With the DSL Cerveceros Uno trailing the very talented DSL Phillies Blanco, 3-0, 17-year-old Nicaraguan RHP Enniel Cortez came on in relief of 18-year-old Jose Meneses (rare off day - 3 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 3 K, 3 R 1 Earned).

Why do I bring up Cortez? Because, like Mogollon and (to a lesser extent) Reyes in 2022, he is flashing in nearly every start. Through 3 IP (bullpen), 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R, and 5 K today, Cortez adds further case-making work to an already fantastic season. Coming into today's bullpen work, Cortez had worked 8 G, 6 GS, 33 2/3 IP, 39 K, 5 BB, 5 ER, 1 HR, 2 HB, 0.197 BAA, 0.86 WHIP. And the BAA and the WHIP appear ready to lower even further. This is stellar output for a 17-year-old in his first professional season. I had already taken notice. If you hadn't, I believe it's time you start tracking his every outing.

The DSL Crew Dos had runners on the corners with one down in a 1-1 game in the top of the 5th. They had talented INF Filippo Di Turri at the dish - exactly what you'd want - and, unfortunately, he grounded into a 6-4-3 DP. It stays 1-1 and they head to the bottom of the 5th frame.

Always fun to see which pitchers emerge as the sample grows throughout the DSL summer. Cortez is far and away the leader with a 2.74 FIP before today's game, extra impressive given his age. Some of the other DSL arms faring well in terms of Ks/BBs/HRs so far are...

Anthony Flores (18) 3.53 FIP
10.55 K9 | 3.93 BB9 | 0.25 HR9

Aneuris Rodriguez (19) 3.57 FIP
9.99 K9 | 3.78 BB9 | 0.29 HR9

Esmir Suarez (18) 3.60 FIP
8.67 K9 | 2.33 BB9 | 0.33 HR9

Eric Prado (17) 3.78 FIP
7.20 K9 | 2.40 BB9 | 0.30 HR9

Melvin Hernandez (16) 3.84 FIP
7.14 K9 | 2.17 BB9 | 0.31 HR9

RHP Logan Henderson (3.02 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 11.9 K/9 in 50.2 IP) gets another opportunity to dominate Low-A ball, starting as Carolina tries to extend its series lead in Fayetteville to 4-2. 3B Luke Adams has reached base in 18 of his last 19 games.

High-A Wisconsin has lost 3 of 4 in South Bend and turns to RHP Edwin Jimenez to turn the tide with a performance like his last outing (7.1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 BB, 10 Ks). 1B Ernesto Martinez’s .786 OPS leads the team by a hefty margin.

AA Biloxi is tied 2-2 in their series in Pensacola and starting RHP Tobias Myers will try to extend his decent 4-game run (.181 batting average against, with 31 Ks in 22.2 IP, but 5 HRs as well). 1B Zavier Warren has a 10-game hitting streak.

The AAA Sounds are also tied 2-2 in their home series against Durham. Starting RHP Jason Alexander needs to turn around his rough 4-game stretch (18 ER, 31 H in 18 IP). 3B Cam Devanney has a 6-game hitting streak, with 2 HRs in his last 3 games.

Also the disappointment when you go check in on ACL team and there's no bitonti, Pratt or boeve.

Thankfully o'rae has signed and stolen a base as per

Great to see the “B” ACL squad pull out a 4-3 extra inning win over ACL White Sox.

After walking 25 in 18.1 IP coming into this game, nothing suggested 19-year old RHP Darling Solano would be granted a start, much more deliver this: 4 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 K.

Offensively, CF Dylan O’Rae provided another 2 singles and his 26th stolen base, but it was 3B Ney Serrano who really came through with 3 singles, 2 RBIs and a stolen base. SS Alexander Perez also had an RBI double to open the scoring.

LHP Anfernny Reyes earned the win for pitching the two extra innings and only allowing the Manfred Man to score in the second frame.

The game also featured organizational debuts for 10th round pick 23-year old RHP Morris Austin (1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K) and undrafted free agent 23-year old RHP KC Hunt (1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 K).

Logan Henderson twirled another gem today. 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO. Can we get this guy to Appleton already?

With Frelick/Uribe coming up on graduation and Jarvis traded, gotta think Henderson takes one of those vacated Top 20 spots in end of the year voting.

How many innings would Henderson be expected to pitch this year?

13 innings last year…….coming off surgery?

Looks like he pitched 97 in JUCO in 2021. I imagine they have him finish around that number this year. Maybe closer to 80 than 100 but he's already at 56 and has maybe 6 more starts.

Luis Castillo (1-4, 2B, BB) and Jadher Areinamo (2-3, 2B, BB) doing the heavy lifting on offense as Carolina leads 4-1

Yujanyer Herrera has thrown two scoreless with 3 H | 2 K in relief of Logan Henderson. See if he comes back out for the 9th at 33 pitches so far.

Mudcats turned to Yerlin Rodriguez for the ninth and he surrendered a lead off home run before striking out a pair for his 8th save in as many opportunities.

Now up to 30 K | 9 BB over 25.1 IP in his age 21 campaign.

A bunch of guys I’m super surprised still haven’t been promoted. With it being August figure some of these guys will be starting to get end of year promotions to get feet wet.

107.9 MPH exit velo times 28 degree launch angle equals 418 feet if all the invisible laser beams are to be believed.
