  1. If you played a drinking game and had a shot/finished your drink every time Ramirez' knee was mentioned during a Brewers broadcast, you would be hammered by the 4th inning.
  2. I'm just glad that they didn't make the mistake of signing Redick. Second round picks are essentially worthless, but better than nothing. I'd rather have this than have Butler coming back.
  3. Why? How could you justify him over the 9 players ahead in WAR, specifically the 4 or 5 who are on competing teams? Look at the stats. Take him out of that lineup, and where would the D-Backs be? It seems like every time that I watch them play, Goldschmidt comes through with a big hit.
  4. I'd probably vote for Goldschmidt at this point in the NL, and I don't even see him mentioned in the article.
  5. Things are looking really bleak. I'm starting to think that it would take a huge turnaround to save Melvin/Roenicke. If I had to bet, I'd say Attanasio is going to clean house. It will be interesting to see how active the team is around the deadline. Would Attanasio sign off on non-salary dump deals if he was planning on dismissing Melvin? It may not matter anyway...Gallardo torpedoed his trade value tonight.
  6. Even though I think Bledsoe will have a difficult time living up to the hype, I would gladly do a sign/trade with the Clippers for him. Not sure why the Clippers would do this for Redick though. I'd be happy if they just let Redick walk, so getting a player with upside on a short term deal would be a bonus. That said, my guess is that anyone coming back on a sign and trade deal for Redick will be a veteran with a longer term deal.
  7. I remember the most substantiated SF offer being Sanchez for Hart, and Melvin rightfully shot it down.
  8. I don't see Gallardo as a salary dump guy. At least I hope not, this isn't the Selig-Preib era Brewers. I don't see the Dodgers as a match considering the prospects that they have to offer. Going further, why would the Brewers want to take on Billingsley's horrible contract?
  9. What a letdown. And I thought that Sophia might finally have something worthwhile to report on the situation and she starts talking about bobbleheads...
  10. I think it would be interesting to study win now/rental trades & see what the odds are that they pan out over the course of two-three months they usually cover. I'd think that it's probably a 50/50 deal. There have been some horrible trades by the win now teams (off hand Langston to the Expos, Colon to the Expos, Randy Johnson to the Astros, the Bagwell deal, etc.), but I'd guess that just as many times the prospects have done absolutely nothing while the vets helped. It seems more often than not, its a so-so mixed bag for both teams. The thing that gets me about the Rangers last year, is that they were a team that had come so close, with so many prospects to choose from, and they don't make a deal. Call me shortsighted, but I'd have been incredibly frustrated if I was a Rangers fan.
  11. Didn't you also compare Profar to Royce Clayton last year? You must really have despised him since he's your default negative comparison for every SS in the Rangers organization. I'm thinking that the comparison I made was between Jose Offerman and Profar, but you may be right. I didn't despise Clayton at all. I actually thought that he was a good veteran presence with the Brewers and had a solid glove. That said, by the time he got here, he wasn't much of a hitter. The bottom line is that I think a solid argument can be made that the Rangers reluctance to part with any prospects to add pieces last July may have hurt them. Maybe all of these guys will pan out and turn into all-stars, but the odds are against it.
  12. I can't think of one good reason to trade Gomez at this point. The only way that I would even consider it is if a young MLB proven starting pitcher was coming back- like a 1/2 starter type who is locked in for at least 2 or 3 years. Those guys don't grow on trees.
  13. I remember suggesting that the Brewers deal Greinke for Profar and we throw in K-Rod or Axford last year if the Rangers would be desperate enough to take that deal and there were about 10 posters who blasted me and thought that we would have been giving up way too much when in fact that would have been a steal I was definitely one of the 'blasters' because the proposal was started in May, when the Brewers still had some hope of getting back into contention. At the time Greinke was dealt, I would have done the deal. I wouldn't mark that deal down as a steal at this point anyway, Profar hasn't really done anything in the majors yet. I wouldn't trade Segura for Profar at this point anyway, so I'm happy the way things turned out. As for Texas not dealing with the Brewers because of Melvin's comments... if that's the case, they can go pound sand. To me, it looks like they severely overrated a bunch of their prospects. It was their prerogative to go cheap with Dempster last year, and it looks like it cost them big time. They had better hope that these young guys can step into their aging lineup and fill some holes- and that their $100 million shortstop stops playing like Royce Clayton (Brewers vintage) or their window may be closed.
  14. I don't have a clue what the deal with Perez is. I can only guess that it was due to his age and the fact that he's left-handed. I'm so glad that the Rangers were tight with their prospects last summer. The Brewers were extremely fortunate to get Segura as a plan B. As for trading them Gallardo, I just don't see a match. The only way that I would do it would be if Profar was coming back, and I don't see that. I would probably do Lohse for Grimm or Perez if both continue to flame out at the MLB level, if for no other reason than to shed Lohse's contract from the books.
  15. You know that it's been a rough year when we are in late June and Cody Ransom and Chris Dickerson have one fewer home run than Braun/Ramirez/Hart combined..... in less than half the plate appearances.
  16. Based on the early returns, most of those Texas prospects seem to have been overhyped. I certainly wouldn't trade Gallardo for a package built around Olt and/or Perez.
  17. I'd trade Axford for Porcello, but the Tigers wouldn't. That said, I don't really know why people are so high on Porcello. He's still young, but he certainly doesn't miss many bats. As for the Tigers, from what I've seen, they have a better candidate to close internally than most of the names they've been linked with. That Smyly kid has been pretty good, I don't know why they don't give him a crack at it. He doesn't blow people away, but he gets a lot of strikeouts. When he was starting last year, he always seemed to get through the lineup the first time pretty easily, but he didn't seem to have the stamina to go deep into games.
  18. I don't have a problem with trading vets for prospects if the season is lost in July. That said, I also don't want to see the Dean Taylor school of thought where you dump guys just because- trying to catch lightning in a bottle. I want quality not quantity, failed prospects need not apply... meaning I don't care where Baseball America had a guy in the organizational rankings two years ago, if he can't make contact/throw strikes now (or if he looks AAAA in a cup of coffee or two), I don't want him. I'd rather get young toolsy guys from the low minors.
  19. I really don't think that a 'textbook' follow through is going to make much of a difference here. Proper follow through is definitely helpful in fielding bunts, grounders and dribblers, but probably not the liner smoked right up the box. I really don't think that helmets are the answer either. I think that you have to look at the bats, especially at the amateur levels, bat technology has really advanced over the past 20 years or so.
  20. Am I seeing things or did the Houston manager just pick his nose and eat it on camera?
  21. What the Phillies got nothing for Pence that is news to me. The Phillies got the Giants 2nd best prospect in their farm system in Tommy Joseph a 1B/C who has a lot of power and is currently ranked as the 3rd best prospect for the Phillies this year. I look more at stats than magazine rankings, and this Joseph guy looks to be nothing special to me. Apparently, he's been brutal in AAA this year both offensively and defensively.
  22. I'm not torn up about Ellis, as he played pretty poorly last year outside of that one stretch after the all star game. It will be interesting to see what happens to him on the open market... he may get a reality check. I really hope that the Bucks don't overpay Redick now.
  23. If Gallardo continues pitching well, he'd bring back some good value, Henderson would have some as well if he picked up where he left off pre-injury. The rest of those guys, I just don't see much coming back at all. I look at what the Phillies did last year, and their haul was underwhelming to say the least (e.g. getting nothing for Pence). If the Brewers want to move a lot of these vets, it isn't going to be for much more than salary relief.
  24. I don't see how you could pitch effectively with a helmet throwing off your balance. Not to mention in the summer heat, guys would roast with that on their heads. I'd bet that the risk of heat related problems would be greater than that of getting smoked with a line drive.
  25. Yeah... I would bet that any deal with Washington involving Ersan and the 3 would require the 15 going out and some overpaid stiff coming back. In that case, I pass.
