games when the ace starters deliver 6 or 7 shutout innings can’t happen very often, but the offense is giving them and the bullpen virtually no margin for error. When the point was made on Sunday that the Brewers can’t score 5 runs every game, I didn’t think that meant that they couldn’t score 5 runs in ANY game (at least not without a free baserunner and an intentional walk to prime the pump). Since the 19 run outburst against the Pirates the Brewers have scored 19 runs total in regulation in the next 7 games.

It’s hard to predict what direction this team is going. I think everyone looked at these 10 games against the Pirates and Cubs as an opportunity to rack up 6-7 wins or more. Now they need a win tomorrow just to split them. Then they face a tough 6 game road trip before the ASG.

Your memory doesn't jibe with the truth. They are hitting considerably BETTER with men in scoring position.

The Brewers 123 wRC+ with RISP is tops in all of MLB.

The Brewers 121 wRC+ in high leverage situations is 5th in baseball.
