I think the value of coaches is overrated, and there isn't a doubt in my mind that Hook could have been adequately replaced had he left. But this move feels good. It feels like one of those moments that signal that people want to be part of this organization. That makes me happy.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

As a side note, McCalvy said in his article about the extension that they are not expecting to be able to retain Berry.

I saw that too.  It made me wonder what the going rate is for a first base coach, how much Berry figures to earn next year vs what the Brewers are prepared to offer.  Berry seems like a guy you'd want to try and keep but I realize there's only so much money that can be dedicated to a first base coach.  Or perhaps Berry has his eye on moving on towards a bench coach type of position somewhere, who knows.

That’s an interesting move by the Cubs to outbid the Brewers for him and then move him to 3rd base …..where most of his in game base running expertise is basically eliminated……..obviously most of his value is what he brings to the table in the spring and during the season……but you saw him coaching guys up at first base all the time helping them get reads……..3rd base coach is probably considered a promotion for him but I’m not sure it’s the best use of his talent.

Either way it will be interesting to watch……..and it will be interesting to see who the Brewers hire/ promote to take his place.

very good point. I'd look at Spencer Allen or Matt Erickson to get the 1st base gig, knowing that the tendency is to promote from within rather than go outside with the staff.

On a sidenote, I like how Sammon is still reporting and being credited on NYT/Athletic stories regarding the Brewers sphere despite having been in New York for two years and change now.

I quit my sub to them after we went the rest of 2022 without a beat writer, but I’m assuming their Milwaukee coverage hasn’t gotten any better since.

Thank you so much for the reminder!  I'd cancelled them once after my scrip ran out and Sammon was gone, they enticed me back with a large discount.  That thing was about to annual renew in 5 days before I killed it just now.

Back to the topic at hand.  Cubs' mode of thinking is "If you can't beat 'em, hire 'em"
