Not going to pretend to understand it completely either but if the purpose of the rule is to prevent an intentional drop that's pretty clearly not what was happening.

Yes.  The approaches were a little passive once they had traffic on the bases.  Some hittable pitches went by, which contributed to the soft contact.

Assuming the announcers are right, they wait to see if anyone has a play on it before calling it. If that's the case then they got it right since nobody was near it. Leaving 2nd uncovered was rough
