Francisco Nina, who played one season in the Brewers farm system in 2022, passed away earlier this week in the Dominican Republic.  He was 20 years old and had been battling cancer for the better part of a year.

Absolutely devastating. All the best to his family and friends. Prayers his legacy, tho entirely too short, can live on with lasting impact. Thank you for sharing.

So, so sad. This is what we wrote upon Nina's May 1st, 2023 release, among many others that day:

OF Francisco Nina was a $10,000 signing from the January 2022 international class. Listed at a lanky 6'5", 175, Nina homered once (four doubles), but otherwise slapped his way to a .212/.301/.271 line (.572 OPS) during his age 17 season. Nina fanned 38 times in 118 AB's with 12 walks, we've seen others with similar lines net a second-chance year, but as mentioned above, that wasn't the case in this round of cuts.

As always, we wish all the best and hope that if they wish, they find future baseball opportunities.

A Darrell Thompson sighting --

Thompson to pitch for United States in Premier12 tournament

The 30-year-old Thompson, a left-handed relief pitcher, was selected to the U.S. team after being invited to a training camp in Phoenix.

Thompson has been a free agent since he asked for his release from the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A Nashville team in June. Thompson was placed on Nashville’s seven-day development list on June 15, which keeps players on the active roster but doesn’t allow them to pitch in games. The release was granted June 24. In 15 games, Thompson pitched 14 innings and had a 2.57 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, .167 batting average against and 17 strikeouts. Thompson had been with Nashville since May of 2023.

"The 2024 Premier12 will feature the world’s 12 top-ranked teams (as of December 31, 2023) in an international competition in Japan, Mexico, and Taiwan. After placing second in the first rendition of the competition in 2015 and fourth in the 2019 tournament, Team USA looks for its first gold medal in Premier12 history. The team will begin its 2024 Premier12 campaign in Guadalajara and Tepic, Mexico, from November 9-14 and will look to advance to Tokyo, Japan, for the final round of the competition."

Current Royals farmhand Cam Devanney also on the roster.

For anyone wondering, the roster listed by Jim is not up to date as of Thompson's latching on (Congrats, Darrell!). For an up to date current roster via the USA Baseball website visit THIS page. It goes without saying, this is a massive opportunity for both Thompson and Devanney. Devanney will look to show the Royals he is qualified to assume their MLB club utility role. Thompson will hope to show out to get offered his next contract. No pressure!

I just saw this. He gets a coveted 7 figure salary while trying to build on his incredible last month and a half starting for the Sounds to hopefully get more serious MLB attention next off-season. White's mother is also Korean so there is a bit of that rarefied feel good deeper layer here. Good luck, Mitch!

INF Pablo Reyes (an all-time favorite utility player of mine in the Brewers system for a variety of reason) has signed on with the Yankees in hopes of earning the trust of the MLB clubhouse as a key utility piece. AND, RHP Jason Alexander has signed on with the Oakland Athletics in hopes of reclaiming the magic he experienced with the Brewers just two years ago. Best of luck to both!

Young man keeps getting chances - you'll see via the Transactions log on his player page that RHP Wilfredo Cordero, who did not pitch in 2024, joined the Brewers Dominican League team in July 2023 after his release from the Rangers' Arizona Complex League team.

OF Jahmai Jones has signed on with the Detroit Tigers organization for the 2025 season. Brewers fans may remember his shining moment as a call-up:

In other news, LHP Darrell Thompson came aboard for Team USA vs Japan in game one of Super Group play.

Quote

Darrell Thompson replaced Hill in the fifth and retired the first batter on a ground out before three consecutive hits–including an RBI double by Shogo Sakakura–knotted the game at one. Austin Vernon relieved Thompson and nearly limited the damage, but Kozono ripped a two-out triple down the right field line to give Japan a 3-1 lead.

RHP Hobie Harris, who pitched in the Minnesota Twins org last season after a cup of coffee (or two) with the Nationals in 2023, has signed with the New York Metropolitans. For those who don't quite remember, Harris pitched for the Brewers and that immensely deep and successful 2022 Nashville Sounds squad.

RHP Harold Chirino, unsurprisingly, has signed a Minor League FA contract with the San Diego Padres. He does indeed become an alumni in his first month outside the Brewers organization in official capacity. Spencer and I just touched on Chirino's game, and his likely re-upping with an MLB organization in rapid fashion, in our recent episode One Minor League season recap. All the best to Mr. Chirino as he looks to continue honing his immense pitching tools in hopes of a call-up down the line.

From MLBTR…

“The Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli reports that 18 teams expressed interest in signing Rodriguez. That sheds light on why the Braves needed to offer him a 40-man spot to sweeten the deal.”
