Think there is room to add one last big FA to a 1 year deal

Highly doubtful imo. AAA depth at most.

If we grab another SP at this point, I think the emphasis may be on getting an innings eater. I compiled the remaining free agent pitchers and filtered them down to guys that over the past 3 seasons have averaged at least 5 IP per start and an xFIP under 4.50 as a starter:

2021-23 as SP:

Snell and Montgomery are likely out of our price range and Bauer and Urias are likely out for other reasons.

Domingo German may be the best option of the rest if we just want a little more depth and stabilization for the rotation. Although one last year with Greinke would be fun too :)

Clevinger would go in the inng eater category.  He’s still out there.

He didn't pass my xFIP lower than 4.50 threshhold, but he does seem to be a guy whose results outperform his xFIP (3.77 ERA with a 5.15 xFIP last year, and 4.33 ERA with a 4.76 xFIP in 2022). I wouldn't mind him in the right deal.

Here's my full list of remaining SP free agents:

Agree if they could get him for around 8 million he’d fit nicely.

No thanks on Clevinger at or near $8m.  If he signs for something around what Rea got sure then I have no problem with signing Clevinger.  At best he is a #5 pitcher and you really want to sign a #5 pitcher around $8m?

I would rather get another bullpen piece for that than spend it on someone like Clevinger.

I'd be intrigued by Syndergaard.  Is there any chance he can be the pitcher he was before the injuries?  I read his fastball is coming around..

If cheap, he has the opportunity for lightning in a bottle...

Maybe if he would be willing to be a reliever but otherwise no.  All of his pitches have been bad.  Though he did start throwing a cutter recently.  Rumor is that he won’t accept being a reliever.

What can Chapman possibly be asking for?? Great glove but I don’t think offensively he moves the needle.

That's pretty much been the Brewers wheelhouse. Maybe the Hopkins and Sanchez signing means they've moved past these kinds of players.

His glove isn't what it used to be.

Someone is going to make a big mistake with him.  Hopefully the Cubs.

I thought we would be done after the Sanchez signing. However, the last two signings (Rosario and Urshela) make me think the team will sign another guy at a low cost. I have shifted my hopes from Soler to Belt. I do not want to see a lot of Bauers this year if it can be helped.

Honestly. Every time someone brings up Bauers, it just makes me more and more irritated that they traded for him. Just a waste of a roster spot. Perfectly fine as a minor league FA, or non-roster invitee, but a non-optional 40-man spot?? Just dumb.

Could easily be wrong but I am hoping he is like Haase in that if you can't find a better alternative, you have him as a "break glass in case of emergency" guy.

Oh, I agree. I think he was procured as a hedge against not signing a better first baseman, but I think most of us would rather roll with a Tyler Black/Wes Clarke platoon at 1st than have Bauers enter the season as our primary first baseman anyway.

Any thoughts, pro or con, on an Eric Lauer reunion?

Con: got crushed last year. His 6.56 ERA  was actually kinda shiny compared to his 7.49 xERA and 7.41 FIP.

Con: Among 410 pitchers with at least 40 IP last year, his 3.09 HR9 ranked 410th.

Con: His pitch characteristics were already marginal when he was having success (Stuff+ of 94 on his fastball and 102 on his slider in 2021-22) but they regressed big time in 2023 to 79 on the fastball and 89 on the slider.

I think we have a pretty interesting mix of guys in camp at this point, but if we were to sign anyone else I would want either a starting pitcher that can eat some innings (as outlined previously), a position player that is a clear upgrade over our current options (ie. Chapman at 3rd or Martinez or Belt at DH) or a player that can play multiple positions (ie. Solano).

After sorting through the remaining free agents, that left me with the following four players:

image.png.b4cb105cd7d6fb8d8101afae61b904ab.png

Not sure why all the projection systems have Martinez with a wRC+ in the 106-112 range, He's had wRC+'s of 126, 119, and 135 the past three seasons and would definitely be a nice presence in the lineup vs both righties and lefties.

Belt would pair well as the left handed side of a DH platoon (w/ Sanchez/Contreras filling C/DH against lefties).

Chapman's the best all around position player left and I would definitely take him if he came in on a prove it deal, but he would also be cemented at 3rd which would limit some of the young bats from finding some playing time.

Solano would be a solid bat in the lineup and his defensive flexibility would be nice as the season goes on as he could help wherever he's needed as younger players succeed or struggle at different positions.
