Ken Rosenthal posted a list of names that are of interest to the Brewers in their quest to replace departing manager Craig Counsell. Unsurprisingly, coaching staff of teams like the Astros and Dodgers make the list, though some of the names are both surprising and familiar. Apparently, Milwaukee is keeping the door open to an internal option, Rickie Weeks. The long-time Brewer came back to the organization early in 2022 as an assistant to player development.

Also on the list is grizzled veteran of the diamond and dugout, Don Mattingly. While Mattingly has shown to be a capable manager for teams in the past, it's hard to envision a development-first and progressive organization like the Brewers is interested in an aging rehire but only time will tell what their plans might be.

MLB Network reports Don Mattingly on the short list of potential new Brewer managers.

He's the least appealing option on the list of names I've seen, IMO. I just don't get why the Brewers would go that route.

The Astros are trying to keep bench coach Joe Espada from interviewing with the Brewers for their managerial opening until they decide on who will replace Dusty Baker.

Espada is a candidate for both jobs. The oddity here is that, as The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reports, Espada’s contract with the Astros expired on Oct. 31, allowing him to do whatever he’d like. Yet GM Dana Brown still said Tuesday that the Brewers were being denied permission to interview in Milwaukee.

It sure is easy to hate the Astros.

I mean can they legally do that? With FO executives I thought you couldn't prevent them from interviewing for positions that would be promotions. I believe that was the whole reason we changed Stearns position from GM to POBO so the Mets/others couldn't interview him for POBO roles. Does that rule not apply for coaching staff members?

I don't think there's any rule preventing people under contract from interviewing for literally any job, it's more of a courtesy that teams extend to one another to not poach laterally. And if the person is under contract, the contracted team has to grant permission.

He may be far down on their list (I hope he is). This might simply be a case of a national network getting the shakes if they DON'T feature a name that played in NY & was coaching in the AL East.

Of the former managers floating around, I'd be more interested in Kapler than Donny Ballgame.

Brewers notoriously are zipper lipped about everything.  We will probably will be 100% surprised again, I just hope it will be a good one this time.  Getting a 1/2 dozed nobodies for Josh Hader is at the top of the list.

What is “a 1/2 dozed nobodies” even supposed to mean?

Probably 1/2 dozen nobodies.

Your right, I do agree the secondary part of the trade for Josh Hader looked better after the William Contreras deal.
But the initial part for Hader, the Brewers acquired reliever Taylor Rogers, righty Dinelson Lamet (whom they immediately designated for assignment) and two prospects, outfielder Esteury Ruiz and left-hander Robert Gasser.

None of those guys are or were nobodies.

I should have said so far because 2 are with Nashville Sounds and doing well.

Taylor Rogers 5.48 ERA. with Brewers ... Average, I actually liked him very much at first.

Esteuty Ruiz .000 batting average with Brewers

Dinelson Lamet DFA 1st week

Estury Ruiez Looks awesome in AAA so no comment yet

Robert Gasser also looks very promising in AAA
