No anything that is close and a 3-2 count and it is late in the game should be an auto challenge.  There is very little downside in doing so.

??? No room for any nuance huh?? I’m gonna go ahead and disagree with that blanket statement. Maybe usually that is the right move. Very few situations for one move is ALWAYS the right move.

Hopefully this abs will weed out the really bad umpires but in the long run it’s not good for the game to embarrass them daily especially on balls and strikes that might be centimeters.    In my opinion.

Yes … my original post stated: He needs a few weeks minimum in Nashville to get his hitting in shape

If chourio and Vaughn were healthy, thats where he'd be

What nuance would there be?  If it is late in the game 2-outs and a 3-2 count what nuance would there be that would impact the decision?

If the pitch is a close pitch you challenge.  How the batter is feeling or if they ate something bad the inning prior has no bearing on the decision.

Opted to watch the USMNT tonight and was frustrated enough after that to check the Brewers score, see they were down 2-0, and go out for some night sky photography instead of watching the Brewers come back and beat the Rays.

Did I mention that clouds rolled in about 10 minutes after I got to dark skies and set my  camera?  All my choices were bad.  🤣

Go Brewers!

A win! Nice turnaround!

CB disasterclass incoming. Should be fun.

Maybe it will result in Murphy and Cash laughing together across the diamond about how bad CB is like they did tonight.

A very very Brewers rally. A walk. Then Bauers pops up, but runs the count to 3-0 in the process. A few hitters later, another walk, flipping the order. Then the Turang AB. Finally breaking thru McClanahan, who was more impressive than a guy making his first start in forever should expect. He was really good thru 4.

All things considered, I guess I'm in favor of challenges. Maybe Bucknor thought the object for the batter/runner to be safe is to AVOID the base. Good Lord..........

The more abs comes into play the more the scouting report will include ump info. They will definitely be more challenging with certain umps.

It's already a thing re HP umpires. But you're on to something; it will probably increase as a scouting factor.

Meanwhile I just saw Petr Crow Armstrong try to bunt and 0-2 count and foul out in the 9th inning down 2…..

I enjoyed the announcers trying to justify it as well.

I don’t know…..the times he has gotten into a rhythm he hasn’t been THIS bad. He walks a little, and has some pop. When he’s struggling like this he’s unplayable.

They need to find out about Mitchell, one way or the other. The idea of him getting ABs in AAA is a sound one, but only five games in it isn't going to happen just yet. He probably has until Chourio is ready, as speculated earlier.

I do think sending him up vs a LHP w/the outcome in doubt, like yesterday, is a bad idea.

It wasn’t a bad challenge.  On a 3-2 pitch you only have to be right about 15% of the time.  Other counts you are looking at having to be successful 70-90% of the time.

So 3-2 late in the game with 2-outs is a perfectly good challenge.

Especially because they still had 2 challenges left and it's not like it was a glaringly obvious strike. Like 75% of the ball was out of the strike zone.

I was definitely expecting McClanahan to look a lot rougher than that. Really impressive stuff from him having not pitched in an MLB game since 8/2/23.

I guess we are arguing philosophy vs outcome. Mitchell was wrong, therefore, bad challenge. That was my point
