Both Hoskins and Bauers are -0.2 WAR.

do we just hope for better things in the second half?

Hoskins had a 129 wRC+ before getting injured.

Guessing they'll give him plenty of chances to regain that form down the stretch, especially since they are likely on the hook for him next year too at this point.

Small sample, but he was starting to put it together before the break with 3 home runs and a 141 wRC+ over 29 PA since July 5th.

Bauers hasn't been anything special either, but he is the best defensive 1B on the roster and has been the club's primary pinch hitter with 18 PAs of 273/556/455 which makes him the 5th best PHer in MLB with at least 10 PAs this year.

Would imagine they would just roll with Black (assuming he isn't traded himself) before trading for someone at the deadline.

Yeah ride or die with Hoskins at this point. If they bench him I think it will be in the playoffs or maybe a few weeks prior. The only crazy move they could make there is to salary dump Hoskins in a trade and also bring in a Carlos Santana type of guy, but I’ll give that less than 1% odds.

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.

Yea really there isn't another choice, plus he has been coming along lately so hopefully gets back to his old form by end of year.  Sure, he's basically providing what we could've got for half or less of the money (another example of big FA spending not working well) but its not like they have or would be able to get anyone noticeably better.  Then throw in roster issues as its not like they're gonna cut him and eat 30 mil.   Basically, if we were paying him Tellez money you'd be like 'welp he's holding his own at league avg world'.  Its just we're overpaying for it so it sticks out more. Its not like he's hitting at Winker last year levels where you just cannot play him anymore.

Sure if you got lucky your mid level FA like a Canha/Santana last year could do better but its more likely people like that give the same league avg level he's been giving

No way Canha/Santana/Telez would do much more the 10 points better in avg. than Hoskins.  IMHO there all kind of below average right now.

Hoskins started out great until he slid into second way back early in the season and kind of re injured his knee. But I do expect Hoskins to step it up a little in the 2nd half.

I didn't mean them specifically.  I meant similar guys who'd be available now.  Basically, an elite clear clear upgrade like Ohtani isn't available so the replacement acquisition for Hoskins would be a blah guy in that same league avg area as those guys were for us last year.  If you get lucky you get a hot streak at the right time but chances are they're the same area if not worse as what we're getting from Hoskins already, so why bother with it.

I also think having veteran presence on the team helps, just like Molina and Pujols did with the Cards at the end of there careers.

Please do explain.

I think the Brewers biggest need on offense is a left handed power hitter who can be put in the fifth spot between Adames and Hoskins against RHP. Having Frelick in that spot, as the Brewers often have, is far from ideal.

I am hoping that Mitchell can stay healthy and show that he can fill that spot.

I also think it's important for the Brewers to avoid having someone who only has value as a DH, because they need that spot to take some of the wear and tear off of Yelich, Contreras, and Hoskins while keeping their bats in the lineup as often as possible.

The offense since June 2, when they completed the 5-1 homestand against the Chicago teams,  has been pretty stagnant. They have averaged just 4,26 runs per game, which is 12th in the NL during that period. The Brewers were second in MLB with 5.15 runs per game on June 2, but they have now fallen to 8th at 4.80 RPG.

Fortunately, the Brewers run prevention unit has remained solid, allowing the team to go 19-19 since June 2 despite the offense's problems. Hopefully the break will help the hitters return to the production they had in the first two months of the season.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I agree with that spot being a lefty, but I kind of like having different styles of hitters throughout a lineup. I don't like having 3 consecutive strikeout-prone hitters in a row, for example.

It doesn't need to be Frelick, but I do like a guy there that's gunna lean on the pitcher, go into deep counts, foul pitches off, and put the ball in play.

Veterans are looked up to by the young guys and are usually the leaders in the clubhouse. They have seen most everything and bring a presence to the clubhouse that keep the order threw the good times and bad, through the weekly grind of a MLB season which is 42 games longer than the minors. In other words they have been around the block and can raise the bar for the younger players and answer there questions.

And if your specifically asking about Molina and Pujols they are 2 hall of famers who have played in 41 MLB seasons combined and 21 Allstar game appearances combined. Trust me the young guys looked up to them.

By power hitter I don’t mean someone who is HR or nothing. But I would want someone who, unlike Frelick, is at least a realistic threat to hit a HR and would hit 10-15 or more a year with regular playing time.
