  1. Especially if he gets a full season of seasoning in AAA this year, I think he can improve his hitting and hit about .290/.340/.400 in the majors, and would be real nice if he could steal at a 80% clip and swipe 30 bags a year as well To me, this is the dream scenario unless Escobar actually turns into at least a gap power hitter like Reyes. Then I'd just expect the SLG to be higher. I'm not sure if Alcides's numbers in the minors so far really display what scouts seem to expect from him, and there's no reason to rush him up. Let him get comfortable in AAA & show what he can do; Hardy is still arbitration-controlled through 2010.
  2. Take Petco out of the mix, and [Gerut] has an OPS around .912 the last season plus. From the little I've seen him play, Gerut has gone to the plate looking to drive & often elevate the ball. If Miller Park plays as much to the HR as park factors suggest, his approach should fit well for the Crew. A LH Hart really is a decent comparison imo.
  3. I do agree that luck plays a part in triples but hustling out of the box will put you in a position to take advantage of a slight bobble, tough hop, etc whereby coasting out of the box and jogging into second will almost guarantee triples will almost never occur. This is the part that you'd have to analyze to determine whether or not Hall's perceived lack of hustle is actually hurting his production. If you can do that, you might find that Hall actually has cost himself a triple or two. You might also find that he hasn't any cost himself any more or less than any other ballplayer.
  4. Hey El Caballo, what's that restaurant you like to go to, with all the goofy [stuff] on the walls?
  5. Why my deee-ya suh... it's suthun' fah 'swing' http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. So I'm to believe that Hall is on a 2 1/2 year unlucky streak and that guys with comparable or less speed are 5 & 6 times luckier? You could start by trying to actually prove what you're arguing ('Bill Hall never gets triples because he doesn't hustle'), instead of just mocking the evidence others are providing. Besides, the fact that J.J. Hardy has any triples -- since you're referencing him as a non-hustler (yes, I know someone else said that first) -- completely destroys your theory on Hall.
  7. Pertaining to trading for Lee, I worry you'd be asked to pay for 'Cliff Lee the 2008 AL Cy Young Winner', not just the very solid pitcher Cliff Lee.
  8. Maybe it was an empty plastic beer bottle... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Don't let facts get in your way?
  10. True, but the Cubs fans allowed the situation to significantly escalate. In no way does throwing a beer bottle at a car warrant assault Wouldn't throwing a beer bottle at someone... or his property while he's in it... be assault?
  11. Ack... then I have to agree with joepepsi... I tripped myself up on the "unanimously" bit. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/embarassed.gif
  12. Opps. Fixed. OPS, naivin... O-P-S
  13. Agreed with Patrick's emphasis... this is Brewerfan.net!
  14. Daron Sutton also engendrered a lot of dislike for Eckstein
  15. So because one guy had 4 different results (Prince's 5 triples to Billy's 1) in over 1,000 PA you can pin this down on hustle? That doesn't add up to me. In that time Hall has 1 triple, the big man, Prince has 5 and the slow (and in your mind non-hustling) JJ Hardy has 6. It's almost like... hustling has little to absolutely nothing to do with it.
  16. I don't recall people being this worked up about losing Anderson or McGruder or whatever fringe ML player that gets dropped by teams all the time. My beef on this has never been that we lost an amazingly talented young player. It's that we let a solid, 1st-PH off the bench LH bat with pop, walk for nothing. And then on top of that, this same player would likely have been able to fill said role for several seasons on the cheap. At least when we shipped off Gross we got an arm back our way. Cutting Nelson loose for nothing still doesn't sit well with me, but it's water under the bridge at this point.
  17. I really like your points in that post, crewcrazy. I think the beginning started a little while ago...he's probably speeding towards the end by now, especially if the rumors that part of the reason why Peavy shot down the trade is because he wouldn't be comfortable playing for Ozzie Guillen. Judging by the way Guillen's belittled his pitchers during mound visits in the past, I can't say that would surprise me. I can't even begin to fathom why anyone wouldn't want to work for someone with Guillen's management style. If I make a mistake at work, my boss berates me in public & I love it!
  18. This move almost guarantees that reserve outfielder Chris Duffy will be cut tomorrow when outfielder Jody Gerut joins the team. The Brewers acquired Gerut earlier today from San Diego for Tony Gwynn Jr. As soon as I saw we landed Gerut, I figured Duffy was on borrowed time. Gerut is basically Duffy but with pop.
  19. Just to be clear on Peavy... career road stats ERA: 3.82 K/9: 8.3 BB/9: 3.3 I'm not trying to say he's not a very good pitcher -- obviously a guy that's a career sub-4 ERA with those K/9 & BB/9 rates carries termendous value. However, I think it's important to keep in mind that the following pitcher ERA: 2.81 K/9: 9.6 BB/9: 2.6 will remain a ghost of PetCo Park, never to be seen again once Peavy moves on. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif EDIT: And, fwiw, when I hear that Peavy says he wants to play in 'middle America', while I do think of the Brewers, I also think Cards. I don't say 'Cubs', since I think it's been discussed at length in the Transactions forum that the Cubs realistically just don't have the prospects to net Peavy. Hopefully that remains true. Peavy's a southern boy (born in Mobile, AL), so maybe he'd be ok with the Rangers or even the Braves... though I think all he may have meant in saying that was that he doesn't want to play in NY or LA.
  20. But yeah, I still think the deal favors the Brewers from a value perspective. Absolutely. When I heard BA just re-announce the deal on the game broadcast, I just laughed. There were so many TGJ-to-SD proposals started here at BF's forums based soley on, 'He's Tony Gwynn's son!' that I just had sort of adjusted to a reality in which that kind of deal would never happen. Getting a decent backup for a fringe prospect works out well for the Crew. Absolutely. Gerut has very real power & should look a lot better away from PetCo. I got a chance to watch Gerut play a lot in Portland last season. This is (imo) an excellent trade for the Brewers. The mere fact that we moved TGJ to a situation that's better for him is impressive, nevermind the fact that we get back a player that instantly becomes our 4th-best OF... AND bats LH. Again, this is just my opinion, but HUGE tip of the cap to Melvin here. This trade is just great work (even though yes, I know it's a relatively small-time deal).
  21. As best I understand, the job of the #2 hitter is just like any other hitter's job -- get on base, & hit for power. Bill Hall has done both of those things extremely well in his career against LHP.
  22. Is PHing for your number 2 hitter really how you want to use up your bench late in a game When the PH option is Mat Gamel, absolutely. He can then stay in the game regardless of the handedness of subsequent RPs, since he hits LHP well too. And your right, that .300 OBP (overall) in the 2 hole since the 2006 season is innacurate. Its closer to .200. It seems you're almost taking enjoyment out of not discussing Bill Hall v. LHP, & instead discussing something else that no one else really seems to be addressing.
  23. What was Hart's MLE for the season he won Southern League MVP? Cole Gillespie is about to turn 25 & is in AAA. Hart won the Southern League MVP (AA) in his age-21 season. I'm not sure there's really anything to be proven from that comparison... but fwiw in Hart's age-25 season, his MLE, er, line, was an .892 OPS. I think it's safe to say Gillespie is not in the same class as Hart.
