No. They were after Colton Gordon and had to take McCullers and $2 million of his salary to get Gordon. That said, good on the Brewers for cutting bait quick if they didn't think they could fix him.

I can honestly say McCullers gave the Brewers 3.2 more innings than I expected when they made the trade.

Yeah I honestly didn’t expect him to pitch at all. I expected him to stick around on rehab assignment for the full rehab length and then get DFA’d when he was activated off the IL

As previously noted, Colton Gordon is a pitcher they've had their eye on for quite awhile, and taking on McCullers and $2 million of his salary turned out to be a creative, relatively low-cost way to get him. 

Giving up Jaydn Fielder is a nothingburger.

What are the chances of McCullers taking a AAA deal from the Brewers to continue working his way back?  I heard some rumors about his returning to Houston (I'm sure he is well ingrained to the organization), but the Brewers might be the better choice to resurrect his career.

His stuff is trash.  He can’t get major league hitters out anymore.

What I saw was a total lack of control.  He walked people like crazy, but he wasn't hit hard (the few times he was in the zone).  He is basically a freebie veteran pitcher with playoff experience.  If he goes to AAA and can't get his control back, you really haven't lost anything.

I think Woodfruff shows what an veteran with diminishing stuff can do if they can place the ball where they want. The only risk is it would take a spot in AAA that a young player might have used to develop. I don't think our AAA pitching staff is 100% full of actual major league prospects.

Coleman Crow, Colton Gordon and Tyson Hardin are legit rotation prospects. There are a few OKish-type prospects in the pen, but I agree that there is certainly room for a reclamation project or two there.

He should not be taking up playing time to any of them. Nor would he. He might get a few starts over Brett Wichrowski. Even then, a few starts in august wouldn't be preventing Wichrowshi from developing into a major league pitcher.

Everyone (including me) likes to grumble about the fact the Brewers don't spend "enough" money to push us over the top, but this is the second year where we've taken on "dead" salary (McCullers and Jordan Montgomery) in order to improve our team in other ways (Gordon and Shelby Miller). 

That's at least a small indication that they value winning over saving money.  There are obvious limits to that, as anyone who has ever balanced a checkbook knows, but it's encouraging to see them "wasting" money on bad contracts in order to get improvements with desired players.

Seriously, it isn't your money, so why does it matter? $2 million isn't going to keep the Brewers from going out and making a move in the next week.
