Just add Fastball Freddy with cheap control and Chourio and tell me the other teams top offers beating that for #1 and #2 piece?  Then just fill out the next 3 prospects and call it a day. Giving that team a 2 season run for the WS before trading everyone away after 2023 as a mini rebuild. The one thing we don't have is a true #3 in the batting lineup. Problem would be solved. And you can trade Soto for something back after 2023 so the "big market" team has a year to discuss extention.

Peralta has a ton of trade value, and any team hoping to compete over the next few seasons would love to have him. He has a lot less value to the Nationals who are undoubtedly going into a multi-season rebuild by trading away Soto. By the time they'll hope to be contending again, Peralta will be a free agent.

So you want to trade Peralta, who is cheap, under control for years to come, and will more than likely be our ace after Burnes and Woodruff bail?  All for less than a 1.5 year rental that probably won't be enough to get us to the world series, especially after giving up our #3 pitcher in Peralta, who could easily be a #1 or #2 for most teams.

Monty.

Who gives a rip on the Nats next future years. They can flip Freddy while they go through a rebuild. Or they can extend him. Peralta at 8mil for 2 option years is simply holding a Joker to play down the road.

Hopper.

If that is what it takes to land a generational talent hitting at #3 the next 2 playoffs you betcha. It takes talents to get that talent. We've  got #1 and #2 SP covered. #3s aren't guaranteed 2 starts in a series. A generational #3 hitter vs a 1 maybe 2 start playoff pitcher in a series? And it's not like the 3 options behind are horrible options.

I bring up Freddy because what timing to remove him off the 60day IL..... During final hours of trade deadline.

On their recent "Trade Value Series," fangraphs had Peralta at #32 (ahead of Woodruff at #35). They had Soto at #6.

At first blush, I felt the same way... ("We can't trade Peralta and his contract!")

But upon further review, I think this is a really intriguing option. I think this would make the Brewers a better team now, and through 2024. Or, they could simply turn around and trade Soto all over again to a team that thinks they could extend him. They would also prevent the Cardinals from trading for him.

Make no mistake. Trading Peralta and his contract would be a HUGE consideration. But this team as it is currently constructed, can absolutely handle losing him now, and with the trade returns of any of the other prospective trades of our pitchers (Burnes/Woody/Lauer/Houser/Ashby/Small... like, we have A LOT of trade assets here), we could probably backfill our rotation later as well!

In fact, after writing this, I think the Brewers SHOULD pursue Soto with Peralta as the primary return piece. I have no idea what else they would demand, but I don't think anything should be off the table if the Brewers can actually be BETTER now, without selling the entire farm. I wonder if the same thing could be said if they made Ashby the primary piece.

It should be Ashby not Peralta.  If you are getting Soto its to push over the next two seasons.  Peralta is much better than Ashby at this point.

After the last few years, I doubt AJ Preller would find Soto the first player he wouldn't overpay by a huge amount.  The Padres will sell the farm to get Soto and probably extend him at a ridiculous amount.
