We've had our 5 hitter all along... (New Designated Lineup Thread)

...Corey Hart.

Ned needs to get Braun back in the 3-hole, Prince cleanup, and Corey Hart is our 5 hitter. Simple as that. There's your R-L-R. Those 3 have been our best players on offense all year long. Has Ned even once had Corey in the 5 hole?

Nothing wrong with Hart batting 5th as you point out,but I like the Weeks and Hart combo at the top of the order with thier stolen base potential. What I don't like is Hardy still in the 8th spot, but that's another topic.

When Corey's in proper form, I like him in any of the top six spots. He may even be the best alternative for any of those spots that don't contain Braun or Fielder.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I liked that lineup last night, with Gross 2nd, Hart 5th. On the other hand, it may be better having Gross 5th, preserving the left-right-left configuration for 3-4-5.

Last night's lineup left me thinking Bill Hall is gone for 2008. He could be the best trading chip for Doug, and seems to be the player who could most easily be replaced from the current roster.

I'd be surprised if Hall is gone. Worse case scenario he ends up back in a super utility but almost full time role. If we get rid of Hall then we are really looking for a full time OF and a part time OF at the very least next year.

Normally, when a full lineup is posted to a thread, a mod will refer members to the Major League Forum Rules, which ask that full lineups be restricted to the lineup thread in the Designated Threads List.

However, this thread has gotten into several players, the old lineup thread has dropped way back in the discussion list, and full lineups seem relevant. I'm going to designate this as the new lineup thread and replace the old one in the list.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

the only sensible lineup in my mind http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif

I don't think I like the idea of having anyone but the pitcher bat after Estrada. Extra-base hits are worthless with him on base, but he makes good contact so (crossing fingers) hopefully he can at least advance runners before him. Heck, I think I'd just have him bunt if there's anyone on base with less than two outs...the guy is a walking DP (and i stress the word "walking").

As for Hart, I like him in the 2 spot...especially with Weeks leading off. Both have been getting on base very well lately, and with Fielder and Braun after them, it seems like the logical lineup. Hall I believe will still come around, and would be a great guy batting 5th when/if he does. I know it may be wishful thinking, but I have this image in my mind of Weeks and Hart both with .400+ OBP's followed by Braun, Fielder, and '06 Bill Hall. At that point, I don't even care who the next three batters are.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

Hardy is mashing out of the 8 hole, I know that some think that his production is wasted there, but I don't think that it is a smart idea to move him now, what's the point, it gets the bottom part of the lineup going and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't think that your best hitters always need to go at the top of the lineup, I think it makes sense to have some people that can hit down in that 8 hole. And 7th for that matter.

I absolutely hate Fielder 3 and Braun 4. I don't know why it bothers me so much but it was working really well and I didn't see any need to tinker with it. Everything about Braun screams a 3 hitter to me and everything about Fielder screams 4 hitter to me.

Braun may be one of the best hitters to come out of this era some day but right now he gets a little jumpy and has a tendency to chase pitches out of the zone in big spots. I think he does much better with Prince protecting him than vice versa. Prince has taken some pretty bad swings the last few games but he is normally a guy that'll take his walks.

I realize this is all a little nit picky and please don't point out Braun's double to me. I didn't say he never gets hits but I think he is a BETTER hitter in the 3 hole.

I tend to prioritize splitting up lefties in the heart of the order and going from there. I've also bought into some of the 'new age' statistical work that suggests that the #1, #2, #4, and #5 hitters should all be better than the #3 hitter. There's a lot of detail on that in this thread:

Can Braun hit Cleanup?

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I fully agree with splitting up lefties. Case in point: the Reds last year when they had Jr. and Dunn batting 3 and 4...at which point we would just bring in Shouse and blow through the heart of their order.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

Hart's hitting 5th tonight per JSonline Brewer blog. J.J. is back to 2 and Hall is hitting 7th.
Ugh, why does he continue to mess with things that are working. I know hall has been struggling, but Hardy has done fine since being dropped to 8th. I have no problem with batting Hart 5th though.

I know this might look really weird, but what if we just sorted by OBP?

Note: I switched Braun and Fielder to aid in R-L separation, despite Fielder out OBPing Braun by .001.

vs. RHP

1) Braun

2) Fielder

3) Weeks

4) Hart

5) Jenkins

6) Hardy

7) Hall/Gross

8) Estrada

9) Pitcher

vs. LHP

1) Braun

2) Fielder

3) Weeks

4) Hart

5) Hardy

6) Hall

7) Mench

8) Estrada

9) Pitcher

That LHP lineup would have a serious out-making problem at the bottom of the order. Both Mench and Estrada are only getting on at a .298 clip, .012 better than Yo.

I don't really mind the RHP lineup, though. Conventional wisdom would say that it would waste Braun and Fielder at the top of the order, but they are our best hitters, so they should get up more often than our not so good hitters. Also, the big boppers will only be up with no chance of baserunners once per game. After that, they've got just about the same chance as anyone else of batting with ducks on the pond

How bout this

Weeks

Hart

Braun

Fielder

Jenkins

Hall

Estrada

Hardy

I still feel we need a #5 hitter but if you move Hart ( the best option) there who hits #2? They don't really have a suitable option and IMO Jenks batting 5 is better than anyone but Hart batting 2.

I usually don't weigh in on lineup threads, but this moring has got me thinking...

Perhaps on days Gross is in the lineup -

I know much of Rickie's success has come since his move back to leadoff, so my hunch might be off. If so, ah well...
