Gordon last 3 years in AAA has had ERAs of 3.94, 3.38, and this year 3.69

Ranked as high as 10th in the Astros farm system (2023-24). 16th last year. 2021 8th round pick. Has a funky delivery. Been a starter throughout his minor league career, but I'd bet they are looking at him as a reliever.

The Brewers have two different starting pitching needs 1) Innings to get through the season 2) A top end guy to take down the Dodgers.

They could get that in one person. They don't have to. They might not get that 2nd person at all and just roll with their young guys

This helps the first part. Vet guy whose arm you can abuse. Hopefully bringing him back into a competitive playoff run reinvigorates him.

Will wait on compensation going back...

This feels like lefty bullpen insurance and the cost is taking on McCullers (who might be able to give depth MLB innings this season). Gordon will likely cost a prospect flyer. Someone like a Tayden Hall and/or a Manuel Rodriguez? Spitballing. But with the Brewers shown capacity to take successful targeted Triple-A relievers to their next level, Houston likely has to get some type of mid-grade asset return.

Fine with this as a salary dump. I'm guessing the team realizes it will be a major seller's market and will have to be creative

He's terrible so it's not exciting but they will somehow get a handful of starts and below 4 ERA out of him. No one should be surprised though, this is like the prototype Brewers mid-season addition.

I like this as a buy low move if McCullers can stay healthy he can help this team.

Since they’re also getting Colton Gordon maybe the Brewers are taking on all of McCullers remaining contract $

still waiting to see what Brewers gave up. Wouldn’t shock me if it was like Brock Wilken or something

I guess it doesn't ultimately matter, but I'd hope Houston is kicking in some cash.  $6.6MM is a lot for these two guys.

As long as it doesn't prevent us from making other moves I don't care.  Not my money.

Bob Nightengale confirms at least one prospect going back to Houston, but no high level prospects

So no prospects then.  Whew.

I wonder if McCullers is a pitching lab candidate to revitalize his career? We already saw Bryse Wilson rebound in a very short sample, and Craig Yoho's been lights out in his latest stint.

Take on the McCullers salary, get Gordon as a fireman/back-end starter... for Wilken? I'll take the deal. Wilken's been bypassed by Luke Adams. Pretty much salvages value for that first-round pick, which has not panned out.

My guess is Wilken as well, upcoming rule 5 eligibility (wouldn’t get selected in that draft but still), and he is blocked at 3B for 2027 and beyond by not only Luke Adams but also Jesus Made, Jett Williams and Andrew Fischer as options

Yeah I just don't see them taking on all $6.6M even if they really like Gordon. I'm betting Houston is paying at least half and maybe more. I could see the Brewers taking responsibility for paying around $2.25M to $2.5M of the remaining deal.

Wait a sec, was Gordon the target and our cost to acquire him was by taking on and paying McCullers for the year and stashing him on our IL?

He won't be stashed on the DL, he is making rehab starts. This is not taking Jordan Montgomery to get Shelby Miller.

I think Houston really wanted to get farther under the luxury tax. This seems like a fair amount of money to take on. I hope this won't affect any other moves we may want to consider

Cotroneo claiming Brewers sent Houston nothing but cash relief but I’m not sure that’s accurate yet

it would be the brewers are paying his full remaining salary, they would still have to give up something.
