If anyone has reddit, the Reds game thread last night is worth a look in... lots of grumbling about both Benson, and just shock at the power of Colin Rea

The Brewers have definitely looked better against lefties recently, hopefully some power can come to the fore again this game, they've been kind of lacking in the home run department, but could be another tight affair as Abbott has been lights out against anyone not Milwaukee, going eight innings of one hit ball last time out. Corbin has shown signs of Cy Burnes since adjusting his pitch usage in various situations, leaning heavier on that wicked curveball. Can he stay scoreless post all star break?

Also the Reds bullpen is heavily taxed as of late, and they could really use a long Abbott start. Same for the Brewers, though they'd love to build a lead and hope for JC Mejia and Uribe to close it down

Reds might be happy at that, they've gone 0-39 with four walks to 23 strikeouts against Payamps and Williams

Also if you can pick Abbott's fastball, you can hit him really hard, His offspeed stuff has been money, even though a lot of it's been in the strike zone, but that fastball has overpeformed and an xSlg of .540, you've got to do some damage to it. He's found a lot of the strike zone with his sweeper too, but an xBA of under .100

The curve and change have been plus too, so wait on fastball

(He throws it almost every 2-0 count if that helps)

I’m a little amused by the comment that Abbott has been lights out about anyone but Milwaukee.

He hasn’t exactly been bad against the Brewers either, shutting them out for 6 innings on one hit in his debut and allowing only two solo home runs, and one other hit in six innings in another outing.

So, he has had two very solid quality starts against the Brewers and a third one where the Brewers got to him for 6 runs.

It’s an oddity that this will be his fourth start against the Brewers in only his 10th MLB start. He hasn’t faced any other team more than once.

If facing Abbott, multiple times, gives the Brewers an advantage, it didn’t show in his latest outing against them.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Abbott vs. Brewers: 4.41 ERA, 1-2 record, 8 total runs runs given up

Abbott vs. rest of baseball: 1.15 ERA, 4-0 record, 5 total runs given up

It may be just one start in particular where the Brewers lit him up, but that statement is still factually correct.

Regardless of how the last 2 games play out the Reds fan have to just be so torqued that they would be solidly owning the division if not for the games against us.

Woke up this morning pleasantly surprised we won last night. That was probably a game we had no business winning. Another superior pitching performance and the offense doing the bare minimum to win.

I understand that you like to pick out my comments and nitpick on them whenever possible.

This one is especially humorous.

I never said that the comment was literally, factually inaccurate, I was just pointing out that in Abbott’s 3 starts against the Brewers he has been very effective in two of them. It’s not like the Brewers have beaten him around each and every time he has faced them, which someone who didn’t know about the other starts might have inferred.

I laid out the facts and people can decide for themselves how significant that is. Maybe they would agree that a more complete summary of Abbott’s record would have been “Except for the one start against the Brewers at AFF Abbott has been lights out every time out, including his 2 other starts against the Brewers.”

The stats literally back that up so I don’t see what there is to be amused about.

What’s humorous is that the very thing you’re accusing me of doing (i.e. nitpicking) is precisely what you’re doing in this situation.

I thought I explained both in the original message and in the reply to you why I find that stement to be potentially misleading. But, if you disagree or don’t get it, that’s OK.

Oh I get it. I just don’t find it to be that misleading or amusing.

And I also see that the very thing you’re accusing me of doing (i.e., nitpicking) is what you’re doing to another poster’s statement.

So, you disagree with me. Got it.

If the OP is bothered by my response, I’m sure he can raise it himself.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure I registered my disagreement from the first post. To imply it's somehow "amusing", when it's patently true, seems pretty off to me.

And again, find it funny you complain about my nitpicking only to do the very same thing to another poster in the same post.

I’m glad I gave you a chuckle.

I don't know what Tyrone is still doing on the active roster if he's not going to play against a LHP. They must be trying like hell to trade him for even a lottery ticket because he's basically a waste of a roster space right now.

OK, so I was wondering if Frelick was sitting today vs the LH, and how much wailing & gnashing of teeth there would be if he was. Let the fun begin (?).

It makes for one interesting batting order, I'll say that. Even more so than normal lol.

If like I speculated above Frelick was sitting, I thought TT would be in there either at DH or RF. But even though it's a lefty throwing I don't think Abbott is all that good a matchup for him.

I suppose Toro would be a better fit, at least until several shoes drop in the next week (potentially).

At least we don't have to watch Ashcraft tonight.  Dude look like the Buc-ees mascot with that doughy little face.

CC says he's cutting back on Winker's playing time. He's going to use him more in pinch hit situations.

Maybe Winker will be spend more time at batting practice or whatever to get going. I know the Brewers don't want to lose millions by sending him packing.

That seems appropriate for Joey.  I really want guys like Jesse and rowdy to play to their potential but at some point you have to change the plan or cut your losses.
