  1. Vazquez is just an ideal target imo this offseason. His age & contract should help drive the asking price down somewhat, and his talent & production are exactly what the rotation needs. Would he really take more than an offer of McGehee+Hart?
  2. Kendall has a history of "calling a good game" -- I just didn't see or hear anything from Lopez this season that indicated he was a bad apple by any stretch. He was a quiet guy (at least in terms of the media), didn't showboat or hot-dog his way to any mistakes. I really think his 'rep' is overblown.
  3. Good observation on Lucroy's patience, bk. "He was pretty steady defensively," said another AL scout. "I wouldn't say anything about his defense was well above-average, but he was just steady and showed me some quickness. The only knock on him I thought has been his power, but he makes consistent contact. The swing is good, he'll show a little pull power-not very much-but he's mostly a doubles guy who works gap to gap." This is a very interesting review on Lucroy imho. The previous scout's comments in the article made me scratch my head a bit, since it wasn't particularly glowing of his defense... and then this one seems to align with that. What interests me is that the Brewers as an org. seem to comment quite a bit about how good Lucroy is defensively (at least 'quite a bit' in comparison with what gets said about Salome's defense). Going by these two scouts' comments, Lucroy's defense really doesn't sound like it could be *that* much better than Salome's.
  4. If you're looking for Lambics made near Madison, I'm not sure. But I'd have to guess you could find Lambics at a good liquor store, or somewhere like Woodman's.
  5. On Tiger boards, one name that came up was Mat Gamel for Jackson. I wonder if this is a more realistic estimation of the kind of arm Gamel could return. If we're talking a 1-1 value of Edwin Jackson, is it still a trade worth making? for money and quality...why not just try to resign cam for a contract similar to granderson's? That's the direction I want the Brewers to take, but I'm not hopeful that it's the one they will take. I'd much prefer keeping Cam & either stashing Gomez in AAA or dealing him.
  6. Gamel or someone with a nice trail of low minors players behind him need to be moved for an inning eating player with some upside (Chris Young type, but not him specifically). After that is done we can consentrate on the rest of the staff....and a catcher. I agree with the rest of your post, but if Gamel is traded for anything other than a young or prime-aged SP with stud ability, I think it will have been a waste.
  7. Yeah, Orlando Hudson didn't even hold the regular job in LA for the whole season. Not saying Torre was correct in playing Belliard over him, but there's no way Hudson was as valuable on D as someone that played fulltime (like Utley, say)
  8. I agree with FIB4Brew that Gomez would be an obvious guy to include in the theoretical offer. I'd love to see Melvin pursue a package of Granderson & Jackson. To me, it would just be a big upgrade over Gomez.
  9. Pettitte may well just retire, so I can't imagine that there's a plan relying on him at this point.
  10. I worry about that too, bklyn. HTR makes some good points, but let's not forget that it's pretty unlikely McGehee posts an OPS over .850 again in '10. He could easily drop off by ~ .100 points, and Escobar could conceivably post an offensive line that's not much better than J.J.'s was in '09. One reason I think retaining Gamel is big (beyond my obvious long-term considerations), is that I don't think the lineup as presently constituted will be a league-leading kind of group. Pitching is, of course, job #1, but I guess I'll state for the Nth time that (imo) dealing Gamel away for pitching will hurt us now & in the future.
  11. I mentioned in a different thread (& battlekow did in another) that now is probably the best time ever to look into Hamels. And, literally, the only thing 'wrong' with Hamels' 2009 in terms of rate stats was his BABIP. If Philly's so eager to unload him, I think Melvin needs to get it done. I'm not even sure you'd need to give up Gamel.
  12. Ack. Now why'd you have to go & say that? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The reason I think he's not going to be back is the $ comment coupled with "I assume he's going to want to play a lot of games again."
  13. The only thing I can see that was off for Hamel's career norms in 2010 was his BABIP. I'd love to see the Brewers try to capitalize on the Phillies' apparent souring on Hamels.
  14. What's laughable about stating that a premium defender at a premium defensive position, with top-10 offense at his position, is more valuable than a terrible defender at the easiest defensive position aside from 1B? Is it laughable to say that Chase Utley is more valuable than Prince Fielder? Fielder's advantage in OPS over Utley was far bigger than Bay's over Cameron last season.
  15. http://img2.travelblog.org/Photos/4572/108466/t/802524-Jump-for-Joy-0.jpg I don't think it takes too much reading between the lines to see that Melvin is saying Kendall will not be back for 2010. We're freeeeeee! One other thing I'm starting to think is that all this talk about Lucroy jumping into the starting role for the Brewers is just to inflate Lucroy's value in trade. Is it possible the front office actually views Salome better, and is downplaying him somewhat in order to trumpet the guy they want to trade?
  16. The point on Heether & Counsell is that Counsell can handle SS well, while Heether is more of an emergency option at short. I still think Counsell will be a Brewer in '10, but it's not surprising to see interest in him after the fantastic season he had in '09.
  17. To Melvin's credit, Harang seems exactly like the kind of "soft-tossing" pitcher many on this forum have berated him for pursuing/liking. I'm glad Melvin went for Gomez over Capps. I think Harang might have been a useful pickup, but not at his price tag. At least Gomez still has room to get better, and obviously Melvin & Co. believe that he will.
  18. Jeter changed his positioning this past season, playing deeper than he ever had in years past. I found this blurb on River Avenue Blues, a good Yankees blog: What stands out to me about Jeter playing deeper is that it puts more emphasis on his arm. His reliable hands & his strong, accurate arm are the two best features of Jeter the defender, so in some ways it's not surprising at all that playing deeper resulted in better fielding stats.
  19. I take it that's the Lambic that logan referenced?
  20. Just wanted to get some thoughts on http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=20793?page=2'>an idea proposed in a different thread by Louis Ely: I'm just wondering how people view this deal -- too low? too high? a good starting point? I don't stay as dialed in as others on trade offers, so I'm genuinely curious. Nolasco is a guy I'd love to see the Brewers get.
  21. I think Nady's a good role player target if he's healthy. Have you been reading rumors about the Brewers shopping Hart, Nate, or is it just your thought that Hart makes sense to flip for pitching? Nady's '09 elbow injury resulted in Tommy John surgery. I'm not sure how that works for position players, but this was his second TJ surgery (first was in '01). Iirc, for pitchers, the recovery time from TJ is ~ one year. Nady's surgery was in early July, and according to a CBS Sports note, he thinks he'll be ready to go for OD 2010.
  22. Nice work, splitter. Your interviews are always well-done. I didn't realize that a labrum tear had such a chronic nature. It's kind of confusing to me, though, that right after stating that it's something Hardy will have to deal with for some time, he says "he'll be all the way back." If J.J.'s shoulder is going to be a real continuing problem, I can better understand why the market for him is/was so barren. After all, Spivey had this to say about his own injury: "... My shoulder was never completely the same after that." I'm really hoping to see Spivey around these haunts if that's really the case. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Kemp is an incredible talent. Interesting to know that Spivey is so close with him.
  23. Haha -- I wasn't sure how to word that without it being a brain-twister. Closer to "starter next year" than "worthless" on Gamel. I was trying to talk about the value in trading McGehee v. trading Gamel, since it seems inevitable that one of the two will be dealt this offseason. Heether can handle 2B & 3B, and has demonstrated the kind of hitting results in the minors over the past 3 seasons that McGehee didn't. Now, I want to be clear that I think McGehee is a solid player. I hope this helps what I'm trying to say make sense, and keep in mind this is just imo: Heether + Gamel + [return on McGehee] > Heether + McGehee + [return on Gamel] Heether along with McGehee seems to be redundant. Heether along with Gamel seems to be more complimentary.
  24. Am I crazy for thinking that Heether could make McGehee expendable even more than McGehee theoretically makes Gamel expendable?
  25. Glad to hear you're healing up well coach... please do share the Angel photo, vol. 2 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
